With respect to both C.al's improvement from 1-11 to 6-7 and Washington's improvement, I am reminded of an NFL head coach (sorry, can't quite recall who it was) who spoke of the ease of going from terrible to mediocre and the difficulty of going from mediocre to pretty darned good.  He said something like "Going from 4-12 to 8-8 in a season is easy.  Going from 8-8 to 12-4 the next season is darned near impossible."

So I suppose I'm saying that I doubt that either Yikes or Washington will do much more than .500 ball this year.

What was Harbaugh's progression?
[/quote]

1-11 (pre-Harbaugh)
4-8
5-7
8-5
12-1

Improving from 1-11 was easy.  But it did take Harbaugh three years to get to a winning season, and four to get to great one.

The West Coast Offense is heavy on play calling terminology.  For the computer geeks here, think of it like maybe Python and spread offenses like Ruby on Rails.

It takes a long time to call a play in the West Coast Offense compared to others because there are so many plays, and because each one includes whether it's a run or pass, the formation, what the route is, and what the protection or blocking scheme is.  Everyone on the field has to know all three options.

OL has to know what the blocking scheme is every play
WRs have to know the routes to run and where to line up
RBs have to know whether to take ball or block and where to line up
TEs have to know to run a route or block and where to line up

Example: http://www.westcoastoffense.com/terminology.htm

The advantage of this is the QB has the ability to change routes or blocking schemes with pre-snap reads if he thinks the play that was called should be changed based on what the defense appears to be doing.

Other offenses are much less complex with much shorter play calls.  In the spread offense, for example, the QB makes his decisions about how a play will go, post-snap.  A play can be called that can be a run or a pass, depending on what the QB sees the defense do after the ball is snapped.  In some spread systems, the QB must read the defense and see the same thing as the receivers, because the routes are based on what the defense is doing.  If the QB reads man-to-man, and the receiver runs a route thinking its zone, they will not be in sync.

There are also hybrid offenses.  IMO, it makes sense to limit terminology as much as possible so play calls can be made faster.  This allows an offense to play with more tempo, and to change a play closer to the play clock expiring; more opportunity to catch a defense in a bad matchup.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I am a fan of Python.

Stewart Mandel has us as the number two team in the Pac-12, and going to San Antonio for the Alamo Bowl: http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/story/bowl-predictions-notre-dame-boise-state-alabama-baylor-michigan-state-oregon-082515

Actually, he has us at No 3, with ASU as an at large to the Fiesta Bowl.

The linked article is really focused on Northwestern, but there is not a game thread yet.  Plus, I don't know if this has been posted previously, so forgive me if it has.  It provides a little historical perspective and at the end gives some pretty good insight.

The author of that piece could do with a bit less coffee.  He spends the whole article describing as flamboyantly as possible how great they are then predicts a blow-out loss.  Strange piece.

Rule Of Tree has had some... let's say "interestingly written" pieces lately. In the past the tone was pretty sober, but I guess those authors moved on and were replaced by some guys with lots of... let's say "enthusiasm". I liked it better before.

Wasn't that a guest piece from a Northwestern writer? Hard to blame RoT for that unless you think they should have rejected it or made him rewrite it.

"Enthusiasm" that is known to mankind, or the other kind of enthusiasm?

You may be right about that particular one, but there have been a few others that made me think the same thing. They could all be some sort of guest posts, most posts certainly don't have that same tone.

Someone has no respect for the P12N.  Stanford 6th, Oregon 5th, and Pac-12 South teams 1-4.

http://reignoftroy.com/2015/08/31/pac-12-football-power-rankings-week-1/

Do I need to remind them of the last time a P12S team won the P12 championship?  Oh wait...

Is it an even bigger slap in the face to the north that they place Colorado ahead of 3 teams in the north? How many Pac12 games has Colorado won? Oh, right, they've won 4 games in four years in the league.

In fairness, it's been six years since anyone not named Oregon or Stanford has won
