OK here's my latest attempt to take a thread off topic: Did anybody else know that Colin Kaepernick wanted to go to Stanford? He camped, but didn't get an offer. The guy is seriously smart. 37 Wonderlic. 4.0 student in college and high school.
Yet something else we have Walt Harris to thank for. Anyhow, imagine if Harbaugh had inherited Kaepernick then. If Luck waited behind him, then maybe Luck would have played this past season. Then again, maybe he would not have come to Stanford.
I know I know I know. Would have, could have, should have. I'm sorry but I love the counterfactuals. This may be related to my problems living in the present.

I think I've seen 5-6 threads on Ca.l fan sites commenting on the desire for CK to play for Tedford. Of course, then another poster follows up with "and I heard Tom Brady REALLY wanted to play for Ca.l but had to settle for Michigan because Holmoe didn't see his talent."
A more honest assessment of the situation is that only 1 FBS school had a coaching staff with the foresight to recognize CK's talent, so that's where he went. Not other Pac10 school offered, from what I've read, and neither did any other FBS school. It's hard to blame our coaches when when the consensus seemed to be that he could not play at the FBS level.
Sure, it would have been nice to have him instead of Tavita. But then, maybe we wouldn't have replaced WH for Harbaugh and therefore not gotten to 3 consecutive BCS bowls.

pretty interesting relook at Kaepernick. he had a D-1 offer from Nevada -- that's it. in the combine before his SR year, Kaepernick ran a 4.9 40 and a 4.5 shuttle (neither very nifty). he also ran a wing T offense in HS and he put up modest numbers since he was limited to dozen throws or so per game. lastly, Kaepernick had a poor throwing motion then. Ault, his coach at Nevada, revamped his throwing motion to one more over the top (the drill was to throw the ball over the goal posts).Â
for those that care, Alex Loukas was our 2006 QB recruit. Greg McElroy was one of the ones we went after early that year.

I remember reading somewhere that even Nevada slow-played Kaepernick before making him an offer. As already pointed out by others, there were lots of question marks about him.
Here are my two thoughts on this:
1. Had his RS year been under Wlat, would Kaepernick ever have progressed the way he needed to? My gut feel is that it's best we didn't find out.
2. Even at the height of the Buddy/Wlat era, I'm glad we didn't have to reach that far down the recruit list. This is not in any way meant to disrespect Kaepernick -- just a statement about the status of our program even in its darkest days.

The recruiting sites don't list Kal as a school of interest to him then. I'm sure if Stanford offered, he would have accepted. Yes only Nevada had the foresight to recruit him. Then again, from their perspective it may have been a no-brainer. Stanford needed to be in the business of identifying underrated/recruited players and this was a giant miss.
He red-shirted freshman year at Nevada so I don't think he would have saved Walt's job.

I don't think Stanford was -- or could have been -- in the mix.

Who knows
without Tavita, maybe we don't pull off The Greatest Upset in 2007.
I'm pretty happy with the way things have worked out don't see the need for "what might have been."

This is off the topic, but I'll bet Alex Loukas could have done pretty well playing in Ault's pistol offense at Nevada.

I'm pretty sure Kaepernick could have pulled that off.
Sorry Kathy, my ever increasing unreasonable expectations as a fan has now reached into the past.

Scout and Rivals lists Stanford as a school of interest for him. Scout says he camped with Stanford. He didn't get an offer. Given Kaepernick's intelligence, Walt can't blame Old Union for this one.

Scout lists his SAT at 1650.
According to this website, that translates to 1090-1120 in the old system. If that's a reliable conversion chart, then I think he would have been borderline.

Kaepernick's gpa (4.0) and SAT (1170 on the old SAT score; 1650 under new) scores were above Loukas' reported gpa and SAT score. I don't think Kaepernick would have been a borderline admit at all. he was above the 2006 admitted football recruit's gpa average and below it in SAT score.Â
iirc the 2006 class was the first admissions class after the end of Robin's Reign of Terror.

The "Kaepernick to Stanford" counterfactual is fun, but I don't think there was much chance of it happening, and it's really hard to say how it would've worked. Kap put up great numbers at Nevada, but would he have without Ault's training/system? Hard to say.
As for the original topic of this thread, it's great that Luck's starting the Pro Bowl. Has a rookie QB ever done that before?

Ummm...RGIII was actually selected for the game weeks ago, though he will not play. Wilson, like Luck, was added as a replacement.
So actually all three super rookies can claim Pro-Bowl status. 3 rookie QBs THAT might be a first.
Re: Luck is a Pro-Bowler - pincemob - 01-22-2013
So RG3 was "elected" while Luck was "selected". Sounds all too familiar. Good thing we don't vote on important things in this country.
I heard Tim Brown on morning radio talking up Andrew Luck as the "future of the NFL", and saying he definitely is the best rookie QB. It was in the context of discussing the Ravens' Super Bowl run (and having to go through the trio of Luck, Manning, Brady).  He then went on to say at the end that Bill Callahan might have tanked the 2002 Super Bowl because of his friendship with Gruden. Which comments were featured on ESPN today? You guessed it.Â

Andy Dalton and Cam Newton played in the Pro Bowl last year but they didn't start. Funny story about Cam Newton: press reports that the AFC's pass rush startled the NFC offensive line. Apparently the Laptop Thief acted like such an ass that they wanted to sack him.

Man that is incredible that CK ran a 4.9 40 in HS. Is that true? I ran a faster time than that, and I bet I still could.
After watching him pulling away from NFL DBs, it's impossible that is still the case, but most people generally don't get a whole lot faster after high school.

Has it been verified that Luck is starting? Wouldn't Peyton Manning start?

He ran a 4.5 in his combine workout, so I'm guessing he either had a bad day or the time was just wrong.
