Okay, seriously. Who had the Giants going 5-1 on this road trip, with a sweep of the Astros?
Hesitantly optimistic after such a great spring continuing into real baseball. . . .

Nice win. It was Houston's #1 starter, he was 15-7 last year and made the all star team the two years before that.
There were a few near-errors, but who cares? Giants are now 5-1, third best record in MLB...behind two 7-0 NL West rivals, Dodgers and Padres. Except all of the Padres' wins were at home, and five of the Dodgers' seven wins were at home.
16 strikeouts by Giants hitters, 14 by Houston hitters.
85 wins to go...

Verlander in the home opener today at 1:35 p.m. vs. Seattle.
San Diego signed 22-year-old Jackson Merrill to a nine-year contract. Interesting model. Merrill hit .292, 24 HRs, 90 RBI, 16SB, so it's lower than market value, but after just one year of proving himself. Maybe a model for Heliot Ramos?

Win in the bottom of the 11th, 10-9. Bivens got the win with two IP, allowed one run. Verlander continues to look very hittable, giving up three earned runs in 2 1/3rd, although Kruk & Kuip said the plate ump was squeezing calls all day. Doval gave up three unearned runs. Trivino, also hittable, gave up two earned runs. Erik Miller gave up two hits and a walk, but got the hitter to hit a fly almost to the fence that Jung Hoo Lee ran down.
Adames, Wade, Bailey, Ramos; three hits each, Chapman, two hits. Had their first error of the season, Fitzgerald. Padres lost, so the Giants are half a game behind them. And the Phillies are beating the Dodgers at home, 3-0 in the 8th.

Throughout the game, the umpire’s strike zone was about the same size as a thimble. Seattle’s last reliever, Vargas, was ridiculously squeezed. Lee’s catch in center with bases full was a pleasant surprise as he took a rather circuitous route to the ball.

Do you think that was because of the wind as Krukow says here, or because the Grandson of the Wind is an incompetent center fielder...? Serious question...

It
was a tiny strike zone...and yet, the Giants still struck out 12 times. The Mariners only struck out eight times. They had six and seven walks respectively.
Padres and Dodgers both lost close games.
I don't see the Verlander experiment working out well, unless he's got another gear. He might have been a victim of the ump's miniscule strike zone. We'll see.
Robbie Ray versus Bryce Miller (4.76 ERA, 0-1), first pitch 6:05 p.m.
And speaking of Stanford alumni...
- Austin Slater is doing well for the White Sox (.273/.273/.636/.909). Has a double and HR among three hits, 153 OPS+. I always liked the guy, he's still only 32. Hopefully he gets more playing time.
- Tommy Erdman, playing for the Evil Empire leads MLB in HRs with five, hitting .286/.297/.714/1.012, 183 OPS+. And he doesn't even have a torpedo bat.
- Cal Quantrill had a good spring training (3-0, 1.125 WHIP), and a rough first outing for the Marlins, 4 IP, six earned runs, two HRs.
- Kris Bubic, 1-0 for KC, three hits and two walks in six innings, 0.833 WHIP, 1.75 FIP.
- Nico Hoerner, doing well for the Cubs, .296/.387/.296/.683.
- Kyle Stowers, Miami Marlins, .261/.433/.391/.825, 131 OPS+, doing well at corner OF and DH.
- Erik Miller, four appearances, three hits, one walk (intentional), 2 K's, 0.00 ERA
RE: SF Giants 2025 -

I think it was a combination of the sun and wind that made it such a tough play. Late in the afternoon, Oracle can be difficult for OF’s. I think Lee is an above average fielder. He proved his value by making that catch.
RE: SF Giants 2025 -

I'm curious to see how Jung Hoo Lee progresses. He's a bit above average as a hitter right now (104 OPS+) and ahead of last year's pace, he's ahead of both his walk and strikeout pace from a year ago, he's sixth in the league in scoring runs, half his base hits are doubles (he's 7th in NL in doubles), his on base percentage (.333) is comfortably ahead of league on base percentage (.312), he didn't have any errors this year or last. His range factor was considerably better than league average for CF's last year (as you imply), but it's way down this year...I think you can chalk that up to the fact he's played in just six games.

Could be. Also thought that SF pitchers are more prone to throwing ground balls...and they are, slightly. According to FanGraphs, SF pitchers are 10th of 30 MLB teams in groundball percentage (46.9%).
Range factor is calculated two ways, by the number of assists and putouts divided by the number of innings or games. Ramos is slightly below league average range factor and Yaz is WAY below league average range factor. Matos is above when in RF, but WAY below in CF. So...not sure. Too few games for an accurate assessment, I suppose.

Giants win their seventh straight game, eighth win overall on Wilmer Flores' game winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning. Final score, 5-4.
Giants have the best record in major league baseball at 8-1. They are percentage points ahead of the Evil Empire (9-2).
Some nice items:
- Yaz had his first home run, a three run shot.
- Jung Hoo Lee, two more hits, hitting .344.
- Nine strikeouts on the batting side, not too bad.
- Miller and Rogers earned holds.
- 3 for 8 with runners in scoring position. Giants have the best batting average with RISP and two outs of any team in the league.
- Matos stole the Giants' twelfth base in 13 attempts.
Some items of concern:
- Jordan Hicks (2.38 ERA) was
raked. He gave up two home runs, four more hits and a walk and hit two batters and gave up three earned runs.
- Second game in a row with an error (Matos)
- Miller and Doval both gave up two hits but the ump had a really tight strike zone...not too bad.
- Doval also had two walks...four batters in one inning reach base. Not good. He had a blown save and "earned" the win.
- Half of the Giants' eight wins have come with the Giants having fewer hits than the other team. Not a good trend.
Logan Webb vs. Hunter Greene, Reds tomorrow at 6:45.

The error on Matos only reinforces the idea of creating a “team error” category. Had Rodriguez backed up Bailey*, the runners would not have advanced. IMO, it was unfair to charge Matos with an error.
* Seeing a major leaguer pitcher fail to back up the catcher on a hit to the outfield with runners on base was something I don’t recall ever seeing. Fortunately, it didn’t result in a run for the Mariners.
One additional thought - Robles’ catch in the RF corner was good a catch as I have seen in a long time. Hopefully, the diagnosis on his shoulder won’t be season-ending….
Addendum:
Fun with numbers…
SF, LA and SD are a cumulative 18-0 v. RH and 7-5 v. LH. They are the only three teams in the Majors that are unbeaten v. RH.
RE: SF Giants 2025 -
Mick - 04-08-2025
More fun with numbers. FanGraphis is not wild about the Giants' prospects for the rest of the season, projecting a total of 85 wins (five more than their prior projections).
Interestingly, they only project the Padres to have 86 total wins and the Diamondbacks to have 85 total wins. So in the eyes of FanGraphs, the NL West will be a dogfight for the three teams in between the Dodgers (96 projected wins) and Rockies (64 projected wins). Incidentally, the Giants were 6-7 against both the Padres and Diamondbacks last year.
Jung Hoo Lee has been exciting to watch. Six doubles of 12 hits, 10 runs scored (T5 in MLB), had a 400 foot flyout last night, playing great center field, three stolen bases no caught stealing, .333/.385/.500/.885.

The Mariners Robles will be out for at least 12 weeks but does not need surgery per Adam Jude of the Seattle Times. Great catch but he paid a price.
Any opinions on the outfield netting at the Giants Park?

Watching the replays definitely made me wonder if the netting was intended to be more tightly pegged into the ground but somebody had removed the pegs. The netting definitely didn't stop him from falling into the wall. It didn't seem to even slow him down much. The wall appears to be padded, but only minimally.

Yes, Goose. I saw the same thing and it reminded me of watching Giants players of the past crash into the ivy wall at Wrigley expecting padding but getting the full brunt of the concealed brick and concrete curtain wall instead.
The Giants usually fix field issues once they are identified. For example, they moved the bullpen after OF Steven Duggar's injury from chasing a foul ball over the pitchers mound. Early on the (PacBell Days) the front office would highlight bullpen visibility from the stands as a fan friendly design benefit so that was a noticeable adjustment.
Here's hoping they fix this before they lose a key Giant outfielder even if it's too late for the Mariners and Robles.

That netting is new this year and is definitely intended to protect the fans from hard hit balls, not protect the players from the wall. They even have a movable net over the right field track for members of the Gotham Club who are allowed on the right field warning track during batting practice. Players used to be able to run into the right field corner. I think the padding is exactly the same that was always there and is the same as the brick portions of the outfield wall. The low wall he jumped over is also new and may be an issue for player safety but many stadiums have low walls in the corner that players need to be aware of. Robles really ran full speed and jumped into the air with complete reckless abandon. None of the stadium netting is designed to absorb that kind of impact. Players are obviously learning the new aspects of the park this year, but I don't think our players will be jumping into the netting like they are in a bounce house or netted trampoline. Still, it would probably be better if they attached the netting to the side of the wall without the low wall. I hope Robles recovers quickly. It's a bummer that everyone will probably learn from his injury.
Cheers,
Pete F.

That was an amazing catch. Unfortunately, Robles will be out for 12 weeks with a fracture
and a dislocated shoulder. That's a really rough injury.
Giants lost 1-0. Rough game. As I've pointed out before, in half of the Giants' wins, the Giants have had fewer hits than their opponents. The Giants are #18 in OPS+ and #13 in runs scored per game, largely because the Giants lead MLB in batting average with runners in scoring position.
Is that sustainable? I don't think so. Giants are #21 in BA (.220), #18 in avoiding strikeouts, #20 in most walks.
The opposing pitching staffs were the Mariners, Reds and Astros. Reds pitching staff is #3 in MLB, and the Giants have faced their best pitcher (Greene) twice. The Mariners are #14, slightly better than MLB average. The Astros are#7 in MLB ERA. So...it's entirely possible that the Giants have just been facing great pitching.
Incidentally, the Giants' ERA is 2.61, 2nd best in all of MLB. They are T8 in WHIP (1.19) and 10th in FIP, which doesn't bother me much because the fielding has been superb and is likely to continue to do so.
Second question: Will Verlander get better? We'll see today.
Third question: Will Doval recover? I doubt it. He seems not to have the fortitude to stick to improvement adjustments. Hopefully he does.
