Re: One and not quite done - Hurlburt88 - 03-12-2015

Thanks, Garvin.  I was unable to watch the game.  Looks from the stat sheet like Travis had a good game?

I also don't recall . . . when is Humphrey returning?

Re: One and not quite done - FarmBoy - 03-12-2015

It's so painful how late the game starts on the East Coast. Two nights in a row we get the 11:30 start (which didn't actually tip until 11:50). I was happy to wake up to the final score, but beating the second to last place team in the league on a late shot doesn't build a lot of confidence going into Thursday.

Re: One and not quite done - socalstanfan1 - 03-12-2015

At this point I just hope we get Humphrey back on the floor for every second of game experience he can gain this year.  Same holds true, of course, for everyone who is coming back next year.  Kind of feels like bowl game practices if we get an invite to any tournament.  Try to do everything possible to be competitive next year.

Though, with Dawkins as coach, maybe that is still hoping for too much.

Re: One and not quite done - washingtonismoney - 03-12-2015

Dawkins is unintentionally revealing (of what a mediocre coach he is) here:

Re: One and not quite done - StanfordMatt - 03-12-2015

Randle ended up taking the big shot but it wasn't drawn up that way. Or if it was, it wasn't executed that way. Rosco Allen missed the initial shot on our final possession and Randle only got his chance because of a Marcus Allen offensive rebound.

Re: One and not quite done - FarmBoy - 03-12-2015

Anyone notice Marcus Allen was our leading rebounder for the game with 9? Remarkable considering he played the fewest minutes of any starter.

Re: One and not quite done - BobK - 03-12-2015

I don't know that 6-9 and 6-10 are that short although they weren't in at the same time much for Udub
Humphrey in a walking boot

Brown, wide open on a breakaway, hot-dogged a dunk and missed it. Washington hit a transition three. We took the ball back down and Stepfan Nastic, instead of heading into the paint where he looked like Gulliver striding through a Lilliputian front line of Huskies, shot it from the free-throw line and missed. Another Washington transition three and our 64-63 lead has turned into a 69-65 deficit. We didn't lead again until Randle's final basket rippled through the net.

Garvin, I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate the effort to make up for years of people spelling Stepfan Taylor's name wrong by converting all other forms of Stefan (or Stephen or Stephan) to Stepfan.  Taylor is deserving.

I thought Travis and M. Allen both had very good games (I mostly only saw the second half), which made me happy for the future.  At least in that I can expect us to continue our current trend of being a solid NIT team every year.

Re: One and not quite done - Papa John - 03-12-2015

I share Garvin's frustrations about the game, but I also think it's only fair to note that after Dawkins called timeout with 3:18 to go, Stanford outscored UW 7-0 to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Randle's shot was the only three-point attempt for Stanford for the last 8 or 9 minutes. Even with the lead in the last few minutes, UW was still putting up three-point attempts.

Again, complementing Garvin's analysis: UW was 0-3 from the free throw line for the game (!), but 13-20 on three-point attempts. I'm trying to remember the last time I watched a men's basketball game in which one of the teams did not make a single free throw. Maybe in high school?

I can't remember a time when a team only shot 3 free throws in a game.  That's as amazing as missing all three!

Re: One and not quite done - Papa John - 03-12-2015

I stand corrected. A few weeks ago I saw a basketball game in which neither team made a free throw.

My son was playing for a winter league boys 1st-2nd grade basketball team at the local youth center. As scorekeeper, my job was to keep track of individual points scored, fouls and team timeouts for both teams.

My son's team lost 22-0 and didn't even commit any fouls. If my son's coach hadn't called a timeout (which clearly didn't work), that side of the score sheet would have been entirely blank, save the names and numbers of the players.

So congratulations, UW. You are in fine company.

I was a "coach" for my son's 1'st-2nd grade basketball "league." I use quotations, because it was nothing more than glorified practice and introduction drills. One time we tried to introduce the concept of a scrimmage and all the kids just chase the person with the ball. But I gues that explains why our 3rd/4th grade teams seem to get crush. How you get a bunch of 1st and 2nd graders to play an actual game of basketball was beyond my skill level as coach.

Sad that they had to win that game to avoid the CBI but it's probably true.  Not sure I will even watch tonight.  If they play like they did last night I think it will be over early and often.  And Brown played all 40 mins how much is going to be able to go tonight?

Humphrey was wearing a boot last night I highly doubt he will be back at all this season. But man has he developed this year.

Not as if Stanford played that great defense down the stretch - more that UW missed at least three or four wide open looks.  And keep in mind that's a team that was 2-11 after dismissing their best player, so a 2-point win off a last-second is nothing to be that proud of.

I agree that was not a game to be particularly proud of [although I felt good for Chasson that a game-winner finally went down for him this season], but, as long as we're keeping things in mind, we should also keep in mind that our 2-point win was over a team that just beat the team we play tonight by 9 points.

Do I think we're going to win tonight, no, not likely, but the somewhat relentless negativity on the Board -- after a WIN, for goodness sake -- is getting a little tiresome...

Agree 761.  If I want anti Stanford I go back to the "leg.  :)

Re: One and not quite done - teejers1 - 03-12-2015

Did someone mention coaching kids in hoops?!?  Am finishing up, likely on Saturday, stint as all-star coach for a group of PA fourth-graders in NJB.  It has been a blast, especially given that the team won their "pool" last weekend, entitling them to advance to this weekend's elimination bracket.  Our prospects?  Not good.  If we're fortunate enough to get by first game (against team from Willow Glen), we'll play a team from Los Altos/Mountain View that won its 3 games last weekend by a combined 78 points!!  [I'm not a math guy, but think that averages out to winning each game by 26 points!]  The team with the next highest point differential - which was NOT our plucky little team, btw - came in at +37 . . .

Think it's safe to say that the Los Altos/Mountain View team is the "Kentucky" of fourth grade hoops in Silicon Valley!

But back to Stanford - happy for the team (and mildly impressed) that they eked out the win last night.  I'll be really impressed if they find a way . . . any way . . . to beat Utah.  That would, quite frankly, be shocking.

If you think the relentless negativity on this board is bad, I suggest you spend some time on the Bootleg.

Now that's relentless negativity, in football as well as basketball.

Good luck in the next round Teejers!  You commented, "Think it's safe to say that the Los Altos/Mountain View team is the "Kentucky" of fourth grade hoops in Silicon Valley!"  It triggered the thought for me:  does that mean they're one-and-done after fourth grade?  The NBA sinks to yet a new low!  >:(
