I'm wondering if we're going to try to run more out of 4-wide sets. WSU's small, fast defenders are largely beating us by getting around our blocks, and since there are 9 of them in the box basically every play it's resulting in TFLs or short gains. If they only had 6-7 in the box they'd be much more likely to be burned by it.
But, really, I think you're right, we keep being close to big plays and just missing. Missing the block, missing the sack, missing the throw, missing the catch. I don't really know how to fix that, but at the very least WSU is playing really, really well and not blowing us away. If we can pick it up I like our odds...

He has played very well against us in the last two years. Not terrible surprising he is doing it this year.

I dunno, Costello isn't really playing badly. He's had a throw or two that were bad, but most of them have at least given the receiver a chance. Hard to tell exactly if the plays getting blown up are on him, Shaw, or WSU playing well.

Costello is at least looking like he can make more than one read. Too bad PI wasn't called on the pass attempt to Irwin.

Costello isn't playing disastrously badly, but neither is he playing well. It's hard for me to tell, however, how much is him, how much is the line, how much is the receivers ... and how much is the refs swallowing their whistles on certain obvious PIs (from my perspective.)

Someone mentioned not letting the play call get down so far. The switchups on the Wazzou D-line work better when they can do at the last second. If we always wait until under 3 seconds to snap it, they know when the last second is. If we mix it up and snap earlier it might catch them off-guard and mid switch. But I know we like to run it down and call audibles and play a slower game.

I counted three bad throws. First throw was batted down at the LOS. He had another throw almost intercepted, where JJAW worked as DB. He also had a bad throw on the third down on the last drive, where he threw it behind Schultz.
He had one throw where there was an uncalled PI. I dont know about the fifth incompletion. Hes also taken two sacks, which is one more than any Stanford QB has taken in several weeks.
All in all, kind of a meh day for Costello. I think if Chryst were starting, yes a lot of people would be calling for Costello. We havent helped him by giving him favorable downs to throw in, We have to see how and whether he bounces back. That was one problem with Chryst; when bad Chryst showed up, he tended to have trouble bouncing back, except for the last drive against OSU. I am hoping Costello has a shorter memory.

I dont think Chryst is the answer. Might as well get Costello reps to prepare for next year as starter or Mills backup.
Sure doesnt feel like a team in control of its own destiny, but maybe theyll surprise me in the second half. Just as likely to get boat raced. Falk might go for 400 today.
