Early entries into the NFL draft - BostonCard - 01-03-2014

Our guys haven't announced yet, but we can expect Yankey and possibly Reynolds to be gone.

Aside from Cal's departures, which have been documented well here, here's a list of early entrants:
USC: Marqise Lee, Dion Bailey, Marcus Martin, George Uko, Xavier Grimble; given their scholarship limits, this will hurt in the short term
Oregon State: Brandin Cooks
Oregon: Colt Lyerla, Terrence Mitchell, D'Anthony Thomas
Washington: Austin Seffarian-Jenkins, Bishop Shankey (along with Price, who exhausts eligibility, so Petersen will have a challenge starting out)
Notre Dame: Louis Nix III, Stephan Tuott, Troy Niklas
Colorado: Paul Richardson (lot's of wide receivers leaving, so Montgomery has a chance to shine next year)
Cal: Khairi Fortt, Kameron Jackson, Richard Rogers
Utah: Jake Murphy
UCLA: Xavier Su'a Filo [Brett Hundley is staying]

Also, Oregon cornerback Terrence Mitchell.  If Ifo Ekpre-Olomu also leaves that would be a big loss to the Oregon secondary.

I think Yankey is gone but the rest are staying if they know what's good for them.  Reynolds has not been as good a center fielder this year as he was last year, nor has he been as good a run-stopper.  Those are the top two jobs of an NFL safety, and I don't think he's shown that he's ready.  I actually think Richards is the more NFL ready of the two.

UCLA OG, Xavier Su'a-Filo, who won the best offensive lineman award in the conference is foregoing his senior year and entering the NFL draft.

Reynolds improved his runstopping leaps and bounds over last year, he certainly did not have as big of an impact in the passing game but I think that could be due to opportunity more than anything else. Richards had the better, more consistent career but Reynolds the upside that the NFL looks for.

I think if Reynolds leaves there is a brobdingnagian opportunity for one of the freshman safeties to play right away.

I think what happened to Chase Thomas have an affect on the decisions of some of our players.  It was pretty shocking when he didn't get drafted.  He was the leader of our defense and an All Pac-12 player.

What effect will it have? I'm not sure what lesson people are supposed to draw from that.

Perhaps the better example was Thomas Keiser, who declared for the NFL after his junior year, when many people thought he would be better off staying put a year [to be fair to him, he wasn't a perfect fit when we switched to a 3-4 defense].  He went undrafted, but then was signed as an undrafted free agent, and has stuck around the league; I think he's on the Chargers roster now.

Re: Early entries into the NFL draft - dabigv13 - 01-04-2014

I guess the lesson is to leave early then? Keiser came out earlier than people thought, and he's still an NFL player anyway. Chase Thomas was at Stanford for 5 years, was a dominant player and still isn't on an active roster.
