The continuing picaresque of Jordan Morris - washingtonismoney - 06-03-2015

Morris has spent the past couple weeks dominating for the U.S. under-23 national team in the Toulon Tournament, a prestigious annual youth tournament. It looked like his summer exploits for the U.S. might be over there, but nay: now he's with the senior national team in its upcoming friendlies against Holland and Germany.

Picaresque is a great album.

Re: The continuing picaresque of Jordan Morris - washingtonismoney - 06-05-2015

Morris subbed in for last ten minutes versus the Netherlands.

And gets the assist on the go ahead goal!?!

Re: The continuing picaresque of Jordan Morris - washingtonismoney - 06-05-2015

Morris comes on and wreaks havoc, contributing to two goals and winning the game for the U.S.:

On the first goal -- and the U.S.'s third, the tying goal -- U.S. goalie Brad Guzan caught a tame shot and punted it upfield to Morris, who was matched up one-on-one with Stefan de Vrij, who is a centerback with very good Italian team Lazio. Morris turned easily to goal on de Vrij, undressing him with a pivot familiar to anyone with post play in basketball. Morris then shot on goal, which was deflected out-of-bounds for a corner. The U.S. scored on the ensuing corner.

On the second goal -- the U.S.'s fourth, and winning goal -- U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley played a through ball to Morris, streaking on the wing. Morris centered the ball for an easy tap-in.

If nothing else, Morris is a hell of an athlete -- has speed and strength to match up with the best national teams in the world, apparently.

Re: The continuing picaresque of Jordan Morris - Bruce Wang - 06-05-2015

I watched the game at a restaurant out of the corner of my eye; waiting and waiting for Jordan to get in the game.  When I got back to our hotel, I turned the TV on just as he checked in.  I never have timing this good.  So exciting!  Congrats to Morris and his teammates.  Making Stanford proud, and my wife happy that a great Stanford sports fix took only 8 minutes away from the family, though Publiette watched it with me.

Can the more knowledgeable futbol fans here explain why he doesn't start?

Well, he's not as good as some of the other options, who offer more variety. Against men/pros, it looks to me that Morris offers more in quick attacks against a retreating defense (fast breaks/counterattacks) than against set defenses. And the other options tend to offer more in those phases.

The other factor here is that Morris has tended to look better when subbed in. It's not surprising. There's a well-known "substitution effect" where subbed-in attacking players perform way better (per minute) than they do when playing the whole game. That's due to playing against tired players; you're fresh, the opponents aren't. The effect makes Sergio Aguero score+assist like Lionel Messi (per minute), which would be the rough equivalent of making Brett Hundley play like Andrew Luck.

Can't wait to watch the replays. I'm hoping Morris is getting more confident and playing more controlled. He's got the physical tools to be very good.

And here is the full set of highlights:

As nice of a centering pass as Morris had, the hard work was done by Bradley who brought the ball up and found Morris to the right.

Morris's off-the-ball work is very good, however. Note the way he stays (potentially) onside in the early part of sequence, which occupies many of the defenders. And note the way he balances the attack by drifting from left to right, eventually putting him a position to receive the ball. Morris's pass is nothing special; the work he did to get in a position to make it is very good.

Picaresque is an adjective.

Ah.  He meant to write picaresqueness.

Re: The continuing picaresque of Jordan Morris - oman - 06-07-2015

JM fits the cliche of the hardworking, but not quite skilled enough American style player.  His gait is a bit off.

My theory is that his hustle and enthusiasm "hides" his wonderful skill.  I wonder what the money ball numbers on JM are?  Good things happen when he is around.  I am really rooting for him.  He just has to pay his dues as the youngster.

Re: The continuing picaresque of Jordan Morris - ca245 - 06-07-2015

Missing from the highlights was what might have been JM's best play of the night. He turned the NL defender for a long run to the edge of the box and blasted a shot that forced a corner from the goalie. This was the corner that lead to the tying goal.

Re: The continuing picaresque of Jordan Morris - fullmetal - 06-07-2015

The pass wasn't easy either--he had to thread the needle behind that defender.  GK was caught out of position, should have scooted over as soon as he saw the pass, imho.  The pass was quick and right on the money.

No way -- pass was outside the GK box.

Re: The continuing picaresque of Jordan Morris - washingtonismoney - 06-10-2015

And Morris is now getting a 15 minute (or so) cameo against Germany. Had a nice hard shot that just missed.

Re: The continuing picaresque of Jordan Morris - washingtonismoney - 06-10-2015

Morris with a clever dummy on a pass; the pass sets up another U.S. forward for a strike, a goal, and a 2-1 lead.

Re: The continuing picaresque of Jordan Morris - PrinceLightfoot - 06-10-2015

Just felt like that was going to happen with so many good shots on goal happening in close frequency. We take the lead with 2 min left in regulation and 4 more minutes stoppage time. USA!!!
