Update on Director's Cup -
FarmBoy - 05-31-2013
Gostanford has an article:
http://www.gostanford.com/genrel/053113aaa.html
They're projecting a razor thin margin of error:
Quote:Based on Koberleins unofficial projections, if the seeds hold true in the remaining spring sports, the Cardinal will win by about five points. However, Florida still has postseason teams playing in softball, baseball, and track and field, and the Gator mens team ranks No. 1 in the latter. Stanford has two teams still competing the 10th-ranked womens crew team, and mens and womens track and field.
Looks like we need to hold out hope Florida doesn't go all "Stanford Women's Tennis" on us and outperform its seeds.

Some good news for Stanford's chances is that Florida softball lost their first game as the #2 seed, 9-2 to #7 Tennessee. They play Nebraska in a losers' bracket game tomorrow.

Actually watched women's softball and cheered for the Vols, and now will cheer for the huskers on Saturday. The difference between 7th and their 2nd seed could be really helpful.
However, this really should come down to the NCAA Track Meet. If Florida's women run well that will be tough. I expect the Florida Men to win since they have had a great season and are ranked #1. Stanford needs a few male runners to get all-american level finishes to boost Stanford out of the 30s and 40s and into the teens.
It should be a fun June at least. I am sure the NACDA is pleased. Though I wonder how many people that follow Gator athletics even know that they have a very good chance to win this year's crystal cup thingy.

Go 'huskers!
(Never thought I'd say
that)
May the best loser win ...

It would be interesting to hear how the Florida boosters and fans are reacting.
I remember reading an article a few years back that stated that increasingly, AD bonuses are being tied in part to Cup placement. I seem to recall Florida being one of the schools in that situation and it cited the funding the school has put in smaller Olympic sports recently as evidence of the change in priorities. It could be another SEC school I was thinking of, though.

Here's the most relevant post on a discussion board I could find:

We are talking about it more than they are.

Women's rowing placed all three boats in the semifinals tomorrow:
http://www.gostanford.com/sports/w-crew/recaps/053113aaa.html
Eight other schools placed three boats in the semis as well. Stanford has the outside lane in all cases, indicating a low seed. Their final score should closely track their #10 ranking. That would be worth about 35 Directors Cup points, replacing field hockey's 25 points for a net gain of 10 in the total score.
Looks like we'll be pulling for ABF (Anyone but Florida) through the end of the remaining championships.
Geaux Cardinal!

Austin Peay scored 3 in the 8th to beat Florida 4-3 in their CWS Regional. I believe the regional runner ups get credit for finishing 17th, so it will be ideal for regional 3 seed Florida to miss that Regional final game. A loss to the 2-seed on day #1 was a good start.
It looks more and more like Stanford men getting enough points in track and/or Florida women not doing well at the same meet.
Re: Update on Director's Cup - pincemob - 05-31-2013
Can someone explain the scoring?? The numbers you see on the Directors cup website appear to show total points, as though every sport which scores at all contributes to the total. The Stanford article suggests you can only score in 20 sports, 10 men and 10 women. Is that right? So what are the true standings? If you can only score in 10/10 sports, then the cumulative totals on the Directors Cup website are wrong because it for instance shows us scoring in 11 women's sports plus fencing (which has no gender). Are the actual standings (showing only schools' top 10/10 scores) posted anywhere to follow along?Â

Preliminary standings just run tally the raw totals. The NACDA only corrects to the 10/10 limit with the pre-final and final standings, which come out in June. In reality only Stanford has had a big history of scoring in more than 20 sports, so it really is just a Stanford problem. And almost certainly the issue of getting over the limit with half of the spring sports outstanding is a uniquely Stanford challenge.
Just FYI - The final standings should have that max sport issue for Florida too since they will likely have possible scores in 11 female sports.
To get to your desired 10/10 split you will need to find the best 10 female results for Stanford and add in fencing and the men's results. By my count last week I think you will find that men's track probably will offset that 11th best women's result. So Stanford's final official tally will likely be in that 1230 area. Florida, can exceed 1230 if baseball, softball and the two outdoor track teams pull in big tallies. All other schools on the list are not yet impacted by the 10/10 split so their tallies do not need adjustments.
Re: Update on Director's Cup - pincemob - 06-01-2013
So for us is fencing counted as a men's sport (towards a total of 10) or does it have to cannibalize one of our women's scores? What would happen if you scored in 10 men's and 10 women's sports and fencing? Could you score 21 times? If no can fencing supplant your lowest score, men or women?
Update-- I found the answer (partially). Fencing starts as women's then switches to men's when you hit 10 women's sports. It is not entirely clear what happens if you hit 10 men's sports also, in terms of whether it can then erase a lower men's or women's score at that point though it sounds like the office tries to maximize your points which suggests it could move back to the women's side. It doesn't sound like you can go to 21 sports though. It has to erase some sport's points at that point (assuming fencing is not your lowest scoring team).

BigEasyCard - 06-01-2013
Since NorCalCard pointed out that the women have already scored in 11 sports, Stanford's total of 1233 drops by the 25 of field hockey to a net of 1208. And contrary to my post yesterday, women's rowing probably won't affect the total either.
However, we can probably expect some points from men's golf unless the scoring structure has changed since last year. They placed 7th in one of six regional tournaments. Not sure exactly how the final placements are determined, but last year 42nd place earned about 25 points.
So, we're back at about 1233 with a lead of about 250 over Florida's May 30 total of 983.5.
Florida placed 25th in men's golf, worth about 52 points. They can score a minimum of 78 for women's softball if they finish in 5th and a maximum of 100 if they win the championship coming out of the loser's bracket. That cuts our lead down to between 120 and 98.
We still have a scoring opportunity in Men's Track and Field while the Gators have scoring opportunities in Baseball, Men's Track and Field, and Women's Track and Field.
I have never followed Gator sports so closely!
Re: Update on Director's Cup -
Farm93 - 06-01-2013
It will be close, but I would rather have Florida's situation this year.
Their #1 ranked Men's Track team should easily bring home 85 points. Baseball will bring in 25, but probably not more.
So it almost becomes a case where Stanford's T&F men need to outscore Florida's T&F women. Stanford women's track might add a touch if they improve on the Stanford Women's 10, but there is not a big upside with that aspect of the tally.
So back to the likely need for that offset...Stanford T&F men are unranked. Meanwhile UF T&F women are ranked #3. That's not good.

Good news - Florida just eliminated in men's baseball tournament, losing to Valparaiso 5-4 (stranding men on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out in the 9th inning).
Finishing 0-2, they tie for 33rd place, only generating 25 points.
Now hopefully for the Huskers to finish off their softball team tonight...

VG, you type far faster than I can. Assuming the Huskers do as we hope in softball, the magic number becomes about 95 after the 25 points just earned by Gator baseball.
Re: Update on Director's Cup -
Viking_Guy - 06-01-2013
One other positive thing - Florida is one sport shy of the cap in women's scoring - softball will score at least 73 points, but either that or track and field's (assuming they finish above 23rd) will be offset by losing points for women's cross country, where the Gators finished 23rd for 51 points.

Stanford had 3 men in the NCAA. We won't score much just hope some.Â
Re: Update on Director's Cup -

We've been very focused on Florida as our primary competitor for the Cup this year.Â
Should we be worried about anyone else? Michigan, for instance, trails us by 230 points and is guaranteed 73 minimum in softball.
