I don't remember any mention of him last Saturday, unfortunately. Maybe that's an indication that he's come to a definite decision to transfer somewhere. I believe Harrell got a mention. So it's just Marx and Harrell, and who else, at fullback? More tight ends in the backfield maybe too.

Re: Skov a possible transfer? - Durty Nelly - 04-15-2015

Wow, did not see that coming.  It means Marx would be the only fullback on the roster.  Fanaika may see some time there, as I think I read he has played there in a goal line package this spring.

Good.  Not that I am glad to see Skov leave, but to me, Stanford's offense is going to be much more prolific if it uses TEs in lieu of FBs. Move to a base Ace formation given all the TE depth and make heavy use of 2 and 3 TE formations.  Having more TEs on the field in jumbo sets will create more of a passing threat out of them.

He has visited. Stay tuned.

Or soon will

A free grad degree from GT is not too shabby. We'll always have P. Skov annihilating that poor unfortunate 59er on that fake punt.

Re: Skov a possible transfer? - dabomb1227 - 04-15-2015

Also have Reagan Williams as an incoming Freshman as another FB.  Heimuli also in the class but i believe he is going on a mission.

I am actually ok with Skov transferring cause then maybe we will stop giving him the ball on stupid short yardage runs.

I wonder what the grad degree will be in, his Stanford bio says he's currently an IR major

Like to have Skov anyway - Redrum - 04-15-2015

Hard to argue about Skov's running limitations, but he was a pretty good hammer as a lead blocker.  We won't be able to run McCaffrey out on the edges all the time.  We'll have to run him inside, too and he'll need the best lead blocker we've got.  Maybe Marx is that guy but there was a reason that Skov was getting the playing time.  As a runner, I think Marx is better than Skov, but with our discombobulated play calling and execution, who knows whether Marx would have been better last year?

I had the same reaction.  I suspect he either saw the writing on the wall that he was going to lose playing time to Marx or he wants a chance to play in GT's triple option -- a rare offense in modern college football that allows a FB to play a role beyond just blocking and obvious short-yardage situations.

Anyway, wish him the best.

Skov didn't really see the field all that much last year as a blocking fullback. We didn't use a FB all the time, and Lee Ward was clearly master of that position - and very good at it.

Skov was the designated running/short yardage FB. He had the most carries of all the FBs with 12 on the season. Ward had 1, but gained 11 yards, and Marx carried the ball 3 times. After his no gain on fourth down near the goal line vs S.-C., he pretty much lost that job and became mostly a special teams guy.

It's pretty hard to see who between Skov and Marx would likely have been the starting FB in 2015 - though perhaps this move tells us.

This surprises me and bums me out like the Lyons transfer.  Even though he didn't start all the time, Skov played regularly and the guy in front of him graduated.  The Skov family has a great legacy at Stanford.  Who wouldn't want a hard hitting Skov on your team?  The goal of the football coaches is not to be liked by everyone, but when you hear about things like this, it is hard not to conclude that some players aren't totally bought in to Shaw and the other coaches.  From Lyons comments upon arriving at Michigan, he didn't bash Stanford but it sounded like he wasn't a fan of the style of coverage that Stanford was playing and he had enough of that.  I wonder if Patrick is considering Michigan as well. I am sure Harbaugh would love to have a Skov on his team.

Re: Skov a possible transfer? - yvonne - 04-16-2015

I wouldn't read into it some of the things you're reading into it. The Skov family is very much bought into what's going on at Stanford.

I agree.  It's just possible he realizes the NFL isn't a reasonable option and wants to leverage his football skills into as much education as possible.  Isn't that one of the things we preach to recruits?

Re: Skov a possible transfer? - Rally - 04-16-2015

That assumes he was offered a fifth year, and that Stanford offers the particular type of grad Ed he wants and that, if so, he could be accepted into it.  Without knowing the answer to those questions I can't question his decision.  I think it's highly unlikely he is transferring to enhance his NFL chances, particularly having watched his brother's attempt.

Re: Skov a possible transfer? - BobK - 04-16-2015

I can't say much given TOS is paid but this is a Stanford family.  Great grandfather captain of the Stanford track team in the 30's.  And of course a long time San Francisco family

Patrick wants a certain degree and not possible for a current grad at Stanford.  It's the 40 year decision folks.  Education counts too

That said I really hope he chooses his Stanford grad option

I'm afraid I missed the comments by Lyons to which you are referring, but if he was truly having difficulty fitting into the style of coverage that Stanford utilized, then this may just be a case of a misfit between a player and a system.  But given Stanford's overall defensive success over the past few years, including (until last season) noteworthy success at shutting down one of the most prolific offenses in the nation, Oregon, with their particular style, I think the onus is on the player to adjust.
Of course, it is always possible that Lyons just never quite lived up to the expectations that came with his recruitment.  Sometimes it is easier to blame the system.

Regardless, I wish him (and Skov, if he should decide to transfer) well in his new school.  These young men represented Stanford well, played hard, didn't create any embarrassing headlines with off field behavior, and seem to have taken advantage of their opportunity for a great education.  Hats off to them!
