this thread FOURTEEN PAGES long, after all

If you don't like going from page to page through a 14 page thread, you can set your preferences so that you will see more messages on each page, which reduces the number of pages. The default is 15 messages per page. I've chosen 50 messages per page, which is the maximum. So for me, this thread is 5 pages long, not 14 pages.

Go to Profile, then Modify Profile, then Look and Layout, then select your preference.

Same here. Long pages are the best.

If LSJUMB had made Iowa's square formations and played 'another one bites the dust', the Iowa fans would have booed that too.

This is true.  At the parade we were seated opposite the 'official' Iowa contingent (including the university president), which took up a very large bleacher section on Orange Grove.  The LSJUMB had to wait in front of those bleachers for a bit.  They were showered with boos.  This happened hours before any references to pink locker rooms or bands-seeking-bands.

It wouldn't have mattered what the band did; the respectful Iowans were certain to let them hear it.

Let's do it again - they can boo the band and our coach can hoist the Rose Bowl trophy.
[/quote]

It's quite revealing that Iowa fans were booing the band before it did anything. Apparently they just dislike the whole idea of the Stanford band, without regard to what the band actually said or did.

Given that, I don't have much patience for the complaint that those meanies in the Stanford band were disrespectful of the tender feelings of Iowa fans. If Iowa fans can't tolerate the mild jokes in the band's show, that's on them.

Surprisingly (to me anyway) Ted Miller over at ESPN has no patience for "the Stanford band is a bunch of spoiled harlots" whines of some of the Iowa faithful.

When I saw the headline, I was dumbfounded as to why in the world CLEMSON fans would be angry at the Band...  ???

Then after the first few paragraphs, I was going to suggest yet another impromptu rally, this time at Ted Miller's house, but, alas, the comment about "musically awful" squelched that.  That being said, one of the few concerns/criticisms raised in this whole discussion that strikes me as worthy of consideration [and, indeed, is prompting a number of actions that will hopefully improve performance quality in seasons to come] is that relating to the quality of the music/sound during the field shows.  I don't think the Band has ever descended to the "musically awful" level, but that is not to say that there isn't substantial room for improvement.  Acoustics aren't exactly ideal in the new stadium -- for one thing, the mezzanine areas provide a constant source of considerable white noise during pre-game and halftime -- but numbers, technique, and quality of musicianship of several visiting bands over the years have shown that a good sound can be generated there [too bad it's almost always of the Hal Leonard or, if really "edgy", Queen genre].

In short, poking fun at the other side is even better if the music is great.

I've contacted the MOB director. With a little luck, he or another member of the band will post here. If there's anything impeding their coming out for the game, we should do whatever is necessary to remove it.

+1.  Terry's dead right.  In fact...I think the reaction of the Iowa fans is the manifestation of an across-the-board inferiority complex, coupled with an inflexible idea of what college football and college bands should be.  Crybullies.

I wonder what the overlap is between Iowa fans who were offended by the band's halftime show and those who may have been critical over the protests in Missouri, Yale and other schools.

I suspect the Venn diagram would be one circle essentially on top of the other.

That band/cheerleaders would go over very well with the Iowans... :o :-\ :-*

I had a similar thought reading reddit. I'm with Mick, I bet that's a damn-near complete overlap. I hope the cognitive dissonance hurts.

Not so fast, my friend.  I found quite a few things in those protests with which to quibble, but I think it's fair to say I yield to very few in my defense of the LSJUMB.  Of course, it's pretty easy (indeed, pretty much a necessity) to become counter cultural growing up as a conservative in the Bay Area... :-)

That being said, I would agree that this episode seems to show that even those in Flyover country are capable of experiencing (and whining about) microaggressions -- to my disillusionment.

Gotta get one of the Iowa t-shirts.

The Rose Bowl formally apologized for our band?  This is chickens**t.  Rubber-spined folks like this just apologize because it's easy than defending the reality of the situation.  Now all those snitty little bitties feel vindicated that their ignorant rants were justified.

Again, a story quoting the same Mercury News, not a formal statement they received from the Tournament of Roses or the Rose Bowl committee.

Prediction.....next bowl game the Band participates in will be the most watched bowl game half time show in history. Edgy companies will line up to air their ads before/after the Band's performance.

An Iowa fan near me said Stanford should get a real band.  I fired back Iowa should get a real football team.

Rule of Tree is indeed awesome. The Iowa shirt is fine--I don't have much opinion on the band non-story anyhow. I'm disappointed that the idiot who interrupted McCaffrey's post-game interview is being even acknowledged in that "Voldemort" shirt. Deadspin did a story about him entitled, "Shut up, Shithead".
http://screengrabber.deadspin.com/shut-up-shithead-1750636095  .

Very amusing though is the tOSU basketball coach shouting "Voldemort!" during his own player's post-game interview. See that in the Deadspin article entitled, "Thad Matta Does Best Stanford Shithead Impression"

I assume that he's a big Stanford supporter since he's on the field post-Rose Bowl. I wonder if there's been any repercussions either from the Stanford Athletic Dept or the interwebs seeing as he's been identified.

Also farmersonly.com should give the band a 50% equity stake.  They've done more for their publicity than anyone else has.

I hope we're back in the Rose Bowl next year or soon.  A follow-up performance would be awesome, this time aimed squarely at the bowl administrators.
