RE: Washington State Football Game Thread - martyup - 11-16-2019

Mills was just 6 yards shy of 500.

lex24 - lex24 - 11-16-2019

This was more about the defense.  But ok.

Beautiful.  We were outscored 27-8 in the second half.  Eight points in 30 minutes against a weak defense.  22 points total.  And Mills sets a single game passing record.  We are now, officially, the Stanford of old.

No no. There's a new hope: 494 yards of passing. The most ever!!!!

lex24 - lex24 - 11-16-2019

Pretty tough when you have to throw every down. I sure wish we were back in the days when Stanford would win a relatively low scoring game people would bitch and moan about playcalling etc. and I defend Shaw based upon the fact that they once again won a football game in the style that he has “perfected”. But those days are long gone. So now let’s see if he can rebuild.

As soon as Mills' level of play dipped, the offense fell on its face. For three quarters, his talent made the game plan look better than it was. When you see the talent of guys like Wilson, Wedington, Mills, etc., it's just clearly a group that is somehow less than the sum of its parts.

I wish you were right. Much easier to solve. When the other team never has to punt throws for over 500 yards and scores 49 points I think it’s a little silly  to place the blame on the offense and “coaching.” If Stanford happened to somehow score 50 today Washington state would’ve scored 55 or 60. Stanford was absolutely powerless to stop Washington states offense. Because they can’t match up. Because they are slower than mud among other things. That’s a much bigger problem than schemes etc. And needs to be solved through recruiting. Let’s hope they can do it

If your gameplan is to try to out-Pirate the Pirate, you can’t half-ass it. You can’t punt on their side of the 50 - and you sure as Hell cant do it inside their 40. You also can’t settle for a FG attempt when you’re down on the scoreboard and in red zone

I’m not sure that Stanford could have won today, but the coaches’ approach to the game all but guaranteed it

Recruiting is coaching.  Player development is coaching.  Teaching toughness is coaching.  And yes, this was much more about defensive failings than offensive ineptitude.  With a stiffer defense, 22 points might have been enough.  You cannot win a game if you cannot stop the other team.  Stanford failed to stop Wazzu all game.  Is that the Stanford we knew in the years 2010-2013?  No.  The formula is: recruiting, player development, strength & conditioning, game-planning, executing.  All of that is the responsibility of the coaches.  So, yes, it ultimately comes down to Shaw and his staff.

RE: Washington State Football Game Thread - cardcrimson - 11-16-2019

The worst thing about tonight's embarrassment, is that Shaw will walk away thinking the offense is in great shape.

We have depth for situations like this and our recruiting has been excellent!

I seriously doubt that David Shaw will think any offense that passes 49 times and rushes 9 times (for 29 yards) is in "great shape", even if he won the game, let alone when he got blown out.

+1 Lex

Last four years WSU has averaged around 450 yards a game running the same offense. We seem to have no clue how to stop it  This covers a broad range of defensive players.  Either we can't scheme against it, or the type of players we recruit can't defend it with the schemes we run.  I fail to see the logic in rushing 3 down after down and giving the QB forever to find an open receiver.  I would rather have seen us send 6 or 7 each time.  Worst result would maybe been an even worse beating.
And that's coaching.  And that, in the end, is why we are where we are.

Anyone who watched the USC game should've seen this sort of defensive performance coming. Especially with 2 starting DBs out.

We can't defend the air raid, and haven't been able to for years.

RE: Washington State Football Game Thread - SF_Cardinal_Fan - 11-16-2019

I can't recall seeing a game where a QB had as much time to throw the ball, play after play, quarter after quarter,  as the WSU QB had today.

The best way to stop the Air Raid is to keep it on the sidelines. Run the ball. Control the clock.

I saw no effort whatsoever to do this today, and the effort to out-throw Leach was half-assed. Don't think there was a winning formula today but the gameplan I saw had zero chance of winning.

Shaw and Anderson both vocalized their frustration with not being able to get to the QB with 4 rushers last season. Look at what the 49ers are able to do on D with a ferocious pass rush, for example.

Unfortunately it looks like that hasn't gotten better.

You seriously thought we should have run the ball more???  Seriously???

Agree with you philosophically.  Problem is, they can’t run well in general and particularly not against WSU.  They had no chance running today. So they had to throw it. No choice.

Sorry but you have to at least try on the first couple of series. There was no attempt at all.
