I think Muir is in over his head.

Thought about this too. I don't really understand the move.
The current talent rich team probably would love a change. A new coach would likely love the talent and the ability to recruit the class to replace those guys. Would anyone associated with Stanford have been outraged if Muir fired Dawkins? I am sure someone somewhere wants Dawkins to stay, but would they not at least accept Muir's desire to try something different?
Keeping Dawkins is loaded with downsides. Dawkins will bolt if he ever finds a way to win. A large portion of the season ticket holders will bolt now knowing they can donate their way back to good seats when Dawkins is fired. Recruits will be told that Dawkins' time is limited.
Maybe Muir is trying to replicate the football team's turnaround. First the team needs to go 1-31 or so before the true turnaround can commence. Then a few years later Stanford will win the Pac-12 and make it to the Final Four. So the only way to get to those depths is to keep Dawkins as the coach.

Yeah, probably so.

Everyone gets a mistake or two. This is Muir's, I guess. I think skepticism is warranted henceforth.

Come on...we're talking about the guy's job security already? Seriously? Kinda preposterous.
Muir did set him up for a difficult next couple of years with the MBB program, potentially. With all the returning veterans, and if they take a step forward, this SHOULD be a very good team that can at least make the NCAA tournament. But, the next year, a brobdingnagian number will graduate, and then what? Well, the team made the tourney, so Dawkins gets at least one more year, which may be a pretty bad one (drawing from the past time here). I guess then you only have to eat one year of his contract, if that's the case.Â
I disagree with Muir's decision, but no way this single decision, even regarding a major sport, puts his job in danger. Now if he makes a series of bad hiring decisions, including an eventual replacement for Dawkins, that's a different story

Sure is a lot of watching going on this morning on the cardboard. I'm not sure I can watch all these things simultaneously.
As for Muir, I doubt this will meaningfully impact the length of his tenure here.

The move won't in and of itself lose him his job, but it is an indicator that he's going to be a caretaker AD, rather than one who will proactively take moves to improve the programs. It's a Ted hires Teevens kind of move.

MBB is the weakest department at STANFORD, athletic or academic. Given Muir's background, Etchemendy and Hennessy must have hired him to fix MBB. The only plausible explanation for keeping Dawkins is that there isn't money to fire him. Or they can't identify the ideal replacement yet. Maybe they are thinking the former alumnus David Shaw formula. Nick Robinson is a logical candidate, but he hasn't proven himself at Southern Utah yet.
Here's a crazy idea: let Mad Dog take the reins without paying him a head coach's salary and sideline Dawkins for a couple seasons. Madsen certainly can't do much worse, and my guess is that he saved much of his NBA money.

I know that we are all disappointed in the results from the men's bball team on the court, but JD's players are getting it done in the classroom. Per the Graduation Success Rates from the NCAA's 2012 graduation rate report, Stanford is #1 in the Pac 12 at 91%.  If you change the metric to the federal graduation analysis (which does not remove transfers from the denominator), Stanford is still at 90% and ranks #1 in the country among major programs.

This is a necessary condition for keeping a coaching job at Stanford. It is not a sufficient condition.

I remember when Wlat was fired, there was discussion of whether or not to give him one more year. A bite-the-bullet decision was then made to fire Wlat after his second year, rather than drag things out. We all know how that turned out, and had we waited another year, we wouldn't be where we are today.
The only reason I can think of keeping Dawkins is that he is a decent recruiter. He seems to be able to convince players to come here.

All this underachievement can only make his recruiting worse.

As the Not In Tournament champion, MBB ranked no higher than 69th in the country last year. Name a STANFORD academic or athletic department ranked that low.

Wrestling hasn't exactly been lighting the place on fire. I haven't seen a national ranking but 6-16 can't be ranked very high.

Wrestling has struggled since Kerry McCoy left. On the other hand, McCoy isn't exactly lighting the world on fire at Maryland, either.

Men's rowing is not doing so hot right now, but I have high hopes that will change with the new frosh coach this year.

Are there even 60 division 1 wrestling programs left? If we are lower than 69th, that would be really bad.

For the next MBB coach, Muir needs to specify not making the Tournament when Harvard does is cause for firing.
