Another positive from the post-show blowback and my research into it: I learned that Farmersonly.com is real.  (At first I thought the band made it up.)

The negative:  Online confirmation came at the absolute worst time.  "What. Are. You. Looking. At?"

Also, I'm pretty sure "Fight On" was played during Operation Nifty Package....you know for Manuel Noriega back in the day.

Re: Iowa fans discover the Stanford Band - And are very angry and very confused - TreesAndBirds - 01-07-2016

Although I havent looked recently, I remember plenty of cows on the Stanford campus visible from 280 near the dish. I wonder if Stanford has more cows on its campus that UI?

I  thought the idea that the Band was  looking for a new rival because it doesnt have much in common with the UCB band, and that given that we are known as the Farm and have cows on campus, that UI might be a good match, was mildly witty. Of course I couldnt figure out what the band was doing in real time, so misunderstanding by the UI folks was likely, but after reading the script, I just dont understand the complaints. Especially not from a fan base that booed our players before the game.

Maybe the band needs to implement "trigger warnings" and create "safe spaces" at stadiums/sarc.

Re: Iowa fans discover the Stanford Band - And are very angry and very confused - Rally - 01-07-2016

I honestly don't understand all the angst, especially coming from our side.  As long as I can remember the band has always been criticized when away from home, unless it's a pep rally sort of thing.  Until we get 19th century uniforms and start playing Souza tunes it isn't going to change.  I don't find th band nearly as entertaining as I used to, but whether that's because the band is worse now or I am older and out of touch.  I suspect the latter.  So some Iowa fans are upset and the Rose Bowl committee is following the national political correctness trend;  so what?  Let's move on.  Nothing to see here.  And nothing changes.  The summer before I entered Stanford I had to see an orthopedic surgeon.  I told him I was going to Stanford.  He drug his diploma out of a closet and told me it was going to stay their "until the damn band comes to their sense So!"  That was 1965.

food for thought

I don't mind having a large/small or unconventional band. I do however prefer that our band changed their tone a little bit and did not offend Iowa supporters during the game. I rather have them use that special prime time to further inform everyone on TV about Stanford (especially when millions of people watching TV). For example - make sign of Wild Caff etc

This is just me but I really like when we make fun of ourselves (like nerd nation) and can still beat any PAC12 team with exceptional football.  If Iowa had a comeback and beat us in the 2nd half (like Oregon vs. TCU), guess what kind of position would we be in.

If someone is looking to take offense at you, they will do so pretty much whatever you do, and this show is about as perfect an example of that as one could imagine.  Opposing fans take offense at the Stanford Band; it's what they do.  And, when their team is getting crushed, the likelihood of that is magnified exponentially.

If the Band had called that cow the "WildCaff" and had it run all over the field, what would the Iowa fans have done?  They would have booed, taken offense, and written nasty letters.  Or, as has been mentioned already, what if the Band had formed a square and played "We are the Champions" and "Another One Bites the Dust"?  The Iowa fans would have booed and written nasty letters [indeed, arguably with more justification at the lack of sportsmanship on the Band's part, given the score at that point].

And, in this case, the show really did provide more information to the country about Stanford:  Presumably a lot more people [at least in Iowa] now know that it's "The Farm"...  :)

Sometimes [and one can certainly debate the magnitude/frequency of "some"], the Band gives offense.  Sometimes, however, offense is taken.  I really think this time was one of those latter instances.

Of course, if they REALLY wanted to offend opposing fans, they could simply play "Fight On" incessantly throughout the entire game...

Nail hit squarely on the head.

Wow...a kind comment from garvin AND a men's basketball victory that did not require scrabbling back in the last few seconds from a massive, game-long, double-digit deficit, all within the last 24 hours.  It doesn't get much better than that [other than a 45-16 Rose Bowl victory, I suppose  ;D ]

And note that, while I actually DID manage to include THOSE words here, it's only in the quote.

Not particularly sanguine about our chances in Eugene, but I believe OSU beat the Ducks fairly handily a few days ago, so maybe, just maybe,...

Apparently "Rose Bowl officials" got in the act too.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/14526174/stanford-cardinal-band-chastised-rose-bowl-representatives-hal-performance

Quote:"The halftime performance was not in line with the values of the Rose Bowl Game, and we will be reviewing our policies and procedures with regard to future band performances," the Tournament of Roses said in a statement.

Bah, humbug to you too.

Well, at least someone out there seems to get it:

BTW, does anyone know if there's a link to the entire "official Tournament of Roses statement"?  I'm still trying to figure out exactly what "values" are being referenced...

Several, at least officially:

1.  No Pom poems on tall hats.

2.  Not a single Souza tune.

3.  No roses on uniform.

4.  Failed to play Iowa alma mater.

5.  Failed to bow when passing Tournement grandstand.

6.  Encouraged unsportsmanlike behavior by cheering as team ran up score.

7.  Failure to serenade Queen and her Court.

8.  Glorifying an animal not recognized as a family pet within the city limits.

The other violations are frivolous.

Well, as to #7, doing a Queen serenade would have reigned on the Iowa Band's parade...

Re: Today in LSJUMB criticism - winflop - 01-07-2016

Maybe they should have shut off the PA during the alma mater so they could have seen the other side of the band...

Re: Today in LSJUMB criticism - TreesAndBirds - 01-07-2016

They should consider posting trigger warnings and having "safe spaces" at the stadium for people who might not be able to handle future halftime shows.

Maybe the band should consider lampooning itself and Stanford at a future show......country club campus populated by geeks and nerds and a band with questionable musical abilities who have managed thru high tech virtual reality training to create a super football team?

Re: Today in LSJUMB criticism - jacketree - 01-07-2016

I chuckled at some of this:

Quote:...at some point, that holstered u-geek-ness was going to come spilling out.

Quote:And then, at halftime of the Rose Bowl, the Stanford band — to the surprise of absolutely no one with a lick of sense — Stanford-banded their performance:

This is a tough conversation in a way because the band's actual Rose Bowl performance was fine, but the band's history precedes them.

This is a little ominous, since Rose Bowls are no longer a once in a quarter century thing for us:

Quote:The halftime performance was not in line with the values of the Rose Bowl Game and we will be reviewing our policies and procedures with regard to future band performances.

And lest everyone thing I'm a holier than thou band purist (which you do anyway no matter what I say, kind of like the band's critics), I've been there and done that.  At one annual Greek Week talent show, the crowd gathered in our TV lounge decided that regardless of talent or lack thereof, we were not going to leave minimum participation points on the table.  So we decided we would simply sing a Van Halen and/or Rush song a capella and then come back to the Love Boat episode in which we were engrossed. We trouped over to the EE Auditorium en masse wearing what we were wearing.  In honor of Charles Mingus, I wore my pork (sans pie) hat.

We followed one of the historically black frats who brought the house down with a step routine.  Problemo one.  Then we took the stage. Problemo two.  "Way to dress up douche bags."  Then we sang.  Problemos three and four.  I said Van Halen or Rush, but in the fog of war I think we did Van Halen and Rush. And maybe a few others.  We sucked. Out Loud.  Total humiliation.  Stuff was thrown.

The next year screening tryouts were held for both Greek Week and Homecoming talent shows.  Fortunately we found a pledge with talent.  Composed his own music and played the piano well.  Never won, but really unique and appreciated.

Spiny, do you have any further details about what you know or have been told about the review of the script?

Apparently the Rose Bowl also released a statement complaining about the band. This is what the Merc quotes, though it doesn't seem to be the entire text. Apparently they deny reviewing the script for the show ahead of time,
Quote:Given the fine reputations of the schools in these conferences, we have not felt the need to review in any significant detail the planned performances of their representatives,'' the Tournament of Roses said in a statement, adding that it regretted if any spectators were offended.

The halftime performance was not in line with the values of the Rose Bowl Game and we will be reviewing our policies and procedures with regard to future band performances.
The paragraph before the quoted part from the Mercury News:
Quote:The script for the show was reviewed by the university but not the Rose Bowl, which has a decades-long relationship with the Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences.

I tried to validate Wilner's references to statements by Rose Bowl organizers (the title of the article says "officials" but the body of the article only says "organizers") and by Stanford.
As far as I can find by searching through Google, the various reports that the Rose Bowl officials issued a statement are all traced back to John Wilner's article in the Mercury News.
http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_29352059/rose-bowl-officials-chastise-stanford-band
No such statement exists at tournamentofroses.com or at  rosebowlstadium.com  that I could find.

Likewise, I didn't find an independent source for the Stanford statement.

Perhaps these statements exist only in the form of email to Wilner and were not otherwise made public?    I think it is significant to understand who issued these statements (who had the authority to be described by Wilner as "Stanford").  Wilner doesn't identify the actual individuals (or office) that made either "statement".

I've heard from numerous Iowa fans that the Stanford band has been banned from road games in 2016 as well because of the Band's Rose Bowl halftime show.  I cannot find any reputable source confirming that, however.

I think they're misunderstanding the following SI article, which was updated after the Rose Bowl to mention Iowa's displeasure at the halftime show: http://www.si.com/college-football/2015/05/15/stanford-cardinal-band-road-game-ban-travel

Right?  All we've seen from the Stanford administration is the second-hand statement in Wilner's article (also reproduced in ESPN, so it may have been an e-mailed press release), and that is most definitely not coming down hard on the Band.

Yes, it was for this past year due to hazing, though they were given a pass from the administration because the Rose Bowl is the Rose Bowl.

Not that I want to in any way imply that Iowa fans would misinterpret the meaning of anything having to do with Stanford.

Thanks for posting that article.  Sounds like an impromptu rally at Larry Wilson's house is in order next time the Band is in LA.

It also sounds like it might be time for another "Apologies" halftime show, where the Band takes the blame for pretty much anything bad you can think of.  IIRC, they did one a few years back.

Finally, don't know if it's already been mentioned -- this thread FOURTEEN PAGES long, after all  :o -- but it strikes me as just a little ironic that, if Kansas State brings its band out to the game next year, the LSJUMB [such as it will be a few weeks before school starts] will be the only band on the field that wasn't actually fined this season [at least as far as I know...  ;) ]:

Maybe they can play off of the "Thanks Obama" meme going around. I realized my 10 year old son was starting to get sarcastic humor as we watched his younger brother's soccer match in the fall. When one of the teammates missed an easy goal, he mumbled "Thanks Obama" just loud enough for everyone near by to hear it.

MT, I don't have any further details about review of the script.  Iowa and the Rose Bowl may not admit that they also pre-viewed it even if they did.

The Band may have altered the script after it was approved.  This would give plausible deniability to the Rose Bowl and Iowa that the show as performed did not meet their values.  And we will probably hear more non-apology apologies from Stanford ("we are sorry if anyone was offended.")
