Utah game thread - 82 Card - 10-12-2013

No woofing game thread.

Re: Utah game thread - 82 Card - 10-12-2013

Utah's ability to move the ball on Stanford and keep the score even in the first quarter concerns me. Our D seems to have have trouble with a balanced attack. As the game wears on, I expect the elevation to have a greater impact on our D. We may be saved by our depth.

Re: Utah game thread - washingtonismoney - 10-12-2013

Our DBs' ball skills have been lacking and for some reason we're refusing to align with opponents' motion.

Re: Utah game thread - PrinceLightfoot - 10-12-2013

Our receivers do not have much separation. Our receivers run the route then stop....that doesn't help a scrambling QB much if he sees nothing but a blanket of coverage.

Re: Utah game thread - 82 Card - 10-12-2013

Our D looked much better on the last series. The line is getting pressure on the QB. Too bad Utah doesn't have the Huskies kicker.

Re: Utah game thread - PrinceLightfoot - 10-12-2013

Terrible gap integrity.

Re: Utah game thread - Treefence - 10-12-2013

This drive all started because Browning thought it would be a good idea to give up a 10 yard cushion on 3rd and 9 at their own 2.  Either a bad decision by him, or Mason not having a lot of faith in his pass rush... This just isn't the same defense as last year...

Re: Utah game thread - Gauss - 10-12-2013

Ugh, between penalties and Utah's balanced offense, our D is getting gashed.

It seems like the offense will have to step up. If only we had a more consistent QB...

Re: Utah game thread - washingtonismoney - 10-12-2013

Playcalling that series sucked.

Re: Utah game thread - 82 Card - 10-12-2013

I think Stanford D is losing half a step because of altitude effects. Utah is stretching our D out. This allows them to take advantage.

The 3rd down was good, but Hogan was inaccurate.

Re: Utah game thread - OutsiderFan - 10-12-2013

If you look at the rushing stats and passing stats for Stanford, they aren't bad.

The defense is ghastly awful.  That is really surprising.  My guess is the D will get it together at half and play much better in the second.

Re: Utah game thread - shinsengumi - 10-12-2013

Our second half D has been pretty bad this year. Now's as good a game as any to show up.

Ugh, the D is definitely living off last year's laurels.

Re: Utah game thread - washingtonismoney - 10-12-2013

Jordan Williamson missing was such a turning point. About to go up 17-7 with the game looking pretty well...and instead give up 14 and look totally lost on both sides of the ball. There are problems physically, in execution, in conception, and coaching. This is bad.

EDIT: Also, the defense has underachieved for most of this year. Do I detect complacency? They look slow, out-physicaled; DBs have no ball skills. It's an inexplicable regression.

Re: Utah game thread - JeffInCorvallis - 10-12-2013

Missed tackles, bad execution, stupid penalties, questionable playcalling.  If we don't have Ty Montgomery we're in a world of hurt.

Re: Utah game thread - PrinceLightfoot - 10-12-2013

Big plays are making this score:

1) 51 yard pass completion
2) Ben Gardener roughing the passer call (really bad call)
3) Ty Montgomery's kickoff TD return
4) Williamson's missed field goal

The offense needs to become more efficient. We are destroying them running between the TE and Tackles and doing very little between the tackles. Hogan needs to check down - he is pulling a Nunes but only looking for the long ball.

On defense we need to reestablish our identity of stopping the run and defending the pass. Make Wilson beat us over the top - notwithstanding that 51 yrd TD pass, we have done reasonably well in that department. The zone rushing is killing us...focus the RB always. Wilson is little to no threat on his feet.

Re: Utah game thread - JohnR34231 - 10-12-2013

Yep, after Williamson's miss we started playing as badly as I've seen in a long time.

Hopefully we'll regroup and get it together in the second half.

I thought the second half of the Washington game was a wake up call for us.

Apparently, it wasn't.

Re: Utah game thread - Farm93 - 10-12-2013

It is not inexplicable, it is college football.  This type of thing happens all of the time.

Most top 5 programs in this situation will run off a big set of points in the second half.  Stanford needs to account for a things that Utah is doing, and stay calm on O.

Re: Utah game thread - dabigv13 - 10-12-2013

Did our offenses switch jerseys? Their OL is dominating our interior line right now. Is this the effect of injuries and reduced depth?

It is extremely concerning that even in the 2nd quarter our interior DL is getting blown up.

That needs to change or we lose this game.

Re: Utah game thread - dabigv13 - 10-12-2013

Also that late hit was absolute horseshit.
