Chou still alive for first extra hole

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - CTcard - 05-24-2017

Well, that was quite the kick in the gut.

Since the horn sounded yesterday evening, on individual holes Stanford went 0-4-2.
Darkness sucks.

Damn, Chou goes down in 19 holes.

Tough 15 hours for the Cardinal.

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - Hulk01 - 05-24-2017

Wait until next year.

We lose Danielson (56th and 100th ranked amateur) but get Mika Liu (34th and 79th).  Everyone else returns.

Terry, respectfully disagree for a couple of reasons. First, Albane had the lead. The pressure was on Vaughn to be super aggressive in attacking the green with a 3 wood on her second shot. Of course hindsight is 20/20 but it simply didn't make sense for Albane to be similarly aggressive at the time. Plus, it was difficult to tell from the TV angles but it looked as though Albane had to navigate a tree on her second shot which basically made laying up her only viable option. She planned her strategy before play resumed and executed it well. Just have to tip you hat to Vaughn for making a couple excellent shots.

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - Hulk01 - 05-24-2017

USC loses three seniors (Morgan, Chen and Then), ASU loses Vaughns.  UCLA should be the other beast in the Pac-12, with everyone back along with the junior player of the year from Thailand.

We'll start three sophomores and a freshman, and a three-time NCAA match play competitor in Aubert.

High drama on the other side of the bracket as Northwestern beats U.SC 3-2.

Northwestern #2 wins 15, 16 and 17 to win 2&1

Northwestern #3 was 3 down with 3 to play then won 16, 17 and 18 to go extra holes.  But lost with a bogey to U.SC par on the 19th.

Northwestern #5 was all square through 13 then won 14 and 16 to win 2&1

With the match tied 2-2, Northwestern #4 was 2 down with 3 to play.  But she won 16 and 18 (with a par) to force extra holes. On the 19th, NW made a 12 foot par putt to get up and down from the bunker for par.  U.SC had an 8 foot putt to extend the match.  It was on line but stopped an inch or two short of the hole. By that inch or two, Northwestern advances.

At one point, it appears USC was up 3,2, 1, and 1, and down 1 in its fifth match.
Match play is brutal, but terrific theater.

Add in the drama of pauses in gameplay, etc.--what a crazy tournament.  Making it to the final four is an impressive season.  What a comeback for Valenzuela after a potentially serious, long-term injury.  There's room to grow next season, but they can rest for now having hung in there with the best.

As always Charles Schulz had the right words for this moment.

We also have Zang coming in.  Any thoughts on her ?

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - Hulk01 - 05-24-2017

Zang almost certainly is a walk on.  Scholarships are precious in college golf.

6 scholarships per each women's golf D-1 program.  from my day, the scholarships could be given in full or in partials.  if still true, I'd assume Walker spreads around the money beyond just top 6.

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - Farm93 - 05-24-2017

With different courses favoring different styles of play and the variability of match play it is really hard to believe any individual player or two will be key to greater success in 2018.

The nature of golf, and the nature of match play, means that 20 programs can credibly enter May with a chance to win it all.  A good roster helps a lot, but luck matters too.

Stanford should be in that 2018 mix, but just advancing to match play is not a given.  Just look at Bama or UCLA here in 2017.

FWIW - That horn blasts 3 minutes later and Stanford advances to the finals, and I believe they beat Northwestern.
FWIW2 - Better that ASU wins this title than USC or UCLA IMHO.

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - oldalum - 05-24-2017

Even better that Northwestern, a strong academic school that has never won, wins!  (unfortunately ASU is ahead)

Hmmm, I used to want strong academic schools to win.  Now, in most cases I want Stanford to have first pick at those likely to qualify for Stanford.

I think most players prefer to know they lost to the eventual champion.  Though in this case that might be particularly painful as a decisive ASU win will show how close Stanford was to capturing this title.

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - Spiny_Norman - 05-24-2017

ASU wins 3-1-1 and the 3 matches they won were not that close (5&4, 4&3, 5&3).  ASU put the hammer down with a string of birdies.

Strom had 4 birdies in 6 holes on the back 9 to put her match away
Liti had 3 birdies in 5 holes on the back 9 to put her match away
Vaughn had 4 birdies on the back 9 to close a 3 hole deficit; she was going to extra holes as ASU clinched

ASU was clearly the best team over 22 other schools at this tournament. And just barely better than Stanford.

yep, better by an inch or two on one of any number of putts.

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - BobK - 05-24-2017

Golf is a partial scholarship sport.  Of course maybe 6 are on full.  Â
