49ers fire Singletary -
Farm93 - 12-26-2010
OK,
Now the JH to the NFL rumors will rise to a new level. Â Almost every sports reporter will declare that JH is an obvious candidate.

They had been saying
that before the season even ended. The counter to that is, well, he\'d work for the Yorks.

The San Francisco situation had been my biggest fear all season long. Â As much as I hate the 49ers, I\'ve been rooting hard for them all year in order to avoid this. Â Harbaugh wouldn\'t even have to relocate. Â Even so, I\'m remaining optimistic...
Re: 49ers fire Singletary -

Bay Area NFL ownership is dysfunctional. Al Davis is autocratic, and the Yorks are clueless.

I agree with you Hank, this is the prospective opening I feared the most.
Ultimately, Coach H. has to decide he loves Stanford or there will
always be another opening and another attractive NFL suitor. Â I think Harbaugh does love Stanford but who knows what will happen when someone waves a wad of the very largest bank notes that only the NFL can offer under his nose? Â Not me....

I would think Gruden or Holmgren would be high on the 49ers list.
Re: 49ers fire Singletary -

I can see that. Both might be uniquely tempted to take the position as well.
Are you thinking the SF ownership wants someone with ties to the 49ers "glory days"?
Both have Super Bowl rings, both have 49ers experience under Walsh, both would want to be both GM and Coach and both are known for their strong personalities. Either would be a brave choice for a young owner without a lot of NFL savvy.
With SF in danger of becoming a "baseball town" the Yorks need someone like the Gruden or Holmgren. I hope they go that direction - for a lot of reasons. ;)

You\'re not the only one who thinks JH loves what he has, Lefty. This AP story from Sunday focused on RichRod\'s problems at Michigan, but it contained a kernel of hope from John Harbaugh:
Quote:Im just assuming hes going to stay at Stanford, he said. He really likes it there, he loves those players, but you just have to see.

I think the failure of Singletary is a clear demonstration of the inappropriateness of  Chicago Bears from that era coaching the 49ers. It\'s totally the wrong kind of football.
Why fire Singletary w/ one game to go? - Redrum - 12-27-2010
Speaking only metaphorically, Â Singletary had the stench of loser-ness that was so strong that it could affect attendance @ the 49ers season-ending home game. Â Making a change and seeing if the 49ers, Â like some other teams who changed HCs midseason, Â got a performance bounce is as good a reason to do early that which is inevitable.
I thought Singletary\'s post-firing comments were very gracious and showed him in a very good light.  I have a feeling that Mike Singletary The Coach  was less effective in communicating with and motivating his players.  The sideline jawing Sunday with his own quarterback ,  who was sassing him back,  was probably as good an example as any.  His fiery demeanor worked for himself and teammates while he played for the Bears,  but just didn\'t work for a man in command of the whole show.
I think, also, the early firing was a way for the 49ers to officially stake their claim to the HC market. Â I can see how even now some of the candidates had already had preliminary discussions with teams like Carolina that are definitely going to be on the market. Â Don\'t want any decisions made by someone who otherwise would have been a legit candidate for the SF job.
Hoping they hire Gruden or Holmgren. Â

The talking heads have been writing some of the most idiotic drivel. For example, yesterday Chris Mortenson tweeted that the 49ers may have fired Singletary so that they could get a better shot at Harbaugh.
No dumb---, the 49ers fired Singletary because he was a bad coach.

No, Mortenson\'s take makes sense to me. If Singletary\'s bad coaching is the only thing that\'s at issue, why fire him now? Why not fire him after next week? There was no rush. But if you fire him now, you get a week\'s head start on recruiting any candidates you might like, and it\'s not hard to believe Harbaugh is one of those candidates.
Re: 49ers fire Singletary -

As we know, Tyronne multi-tasked his way through the 2001 Seattle Bowl. Â If a school wants the coach then I can only guess you can get a lot done this week, even if the coach is preparing for a bowl game.
For the Pro jobs a lot of that early leg work is done with the agents, so firing Singletary early makes sense IF you are going after a college coach or an individual that is not currently coaching. Â My guess is that the York list includes a fair number of people not in the NFL at the moment.
The NFL does not allow teams to poach other coaches during the season, so the 49ers timing points to either a former NFL coach or a current college coach. Â If those non-NFL paths fail this week, then next week they might be able to expand their hunting to the NFL.
Their interim coach is quite literally keeping the seat warm.

Quite literally? Where is this seat? Does it have a name? Why haven\'t the media been allowed access to it?
You laugh, but in Green Bay, Buffalo, Cleveland - Redrum - 12-28-2010
and post-roof-collapse Minnesota, Â a warm seat is sometimes more valuable than a second round draft pick. Â Problem is there just aren\'t enough head coach firings and stand-in assistant coaches to meet the demand.
Actually, this does say something... -

In order to get permission to speak to an assistant or coordinator currently in the NFL, you typically have to solicit permission which comes after the season. Â If you desperately need a coach (along with a GM) and the NCAA is your target, you get rid of the current coach NOW and charge hard after your target NCAA coach...

Quote:Very hard for me to believe that Harbaugh would be entertaining offers this week, or that a team would think he might be. He\'s got a bowl game Monday. If the 49ers are trying to get a drop on competitors on a particular coaching candidate, I\'d guess it\'s somebody besides Harbaugh.
...picks up:
"Hey Coach Harbaugh, this is Jed York. Â I\'ve been watching you work for four years, and I can\'t tell you how impressed I am. Â We\'d like to discuss a future with the 49ers. Â I realize you\'re busy until after the season, but I wanted to contact you ASAP. Â Please contact me or have your agent contact me at your convenience."
Even in the post season, coaches listen to 20-second messages, particularly if it could double or treble your salary and let you continue to live in your geography of choice.
Re: 49ers fire Singletary -
yvonne - 12-28-2010
No need to fire the coach last week if the need (and stated goal) is to first hire a GM. This is the more likely explanation:
http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post?id=34499
This is not to say that the 49ers won\'t hire Harbaugh, just that that\'s not the reason for the firing following the game.
John Madden says... -
Extra Point - 12-28-2010
John Madden said on KCBS this morning that the NFL owners will only hire interim coaches as replacements for the upcoming season. He reasoned that if players are locked out, the coaches will also be locked out. And, who would want to begin an NFL coaching career this way?

That seat is in their Santa Clara office, at the training site. Â It is roughly 10 miles away from Palo Alto. Â If JH becomes the selection, consistent with John\'s dream, then JH would not even need to move. Â I am not sure if they have an expensive bathroom throne, but I guess they could build one. Â Then JH could have two seats in the building. ;)
The media reporters do have access to those offices, they are there all of the time. Â My guess is that local media have their sports guys on the lookout, in true TMZ-style, for agents of various GM and HC candidates.
