I suppose someone who goes by the name of PASportsFan should be expected to know that the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, and 76ers all reached their respective sports final in the 1980 season (the Superbowl was in 1981, but it was considered the 1980 season).  Only one of the four won a title, though.  Which?

Still to be answered: which team was recently in three major sports finals (winning two)?  Three hints; it was fairly recently (post 2010) and it was a city that surprised me.  The city has MLB, NHL, and NFL franchises. No NBA.

Your current question put a smile on my face! You did have a string (3?) of questions a few months ago that involved the downfall of
Philly teams:(

I’ll let someone else answer “who won the title”.

For the local Bay Area fans, it wasn’t the Eagles. They got destroyed by Oakland the way the Eagles just beat KC.

Moses Malone's "fo, fo, fo" team was a couple of years later, right?  My guess is the Schmidt/Rose/Carleton led Phillies. My memory is they were also a fan favorite with a "cute" nickname that I've long since forgotten.

It was, in fact, the Phillies who won the World Series at home by defeating the Kansas City Royals in Game 6 on October 21, 1980.

Who is the only MLB pitcher to have pitched in 70 or more of his team's wins in a season?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 03-06-2025

Trevor Hoffman

Wrong. I looked up the answer. Never would’ve guessed it. But it made me happy!

Here’s one. Any Giant fan can tell you that the last giant to hit 30 home runs was Barry Bonds. But who was the last Giant  to steal 30 bases?

Tyler Rogers. He pitched in 80 games in 2021, 70 of which were wins for your San Francisco Giants.

Donnell Nixon? Brett Butler? Willie McGee?

Looked it up. I was way off. Very interesting.

The answer, which surprised me, was Tampa Bay in 2020.  The  Rays were in the World Series, where they lost to the Dodgers in 6 games.  The Buccaneers won Super Bowl LV beating the Chiefs with some middling TV announcer playing QB named Tom Brady.  The Lightning won the Stanley Cup by beating the Dallas Stars in 6 games.

Last Giant to steal 30 bases. I cheated but a hint. He now leaves the dugout slowly

I just ran across the answer in a SJMN article.  Another hint - he had one of the most famous stolen bases in MLB history (which occurred in post-season play), although not as an SF Giant.

Combining the clues leads me to - Dave Roberts?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 03-08-2025

Good Mercury story. Yes Dave Roberts

In the MLB expansion draft of 1992 by the Marlins and Rockies this player was drafted and went in to be a Hall of Famer
Who?

John Lynch?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 03-08-2025

No not Lynch who was drafted out of Stanford by the Marlins and of course in the NFL Hall of Fame. But not the expansion draft. But Aplus to Terry

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Giants - 03-08-2025

Art Schallock, the oldest former MLB player died on Wednesday at the age of 100.  Now, who is the oldest former MLB player?  One clue - he is a former teammate of Willie Mays.

I thought it was Bobby Shantz. It's not, I looked it up. Very elegant hint, BTW...

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 03-09-2025

Going back to the Hall of Famer taken in the expansion draft. Trevor Hoffman to the Marlins then history made with the Padres

I was going to say Gil Hodges, taken by the Mets in their 1962 expansion draft. It's a mystery to me why that guy's in the Hall of Fame. Fewer HRs than Jeff Kent AND he played a slugger's position.
