Guessing we'll get a lot of media previewing the Stanford system. Probably best to organize it in one place. Here's Shaw on SportsCenter:

Interesting nuggets:
1. I haven't really heard Shaw address the mood of the team as being "tight" before
2. Hogan has the most wins among all active starting QBs in college football this season

If Coach Shaw has an approach to help his team play looser and less tense, he should share it with the fans for our mental health too. Stanford drives me nuts with all of its close games. USC, Notre Dame, Utah - I nearly put a brick (or shoe) through the tv at the end of those games last season. Very, very frustrating. And we will probably get more of it this year too.

Stanford games decided by 7 points or less or OT (win-loss):
2014: 4Â (1-3)
2013: 5Â (2-3)
2012: 9Â (7-2)
2011: 3Â (2-1)
2010: 2Â (2-0)
2009: 5Â (1-4)
2008: 5Â (2-3)
2007: 5Â (3-2)
2006: 1Â (0-1)
2005: 7Â (4-3)
2004: 5Â (1-4)
2003: 2Â (2-0)
2002: 1Â (0-1)
2001: 5Â (4-1)
2000: 6Â (3-3)
1999: 5Â (3-2)
1998: 5Â (2-3)
1997: 3Â (2-1)
1996: 4Â (3-1)
- 2012 really was an outlier with lots of close games, and wins.
- I didn't really like the 2006/2002 method for avoiding close games.

On the other hand, loved the 2010 team's aversion.

I think there's nothing better for the team - or the fans - than winning a close game. Builds character & mental toughness on the team, and it's often exciting as hell.

Disagree on nothing being better for team or fans than winning a close game. IMO, Stanford has played WAY too many close games against inferior opponents in the last few years. It's been frustrating as hell, and takes away from the enjoyment of the game. Watching a team underperform to talent is NOT fun and not particularly enjoyable, even if Stanford wins 7 of 12 (of course, it is more enjoyable than losing 7 of 12, but still . . . ).
And as a fan, beating the ever-living crap out of an opponent is quite enjoyable. See last half of the 2010 season. God, that was beautiful football. And I suspect building confidence while destroying opponents is equally as important as "the mental toughness" you claim is created by gutting out close wins.Â
And just so you don't think this is solely a Shaw-bashing post, I distinctly recall being pi$$ed after the ND win at home when Harbaugh failed to do the obviously smart thing and take a knee (at least once) late in the game with the score tied. ND predictably played "ole" defense and then gave themselves a chance to win the game. Same with an earlier W over Oregon State, where Stanford shut down its offense in the 2H, only to see OSU come roaring back. If not for a fumble going out of bounds in Stanford's end zone very late in the game, I am certain that OSU would have won the game.
In short, underperforming is not fun or enjoyable to watch, even when winning.

Quote:Scarlett was set to go to Stanford as an undergrad, until Jim Harbaugh left for the Niners. So, amid the uncertainty, he picked Cal.
Later, as the Cardinal showed interest in his brother, Cam, Brennan got a message to Shaw through his mother. He wanted to finish his eligibility at Stanford.
"I backed away," Shaw said. "I said, 'Whoa. There's a lot that needs to happen before we can even talk about this seriously until there's some maintenance stuff completed.'"
So Brennan went through the process of graduating from Cal and finding, on his own, a graduate program at Stanford. He'll provide depth on the defensive line, and Shaw said the brother -- who committed and signed in February -- has promise for the future.

This reminds me of what Lou Holtz said while he was HC at Notre Dame. 'When I first took the job here, people said they wanted a return to winning football. Once we started to win, people said they wanted an undefeated season. After we went undefeated, people said they wanted us to beat everybody by 40 points.'

I hope it carries over into this year, and I wonder who the emotional leaders are going to be this season.
