Overrated or underdeveloped?

Likely a lot of both.

My god our OL stinks, but McKee did not have a great night. The second and third INTs were squarely on him. Second INT was a throw he never should have made, and third INT was a bad throw. He also got away with quite a few other bad throws that thankfully found the turf.

Our D found some mojo but it was too little, too late. They stunk it up for the first 30 minutes.

I expected us to be 2-4 at this point, so I upped my prediction from 4-8 to 5-7. I'm sticking with it, given just how bad we are in the trenches. The only game I feel good about at this point is Big Game because Cal looks completely horrible. Three other games are toss ups, and I expect losses @OSU and vsUFDG.

Well, when you can’t run and your getting hit every other throw that doesn’t bode well for the QB.  Add that their was little to no separation most of the night and interceptions are darn near inevitable.

BTW - the pick 6 was as much on the receiver. He got out fought. Physically, there was no comparison between these teams. ASU the aggressor. Speed? Again, not close.

RE: Stanford vs ASU Game Thread - Phogge - 10-09-2021

The fastest receiver is Farrell. He was out last night. Does it seem that the last three years have been the worst in terms of lost time due to injuries, etc?

At least Shaw seemed a lot more animated than usual. Needs to re-evalute the defensive staff in the offseason.

No lex it wasn't. I was looking right down the line of sight on that throw. The DB aniticipated the route from the snap and jumped it. I think it was Humphries, and it didn't matter if he'd fought for the spot or not, the throw wasn't there and McKee should have seen it immediately.

RE: Stanford vs ASU Game Thread - Phogge - 10-09-2021

McKee needs time. He shouldn't come out. He also needs a speed receiver. I'm sure that there will be a bonanza of WR's in the portal but, but, but Stanford won't admit any transfers. You have to be a future Air Force pilot or no go.

RE: Stanford vs ASU Game Thread - dabigv13 - 10-09-2021

McKee is a real talent and could be one of the Stanford greats. But he's cursed with a line that can't control the line of scrimmage, get push in run game or pass protect for an extended time.....like many previous Stanford greats.

We at least have a QB who makes every game worth watching, I just hope our OL can develop and help him out some more.

Well, at least we have a plethora of fast wide receivers coming in in this recruiting class... not.  That being said, when recruiting gives you big tall receivers, you run plays to maximize that mismatch, which, to Shavita's credit, they have largely done.  I'm much more worried about an offensive line that will get McKee killed than our wide receiver corps (and with Yarosek's emergence we now have a tight end to match).

How can McKee go pro, anyways? Did they change the rules? Isn’t it a minimim of 3 years of college (whether you started or not) to be eligible to be drafted?

Oh wait, I just looked up the rule. It’s 3 years since high school whether or not you were in college, so I guess he can go. I wonder if there are examples if people leaving sooner because of their missions.

But anyway, at this point, with this much tape, I’d be surprised if McKee left.

Three years out of high school, and McKee spent two in a Mission, so he could go pro if he wanted.

FWIW: https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2022-nfl-draft-class-spencer-rattler-malik-willis-sam-howell-matt-corral

Quote:Why we’re worried: Experience
A former top-50 recruit, McKee spent two years on an LDS mission in Brazil. He returned in 2020 and grabbed hold of the starting job this season. That means he's four years removed from high school but has just 162 times pass attempts in his college career. That’s simply not enough to gauge his ability and develop him for the NFL.
Verdict: Could be QB1 in 2023
McKee’s nearly effortless operation of the Stanford offense is very impressive considering his background. That being said, how much can he realistically boost his stock in one season with a weak supporting cast? McKee seems very likely to return to Stanford in 2022, where he has to be considered a frontrunner for QB1 in 2023.

RE: Stanford vs ASU Game Thread - ADPinWDC - 10-09-2021

McKee comes back.  Stanford days were some of the best of our lives, and McKee took two more years to get there than most.
It ain't all about the money with McKee.
And, it's a fare bet his stock could go up after 2023 coming off a middling 6-6 season this year.
Even Luck came back for 2011 and still secured the #1 draft spot.  What would Luck tell McKee?

Don't get drafted by Indianapolis?

RE: Stanford vs ASU Game Thread - qwerty49 - 10-10-2021

McKee is playing Russian roulette taking snaps behind this OL, missing his best WR, and with no running game counter-threat.

OTOH if he gets drafted it could be by a terrible team, eg Plunkett/New England, and he could get hobbled running for his life behind a similarly leaky OL.

In theory if he projects as a late first  rounder that would be the best outcome for him.

I think the best outcome for him would be the belief that staying another year at Stanford would give him a better chance to make more money than going this spring. Seriously, I can't see him coming out this year any higher than Mills did, third round or so. He can do some things Mills couldn't, and probably has a higher ceiling. He will also have a full season to show his game off. However, he doesn't have Fehoko (or equivalent) to throw to, which will not showcase that part of his game and will reduce his statistical value. He has also shown accuracy issues at times. Unless Stanford runs the table from here on out, he for sure won't be a first rounder IMHO. Even if Stanford finishes with 9 wins I doubt he would be.

RE: Stanford vs ASU Game Thread - Phogge - 10-10-2021

If McKee does come out at least we should see a more with it offense. Assuming Shaw doesn't get a transfer or go with Paultz. I can't imagine West will stay, and I hope he doesn't.
