Reading what some people on this board write about Harvard is like reading what folks on B.earInsider write about Stanford.

An update from WIlner:
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/collegesports/2016/03/23/stanford-basketball-coaching-search-assessing-muirs-options/
He is now backtracking from calling Collins a favorite (though he lists him first):
Quote:Odds are, Collins would have a significant learning curve even if he hires a strong staff and the last thing Stanford needs after eight years of mediocrity under Johnny Dawkins is for the next coach to take a few years to figure things out.
Remember, Dawkins had never been a head coach when he arrived in the spring of 08, and I have to think Muirs giving serious consideration to the merits of hiring a veteran head coach with a record of success.
Other names (some of which I hadn't seen):
Russell Turner (UC Irvine)
Mike Brey (from UDFG)
Randy Bennett (St. Mary's)
Tom Crean (Indiana)
Jay Wright (Villanova)
Tony Bennett (Virginia)
All the names (save Collins) are head coaches, and several of them (Brey, Crean, Wright, and Bennett) at major programs.

At the risk of seeming disrespectful to my alma mater, why would Brey, Crean, Wright, or Bennett be interested in coming to Stanford? Doesn't even seem like a lateral move?! (It's ok to pile on now, I can take it . . . I think)

It was a somewhat surprising list, one that might have seemed a bit ambitious to me as well, but you never know. Still, I think it was Wilner throwing out clickbait to see what stuck more than anything based on actual info.

The latest Wilner listed speaks to the curiosity I have about this hire. My hypothesis is a twofold question:
1. Is the success of Stanford football (and to a degree women's basketball), making the power structure expect more from men's hoops?
2. Is being in the Pac-12 and possible further segregation of the haves and have nots, making Stanford look at men's hoops as more important as a business asset than it was up until now?
Having Crean, Brey, and Bennett (the perfect Stanford hire, if he can be had, IMO) on that list makes it seem like the answers to at least one, and maybe two of these questions, might be yes.Â
This tracks to some speculation I've read elsewhere that suggests the Dawkins firing can be taken to mean Stanford wants to be a relevant basketball program and is willing to invest in it. The names now being mentioned would support this. Guess we'll see.
Has Muir announced any timeline for a new coaching hire? Nothing is likely to happen until after the NABC convention at the Final Four next weekend.

Yes, please, to any of these guys. But like Garvin and oldalum mentioned, I don't see why Brey, Crean, Wright, or Bennett would be interested. A move to Stanford would mean tougher recruiting and a smaller fan base with no major upside in terms of conference or program prestige. Turner and Bennett would obviously be moving up.
I can't recall if he was mentioned in this thread earlier, but Archie Miller at Dayton just got a long extension and is not going anywhere for now.
I'll be very interested to see who else actually shows up on campus for interviews.

Miller's extension adds one year and additional compensation, taking him through the 2022-23 season.

That's a little bit of a specious argument. The recruit that Stanford turns down is unlikely to be a top-level Stanford recruit, whereas that same recruit for Harvard will be their best or second best recruit of the season. The Ivy League has agreed upon a single set of averages grades and test scores that are binding across the Ivy League. But within those averages, each has leeway to take one a recruit or two per year that are lower than the mean, as well as recruits that are considerably higher than the mean. So I wouldn't draw any broad conclusions from a single prospect.

Interesting list and very high level; could be pure speculation or just a wish list on Wilner's part. Some of these really do see like lateral moves, even considering Stanford potentially a perennial tournament team, which is all anyone can expect at any school.
Russell Turner (UC Irvine)
Obviously a move up the ladder to a familiar P5 California based team. Someone on another site has reservations about his recruiting ethics and how he is perceived in basketball circles, including high school coaches. OK that's one voice.
Mike Brey (from UDFG)
Sustained success in the ACC; paid well; apparently happy with his school and his school is apparently happy with him. Would come for a dump truck sized pile of cash maybe? Seems far-fetched.
Randy Bennett (St. Mary's)
Move up the power ladder to a close school. Frankly seems made for Berkeley. St. Mary's is cute. Second best coach in the WCC. Stanford should hold out for the best WCC coach. Gonzaga isn't cute.
Tom Crean (Indiana)
Rumblings people at IU aren't completely enamored with him despite sporadic success, like this year's run. Seems far-fetched, but maybe he's pissed enough at the Hoosiers to move for spite. Probably takes big dollars.
Jay Wright (Villanova)
A lot like Crean. They sure look good so far in the tourney. He's been there awhile and done OK; not like Monty's second half here though.
Tony Bennett (Virginia)
See Brey, Mike. I think UVA is the new Stanford. Great regular seasons; trouble against teams with play makers that go off. A tournament ceiling unless the match-ups break right. Great coach though. Worked miracles with Wazzou and the Hoos.
P.S. Bennett does have a violation under his belt. Was suspended for a number of games over recruiting. I'm not that excited about him honestly.
Given the radio silence this is going spectacularly well or is a crash and burn. Hmmm, what is the middle ground?

Let's get real. There are only two guys on this list who would even be interested in the job - Turner and Randy Bennett. The other four have jobs in much better programs and are making more than Stanford is going to pay.
There are very few major conference coaches who would even be interested, and most of those are at the bottom of the barrel and aren't guys Muir would want to hire anyway.
The next coach will either be a successful mid-major HC or a former player with some kind of coaching experience. I'm hoping for the first one, the latter is a big risk for a guy who's job largely hangs on this hire.

Mick,
The Ivy League formula has been discussed here and in other places. I have heard from Ivy League colleagues that Harvard, which at one point was at the top end of that formula has worked its way down to the middle/lower tier in order to raise some of their athletic programs. So my guess, and it's just that, is that they have regressed more towards the the lower tier Ivy athletic admissions standards where they were likely on the high side before.Â

Why in the world would Tony Bennett leave a top-half ACC program for a bottom-half Pac-12 program? Wilner's list of current HC's has 1.5 viable candidates on it

I would suspect Tony Bennett would not take our job, and generally agree with your belief that Stanford will find for it's coach someone who is not a current Power 5 head coach. However, I wouldn't quite dismiss the situation merely as "top-half ACC program for a bottom-half Pac-12 program".
First of all, a program's place in the pecking order isn't set in stone, and is highly dependent upon the guy leading it. Generally speaking, there are probably more barriers to UVa being the top program in the ACC than to Stanford in the Pac-12. [Though I have to admit that may not be entirely true, given that Bennett himself has finished first in the ACC twice. At any rate, Stanford's potential is better than bottom-half of the Pac-12.]
Maybe that would be a consideration for a coach.
Maybe the guy loves the west coast.
Maybe the guy's wife thinks the Pacific ocean is pretty.
Maybe the guy thinks coaching smart kids is appealing.
Maybe the guy just had a big fight with his AD.
Maybe the guy has a kid he'd like to see get into Stanford.
As far as I know absolutely none of this applies to Tony Bennett, and indeed his situation looks pretty good from the outside. But as a general rule it's not impossible Stanford could attract a sitting Power 5 head coach; even though that has generally not been the Stanford way.
[The exceptions I can think of in the money sports include Tom Davis from BC and Wlat from Pitt. Neither worked out all that well, though Davis went on to considerable success at Iowa.]

Not sure this has been previously been posted, but here's an...interesting ... remark from Tony Bennett from a while back:
Quote:I marveled at Stanford when I was in the Pac-10, Bennett told me, and I said, Boy, thats really whats right about college sports, the ability to compete athletically and whats going on academically. And then I looked at Virginia and thought this (is similar).
On the other hand, he obviously just signed a contract. So I doubt it, for a number of reasons. Still interesting.
