+1 Yvonne!
For all the reasons that CT lists, that's why I hope Mark Few is on that list. I think he does have 3-4 kids that may want to matriculate to Stanford. Bennett (UVA) would be fantastic. I don't see the St Mary's Bennett getting the opportunity given the violations.Â

Why in the world would Tony Bennett leave a top-half ACC program for a bottom-half Pac-12 program? Wilner's list of current HC's has 1.5 viable candidates on it
Duh... he left his heart in San Francisco.

He may be on the list but I don't see why in the world he would take the job if offered. Pays less, MUCH higher cost of living, and frankly at this point it would be a step down in program quality. We need someone young, hungry, and good for whom this is a step up - and need to manage our expectations that if he succeeds here he will probably be gone in less than five years. Right now Stanford MBB HC is a stepping-stone job, not a destination.

You just described
Russell Turner.Â
Young, hungry, talented, competitive, wins everywhere he has been, excellent pedigree and coaching tree (Odom, Montgomery, Don Nelson), understands and loves Stanford, accustomed to high academic admissions standards (Stanford, UCI), intelligent (Phi Beta Kappa, Academic All American), NBA experience and connections, high level recruiter, personable/ magnanimous, good guy ( and a guy's guy), driven with a tough minded work ethic and integrity, family man (hey, he recruited a doctor!), roots in NorCal, has strong "presence" (Big West Coach of the Year, District 9 Coach of the Year, OC Top 100 Influential people), cares deeply about his players and vice versa etc. etc. [ In case you are wondering: sources, Wikipedia + several who have followed his career hoping he'd return, including former players and myself.]
He's the "get", the diamond waiting to shine.
Sad that people need to throw shadow for successful recruiting and competitive demeanor that cleary inspires and leads to rapid success...just opinions of people who favor other candidates and aren't informed about Turner. I guess it's political season and that's how people campaign: knock one down to raise another. Isn't Stanford primed for someone with some intensity and drive who also checks every other box on the planet?
Russ Turner is the man. Stanford needs someone like him.

Welcome to the CardBoard, Mrs. Turner! Or perhaps Coach Turner's agent. At any rate, I think you will find that the folks here are supportive of the idea of Russell Turner becoming the next MBB head coach. He may not be the dream coach (e.g., Mark Few), but he looks like a strong candidate.

Unfortunately, Mr./Mrs. Turner (or his agent) will soon learn that the Cardboard's collection of strong opinions is not paired with any actual influence at the Athletics Department. But I appreciate the effort--I'm sure Russell would make a fine coach.

Funny, no. Just a long time fan of Coach Turner (and his wife) and a fan of facts over hearsay. Glad you guys agree he would be a good choice, so now we wait.

I agree that Few is very much a reach. And yes, he wasn't interested 8 years ago, but I still think a conversation is worthwhile.  People said there was NO WAY that Bill Walsh would return to Stanford...it happened.Â
As for Turner, I completely agree with our new guest that he would make an excellent choice and he knows the program very, very well. I'm curious as to who the former players are that are promoting him?

Another MBB coaching name: Jerod Haase, coach at University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Quote: Haase has been UAB's head coach for four seasons.
He's won 20 games each of the past two seasons. UAB won C-USA this season.
Haase, 41, is a California native who was raised only 200 miles from Stanford's campus. Before UAB, he was an assistant for Roy Williams at both Kansas and North Carolina.
And yet another, from the same article: Brevin Knight, with a staff of Reveno and possible Trent Johnson.

Winflop is right that Wilner's "list" is no list at all. It has 1.5 names - 1, really. And bucketand1 confirmed it. Really, Wilner and his "source" must have been chuckling when they decided to throw out that list. Please.
Think announcement is coming soon.

Not sure I would use that example seeing as Walsh's return didn't work out very well...

He does not. Since retirement in 2009 he has been the color commentator for the Memphis Grizzlies on the local Fox Sports.

Quote:Meantime, multiple sources told CBS Sports there's a push among some Stanford people to pass on Haase, hire former Stanford star Brevin Knight and surround him with a staff of former head coaches -- specifically ex-Stanford player and assistant Eric Reveno and, perhaps, ex-Stanford coach Trent Johnson. Reveno and Johnson have both been head coaches for years. Reveno spent 10 seasons at Portland before being removed earlier this month. Johnson was just removed as TCU's head coach last week.
My guess is the "multiple sources" are the same two "Stanford people" who like watching multiple car pileups on 101. That sounds like a recipe for disaster. A complete newbie assisted by former head coaches who demonstrably know how to fail. Well, I guess there is some benefit in knowing what failure is all about. The office/locker room/bench power struggles would certainly be entertaining.
Since graduating from Stanford Brevin has:
Played in the NBA 15 seasons for 9 franchises. (NB: pretty damn impressive.)
Broadcast Memphis Grizzlies games on TV as the color analyst.
I'm sure he's ready to jump into coaching, recruiting and running a major program. Well, maybe he has a binder like Kerr did?

Kerr went from being a GM to an HC. Very different from being a color commentator who isn't part of the program from an operational standpoint.

I'm still thinking there is a possibility of Bryce Drew/Matt Lottich tandem. It would probably take a bit for Drew to leave is alma mater, but he's exactly who we should reach out to.

Why not add Nick Robinson, too? Then. we could design our entire strategy around staying close enough to hit a desperation 3 pointer at the buzzer.

Wait, Harvard now has lower entrance requirements for hoopsters than Stanford?
It never had higher entrance requirements; they have definitely come down. We have had football recruits who did not get through admissions subsequently enroll at Harvard.
That's a little bit of a specious argument. The recruit that Stanford turns down is unlikely to be a top-level Stanford recruit, whereas that same recruit for Harvard will be their best or second best recruit of the season. The Ivy League has agreed upon a single set of averages grades and test scores that are binding across the Ivy League. But within those averages, each has leeway to take one a recruit or two per year that are lower than the mean, as well as recruits that are considerably higher than the mean. So I wouldn't draw any broad conclusions from a single prospect.
Mick,
The Ivy League formula has been discussed here and in other places. I have heard from Ivy League colleagues that Harvard, which at one point was at the top end of that formula has worked its way down to the middle/lower tier in order to raise some of their athletic programs. So my guess, and it's just that, is that they have regressed more towards the the lower tier Ivy athletic admissions standards where they were likely on the high side before.
I had two sons recruited to Princeton for minor sports, one graduated in 2014, one is there now. During that process, I had a lengthy conversation with the Harvard Ass't AD who was in charge of getting athletes into the school. We discussed the process across all of the sports, including football. I'm confident that what I wrote is accurate.

Well, to be overly technical in a Cardboard kind-of-way, I am pretty sure that this piece of what you wrote isn't entirely accurate,
"But within those averages, each has leeway to take one a recruit or two per year that are lower than the mean ..."
By definition, the football team would typically have around 10-12 recruits per year who are lower than the mean - really the median but those are usually fairly close.

Nick Robinson definitely needs a reset on his coaching career. His overall record during his 4 year tenure at Southern Utah was 28-90.
