2015 Music Thread -
stupac2 - 01-26-2015
I've liked these threads in the past, so why not do another one?
The Decemberists released a new album recently, I'm enjoying this song immensely:

I just wish it were longer, only 1:45!

One of my favorite songs from 2014, just because:

While the Kanye West/Paul McCartney collaborations have yielded one good song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INx3yUCOB3c
And one OK song (the Rihanna/Kanye/McCartney "FourFive Seconds") I'm still very, very intrigued by the reported album with West and McCartney collaborating, not least because it reportedly includes a song titled "Piss On Your Grave."* Who hasn't wanted to hear Sir Paul McCartney on a song about pissing and graves, I ask you?
* (Some reports believe it is "Piss on My Grave." Either way, really. Either way.)

Thanks
WIM Stupac for starting the thread. I was just thinking of it, and was going to ask Hulk to start one. I'd also like to echo the Decemberists nomination. Here are a few of my own...
I really enjoyed the song that accompanied the Maryland highlights video.Â
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tA8AfQaUnXM
Ghost, by Ella Henderson (of course the video featuring the Foster Farms highlights was better).
Also, I came to it a bit late, but I also like Do I Wanna Know by Arctic Monkeys.

Another 2013 song that I only just came across: Over It by The Chrystal Method
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9MpeKm-imE
And finally, for a change of pace...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmEIemQfk34
Wasted, by Tiësto.

EDIT: Oops. I think WIM had been the last person to contribute before I posted, so that name stuck. Sorry Stupac.

If we're going to allow 2014 music in here, then I'll add this one:

I saw this band live before they'd even released an album, thanks to a buddy who went to GW with them. Ever since then I've been following them, they have these weird themes of apocalypse in their first few albums, but I think it works. The most recent one is more standard pop-type fare.

Thanks, fixed!
Also, iTunes has
Make You Better, one of the tracks from the new Decemberists album, free.

Who is this Paul McCartney that Kanye discovered?!?! Props to Kanye for giving unknown artists a chance. :P
My favorite song for 2014 was
Shake It Off. Miss Swift doesn't need more promotion.
I second WIM's recommendation for WoD, and not just that track. My favorite album of 2014. My 2nd favorite album from 2014 was
Singles by Future Islands. Here's their inspired performance on Letterman. An anthem/call to action for this post-irony/new sincerity era.

Was thinking about starting this about a week ago, great to see the younger members showing the initiative we veterans sometimes lack.
Agreed re that great Letterman performance; a favorite. Second the motion on Taylor Swift, although I suspect that, like Lana Del Rey, the team here gets a lot of credit. Both of those families have paid to get the best talent on their daughter's teams.
I look forward to clicking over to Spotify to check the new recommedations. Thanks to all.

As last time, I created a playlist and will update as suggestions are added.

Note, Taylor Swift is not on Spotify...

This is not a joke, but Mariachi El Bronx is a side project of the hardcore punk band, The Bronx. You have to drink the punch to believe it! This is from their last album.

Hey that's really cool. I like it. The best mariachi mashup since Evolution Control Committee's take on Public Enemy's Rebel Without a Pause - if not, of course, Cash's Ring of Fire.

I've been wondering about that. She comes across in the media as too happy and sane to make great art.

As with many pop singers today, and a several music buffs here know, much of Swift's music comes from Sweden. That country seems to be to pop music what France was to Impressionism and Post Impressionism: RedOne, The Karlssons, Max Martin. Interesting how those patterns occur. . .

Lupe Fiasco was one of the most promising rappers in the game once upon a time -- actually visited Stanford for a blackfest concert -- before drifting into the doldrums. I was surprised and wary, at first, by his latest album released. Hadn't even realized it existed. But out of loyalty to the past, I gave it a chance. And the first song on the album shows that the man still has skills:

Late night choices (sigh) - Redrum - 01-28-2015
This is the price one pays for deciding reading is better than watching late night television. Stuff like this is on and it's
good. I mean, I know Jimmy Fallon is a creative, talented guy...as are so many of the folks who find a home on late night TV. It's just that this video is 3:45 mins, which in a real-time practice of channel surfing or loyal watching, can chew up an evening in accumulated 3 min. chunks. So, thanks to hulk and anyone who can catch these or at least recognize something that should be shared.

ahh maan, sucked back in again; took a while just to dig up my password.
well, ahem, happens i've got a favorite show tune in mind. Title reads "It's a brand new day", yanked out of the middle of an obscure 2008 45min Joss Whedon family bonding exercise / home-made net video.
setting the stage our hero [or villian.. it's confusing] has finally realized that in order to advance an application [similar to webmistress] into the Evil League Of Evil [also paralleling dear webmistress] said heroic-villian must kill a spiteful girlfriend-swiping soooper powerful lifelong nemesis Nathan Fillion.Â
except i shoulda typed must kill the hamm-y dude
played by NF, Captain Hammer / corporate tool. fingers crossed..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILObfEzX92k
second choice, if we get 2nd choices, mine is "a man's gotta do (what a man's gotta do)". in which our hero-villain [or villainous hero?] attempts to requisition a truly magical power source, Wonderflonium; a word seen on at least one cardboard signature line. ;~)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUdhwYUR8dc
next ditty should be DrH's homage to 50s tv western theme songs "bad horse letter", also available from YT. but i'll quit now. thanks for the indulgence cardboard. and thanks for other posters' choices i never woulda heard otherwise.
