Is there a reason Peter Kalambayi is not listed on the Stanford football roster? It seems like all the other Frosh are listed.

The article by Mark Soltau about the true freshman recruits on campus says, "All 11 Stanford freshman recruits are staying in Governors Corner and are enrolled in summer school."
Didn't we sign 12?

I think Sean Barton is going on his Mormon mission, so 11 on campus sounds like the correct number.

That's odd, but he's definitely there. He's been active on Twitter talking about workouts and housing (apparently the freshmen aren't happy to be in Governor's Corner for the summer) and even posted a picture of his locker. Not sure why he wouldn't be listed on the roster. Perhaps just an oversight. ESPN.com has him on the roster as #34.
Another roster note, there's still no #12. It will be interesting to see how long they wait before giving that one out again. Last year Shaw said it was still "too hot." Keller Chryst currently wears #10 for Paly High, and Josh Rosen is #3 at St. John Bosco. Could be a while before we see another twelve, which would be fine by me.

I'm sure #12 will get retired before it cools off. They should go ahead and retire #7 to honor Elway and Gerhart.

Do schools ever retire football jersey numbers? With 85+ players on any team, you quickly run out of numbers, especially when there are restrictions on positions wearing specific numbers. You'll end up with a situation like Duke basketball where the players are wearing "ugly" numbers like '53' because of all the numbers retired. I think some sort of a ring of honor for certain numbers and names and/or reserving certain numbers for players who have proved their worth.
I personally enjoy seeing '7' on the field and daydreaming about what the kid currently wearing the number will do.

Stanford has retired #1 (Ernie Nevers) and #16 Plunkett. When a team retires a number, it doesn't mean it can't be worn again. The player just has to ask permission from the original bearer. If a player has the nerve to ask, I'm sure the original bearer will agree. They are usually doing it to honor the original bearer anyways. I think that's why Toby wore #7 for football and #24 for baseball.

Yeah, just try getting Nevers to let a player use that No. 1 jersey!

What's wrong with GovCo? Well, other than being far away from things. Probably the best dining hall on campus, though I don't know if that's true during the summer since they all get pretty abysmal in my experience.

The article from gostanford yesterday indicated that they didn't like the distance and were still getting lost on campus. There was lots of fodder for upper classmen to give the frosh a tough time:

Yeah I saw that after I posted, linked in another thread. It hadn't really occurred to me that biking back to GovCo after football training would be a little bit harder than biking back to GovCo after class.
But, really, how long does it take to get familiar with campus? After a couple weeks you should be competent, even if you don't have the whole area mentally mapped.

Just for the record, :P. they didn't wear numbers in Nevers day. 1 was assigned by the AD
Also Stanford has at least 105 players so already a number of duplications. I agree 7 should be retired with 12.

What do we think actually will happen with 12 and 7?
I think 12 is going up there with Plunk and Nevers, but not for about 10-15 years. I don't think 7 is.

12 might.
Why would 7? Elway was on bad teams, so he didn't really have many college achievements, and Toby was really known mostly in his senior year only.

Didn't Elway set the all-time Pac 12 record for career and season passing? Voldemort runner-up? First pick in the NFL draft? Plus some amazing personal performances? I know his records have since been surpassed but it's a bit overly critical to say John Elway didn't have outstanding College achievements.
As for Toby being a one-time senior wonder? Come on - he was the Voldemort runner-up for TWO years and was held down in his second year of eligibility by his recovery from a horrific knee injury. (His first year he backed up Anthony Kimble and did not start). Even so he still put up a game against San Jose State in his second year that left fans gasping with anticipation. Anticipation that Toby proved valid - personally I consider Gerhart's Junior season to be his most exciting. Perhaps this is shaded by that sudden and unexpected feeling in the stands - hope!
I can see a move to retire #7 going going either way since the Stanford bar is set so high but retirement is worthy of consideration!
Here's the relevant wiki entry for Elway since many on this board may not have seen him play.
Quote:Although Elway never led his team to a bowl game, he had an accomplished college career. In his four seasons (19791982) at Stanford, he completed 774 passes for 9,349 yards and 77 touchdowns. Stanford had a 2023 record during his tenure. Elway's 24 touchdown passes in 1982 led the nation, and he graduated with nearly every Stanford and Pacific-10 career record for passing and total offense. He won Pac-10 Player of the Year honors in 1980 and 1982, was a consensus All-American, and finished second in Voldemort Trophy balloting as a senior.[5] In 2000, Elway was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame. In 2007, Elway was ranked #15 on ESPN's Top 25 Players In College Football History list. Thomas Davids, an assistant football coach, said that Elway was the "best looking ball player he had ever seen."[citation needed] A consensus All-American at Stanford,he passed for over 200 yards in 30 of his 42 collegiate games. Elway was the nations most highly recruited prep athlete in 1984.

They should retire 96. Then all the players who are going to have to wear it each year can file into an auditorium to ask permission from all the guys who have already worn it.

Speaking of Nevers' uniform, I saw this at the Pro Football Hall of Fame last fall.

Thanks for setting me straight on Toby. I never said he was a one-time wonder, just that his senior year was the only year that was retirement worthy. However, forgetting that he was a Voldemort candidate the year before was total brain flatulence on my part. I didn't remember his being in the running. That's why Good Grief's campaign was so amazing. And you're right, I didn't see Elway play.
Put me in for keeping the number of retired numbers down, though. Perhaps, we could do something else with 7, like making it a special number that players have to earn.
