Dallas Lloyd - Hank 91 - 12-17-2013

According Andy Drukarev, Dallas Lloyd spent today's practice working out at safety. Discuss.

Re: Dallas Lloyd - washingtonismoney - 12-17-2013

Pretty intuitive:

1) After the Oregon State fumble he never got another offensive snap, suggesting a lack of trust.
2) With Chryst coming in, the QB depth chart was crowded anyway.
3) And regardless of whether Reynolds returns or not, the safety depth chart looks a bit thin.

So makes sense. Hopefully we recruit a premium 2015 QB with the open spot.

EDIT: in terms of aptitude, I remember Shaw remarking that Lloyd was the only QB to be "live" for contact during spring drills -- Lloyd insisted on it; he loved contact. Sounds like the basics of the right attitude.

Yeah, while I wasn't ever outright predicting this I don't think it's remotely surprising. I hope he's aces at safety, we could really use the help.

Is it wrong for me to post that I predicted this :P

Re: Dallas Lloyd - OutsiderFan - 12-17-2013

Reynolds is gone.  He's now projected as the #1 or #2 FS in the 2014 NFL draft.  There frankly is no reason for him to return if he is on track to graduate.

So given Lloyd has taken reps at Safety, the question is, how did he do and how does he project there?  He seems to have the speed and athleticism needed, but whether he has the instincts is an unknown probably even to Mason.

Not only did I find no video of Lloyd playing playing defense, I haven't seen anything on Lloyd suggesting he ever played defense in high school period.  Does anyone know if he did?

I believe John Lynch, Tommy Knecht, and Tim Smith were all QBs that made a successful conversion to Safety at Stanford.  I have to think Lloyd is a better pure athlete than any of those guys.  At 6'3" and 215, he's got ideal size for a FS.

Still, even of Lloyd does move to FS, it doesn't mean he will start there in 2014, and even of he does, there still has to be another guy to be the backup.  Is Brandon Simmons going to be expected to step in and play right away?

That's interesting, according to what service? That seems high based on what I've heard about him, but haven't seen any rankings lately.

Re: Dallas Lloyd - Langdude - 12-17-2013

I remember Tommy Knecht at safety. Let's just say that speed was not one of his strongest attributes. But he followed in Seyon Albert's footsteps by rocking the neck roll in the defensive backfield. That pretty much tells you what we expected out of our safeties.

Tom Knecht is a poly sci professor now, by the way.

Re: Dallas Lloyd - needle - 12-18-2013

Does anybody know if Ra'chard Pippens is still at corner? He would seem to be another candidate to move to safety, though with Browning and Carrington leaving it also makes sense to have him and Harris as corner depth (competing for that Amanam role as well).

Amanam has really been an unsung part of this defense. Whoever fills that role will have very active shoes to fill.

Re: Dallas Lloyd - socalstanfan1 - 12-18-2013

I think this is a great move. And I think there are lots of reasons to be optimistic for Lloyd's successful transition: quarterbacks are trained leaders and usually well versed in figuring out passing games, two qualities absolutely necessary for safeties. As has already been mentioned, he's athletic and big enough to play the position, and I'm pleased that he has not opted to transfer to try to find a starting job as a QB elsewhere. Hopefully, that's a sign that he's fully invested in this move.  I think it's a great move, nod the two extra weeks of Rose Bowl practice can only, help give him a running start in the transition when he hits Spring Football.  Who knows if he will contribute right away? But I think he has a good chance to be a contributor, at least, down the line.

Regarding Ed Reynolds: if he opts to go to the NFL, I'll follow his career closely and wish him all the best. But something tells me his reputation right now is a bit inflated by his stellar year last year, with all the INT returns. The national media (likely the same ones who repeated, ad nauseum, that Hogan was not athletic) may have inflated his draft prospects accordingly. I wonder if the lofty ratings will survive NFL scrutiny. It might not be a bad idea to come back for a year and hone his skills a bit further.

Agree on all points.

Even the CBSSportsline story on their AA team says Reynolds is living off the glory of his 2012 season a bit, but also suggests his numbers are down because teams have stayed away from him.  This is plausible given how few deep passes Stanford gave up this season, but aside from the Oregon State PBU to save the game, I can't recall many big plays Reynolds made this season.  Richards made many more.

As for honing his skills with another year playing college football, there's another way to look at this which is really the prism through which all early departures should be judged.  Is Reynolds going to have a higher draft stock in 2015?  Right now he's considered the  #1 FS in 2015 by many analysts, but he's pretty much even with Clinton-Dix from Alabama for the 2014 draft now too.  Given he can't appreciably raise his stock next year, and considering the fact he's already had a significant knee injury, he'd be kind of foolish to come back for another year that would provide far more downside risk than upside potential.  He's going to run as fast and jump as high in 2014 combine workouts as 2015 ones.  If he is going to fall in the draft because of those, he'll fall in 2015 too, so might as well get another year of an NFL paycheck by leaving now.  It's the same situation with Yankey.  How can he possibly be rated higher in 2015, and what does he gain with another year of college football, other than risk of injury?

Only reason to stay is to finish up school, but as RS Juniors it seems pretty likely both Reynolds and Yankey are going to graduate in Spring, or only be a few units short.

I agree that Reynolds might as well jump to the NFL, if he remains the #1 safety, or even in the top couple of safeties, as he goes through the evaluation process. But if his reputation in the national media is a bit inflated, then the important question is what the NFL scouts say. If Reynolds starts hearing there are areas of his game he can improve on to raise his stock, then it would be worthwhile to stay. But if they say he is as good as the media says (or even close), or if they say he would not benefit from an extra year, then I'm sure he's got to take the opportunity.

Perhaps he believes there exists a reasonable hope for a National Championship?

Re: Dallas Lloyd - OutsiderFan - 12-18-2013

Reynolds was announced as a Senior on Senior Day, with one year of eligibility remaining.  That says it all about how he values a national championship compared to an NFL paycheck.

Will be interesting to see what the NFL personnel evaluation of Reynolds concludes.  Jan. 15 is the deadline for early NFL declarations.

I'm guessing that you're referring to Scott Frost's transferring to Nebraska. He transferred in part because he wanted to be a quarterback, but I think the hometown issue played a part there. The fact that Lloyd came here after his mission tells me he really wants to be at Stanford.

Does this actually mean anything? I thought a number of people walked last year who ended up staying. I could be wrong though.

By all accounts I've heard, Reynolds is gone.

Pippens is at cornerback, but he says he will play wherever the coaches want him.
