To be fair nasty side effects is probably strong; I took some literary license.
I agree totally with your statements above. While it is great to get a lot of real good recruits at one position, it can make future years tough for a while. Smart guys look at the depth chart and say maybe not. One can also assume that competing programs point out the fact that there are lots of guys ahead of you at Stanford, so why go there? Yes, a few guys don't care about that, but I am sure it is a factor to at least most candidates. It is further complicated by the fact our recruiting pool is shallower than other schools because we may have trouble getting some good football players into Stanford. We can't necessarily fix a shortage in any given year by recruiting our way out of it. The guys we need may just not be there.

What would be wrong with:
'18: Miezan, JMF
'19: Patterson, Dumani (assuming he is slated for ILB)
Probably don't need more than two ILBs every class, but probably five over every 3-year period.
It seems crazy, but I believe it is possible Stanford dropped Hollifield, or at least didn't get all butt hurt over potentially not getting him when they knew Miezan was coming. Taking three ILBs in one class isn't ideal. So no, if Stanford lands a quality recruit like Patterson, and Dumani does return to play ILB in '19, I'm not nervous about ILB depth.
I'm just not sure how good a coach Hansen is, because the ILB play hasn't been as good with Hansen as it was before him, IMO. In four seasons, only Okereke has developed into an all-conference level player, and the unit has arguably been the weakest on the team since Hansen arrived. Yes, he coached Blake Martinez, but Martinez was clearly a player before Hansen came to the farm.

I think it is the opposite. I think Miezan was added and offered a late scholarship because Hollifield turned us down and we had to do something even if it meant offering a scholarship to a high beta "project" type prospect like Miezan who was available.

Yeah, after waking up and thinking straight, yer probably right. Miezan was likely Plan B for Hollified. Still, Miezan was an All State football player, so it's not like he was chopped liver.Â

Considering Miezan was the number one recruit in the country for lax I'm going to go out on a very short limb and suggest that he may have considerably more upside than Hollifield. It may not work out like that, but it is quite possible. I'm very ok with that.

He hastagged it #cardclass19, so thinking it might be related to recruiting.

I'm going to take a semi-educated guess and start a rumor that 4-star RB Austin Jones gave a silent commitment to the class of 2019. He visited Stanford yesterday and Greg Biggins made the prediction late last night on 247sports crystal ball.

Austin Jones seems like an educated guess, but he's right in Cal's backyard, and they have a coach on staff who went to his high school. I'm not saying he couldn't commit to Stanford now, but it would seem more likely his recruitment would tighten between Cal and Stanford before the day he signs. Plus, he obviously has to be admitted to Stanford.

OF, he reported a 3.81 GPA in a 2016 interview. Certainly not a guarantee of admission, but it's a positive indicator.

This may have been what Mike Eubanks was so excited about -

Max Williams is a 4* CB from Gardena Serra, the high school that produced Adoree Jackson and many others who have played for U.SC. If true that he has committed to Stanford, this would be very very big news.
EDIT - it appears that Williams was just visiting Stanford today. Not committed. At least not yet.

What does a handshake icon mean in context of a football recruit referring to a campus visit in a tweet?
In the bigger picture, it does seem people were being a little too Debbie Downer about what they saw shaping up for the 2019 class in February. There are more offers and the vibe seems to be more interest from top targets for 2019 than there was for 2018.
For the whole of 2018, 247 reported 54 offers. By April 6, 2018, there are already 54 reported offers for 2019 recruits. We obviously don't know exactly how many there will be when all said and done, but it sure seems a safe bet to assume 60-70 at least. Spring visits are still continuing and Summer camps - that usually result in multiple offers - haven't happened yet either. And there will likely be some offers in Fall too.

Anyone want to give a rundown of what seems to be transpiring with Spring recruiting? It seems this is quite a year for Bay Area recruits. And Cal and Stanford appear to be going head-to-head for most of the top guys.

Pretty disappointing to see so little recruiting discussion when there is a lot of activity going on, but whatever. Just offered and 247 just went wild with a bunch of Stanford predictions. Now if I just knew what "APDTA!" meant...

Here are three options from Wiktionary:
APDTA
Initialism of all people don't think alike.
Initialism of all praises due to Allah.
Initialism of all patriots don't trust America.
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/APDTA
In this case, I'm guessing "all praises due to Allah".
