Sweet! Those long losing streaks are really demoralizing and I truly admire the players who stick with it and keep competing. My high school boys basketball team had a multi-year losing streak. I was there when they broke it by beating our rival and we all stormed the court and celebrated like we had won the CIF championship. Congrats to our team!
Cheers,

Yes, Bob, to echo your point, very happy to see that Caity and Carmina will be joining next year's class. Carmina, in particular, is a great addition to the outfield rotation, given that Bessie and Lauren will be graduating after the season. Carmina also led the entire state of California in steals last year, so there is no reason not to run more moving forward.

Thx. 64 steals. That's incredible

Stanford loses first game of a three game set with UCLA by a score of 13-8. Cardinal left 12 runners on bases, including 8 in the final three innings alone. Card had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with no outs, but unable to score. That is now 28 runners left on base in last two games alone. Stanford now 1-15 in conference play, and the coaching staff is now 3-61 in 2+ seasons of Pac-12 play.

Last Sunday a two-out error by Oregon State opened the door to 4 unearned Cardinal runs and ultimately the Card's first Pac-12 victory since the second of a meager couple of conference wins in 2015 (Coach Hanson's rookie season at Stanford). Yesterday, despite its gift-wrapping of 9 walks and 2 errors to the Cardinal, UCLA's superior (to Oregon State's) firepower (and the 6 walks with which they themselves were gifted certainly didn't hurt either) proved more than enough for the Bruins to overcome themselves and ultimately bag a much expected W.
To me, the game's most interesting aspect was this: Six pitchers on the Cardinal roster and the third player to enter the circle (not 7th, not 6th, but
3rd!) is our top-flight shortstop who would then proceed to pitch 2.1 innings with a compromised (by her absence at SS) defense. This "picture" was worth a thousand words of Crippled Confidence from Coach Hanson with respect to
the current state of Cardinal pitching.
Feb. 10, 2016:
The happiest player on the Cardinal team might be junior shortstop Kylie Sorenson, who was forced into pitching last season. Not recruited as a pitcher, Sorenson took the brunt of a 4-12 season with an ERA of 7.14.
"No one got to see what Kylie could do last year," Hanson said. "I'm excited for the year she is going to have" [in light of the fact that 2016 would thankfully afford her the opportunity to focus exclusively on playing her natural position].
(source:

Message delivered, loud and clear: The current state of this team's pitching (for Pac-12 play exclusively, Sorenson's 2015 ERA of 7.94 as a so-called
emergency pitcher would rank her 2nd on the current staff, a mere 0.01 behind Kiana Pancino) can be summed up in one word: Desperation.
Yes, I know, the soon to arrive Maddy Dwyer will be a nice addition to next year's team. However, I remain skeptical that a #52 ranked player can and will work miracles on a scale that would elevate this team to heights of mediocrity (the best that can
ever be hoped for, in my opinion,
under Hanson & Co.) in the near future.
So, Bob, do you have names and/or other info regarding the pair of Stanford pitching prospects expected to follow Dwyer aboard a bit further down the road?
TIA

Re: Softball -

It should be noted that Hanson is not the pitching coach. Instead it's one of the greatest softball players ever. True it ain't working

Cred, Stanford currently has a pitching commit in both the 2018 and 2019 classes. The pitcher in the 2018 class, Molly Millar, is currently ranked #98 overall (irrespective of position) in FloSoftball's Top 100. As such, her recruiting ranking is comparable to Nikki Bauer, who I think has great talent and would develop into at least a solid pitcher, if not a great pitcher, with better coaching. The pitcher in the 2019 class is not currently ranked in FloSoftball's Top 100 Players (irrespective of position).
I was really impressed with Kylie's performance yesterday. She may not be a pitcher, but she competed and challenged the UCLA hitters throughout her relief appearance. That is the biggest difference I noticed between our staff and Kylie's appearance yesterday. Our pitchers seem too overly cautious with regards to challenging hitters. As a result, we end up allowing a bunch of walks, and after we have given up a few free passes, we overcompensate and put the ball over the heart of the plate, which leads to a home-run or extra-base hit.
As such, I saw the "picture" you described more from the perspective of our pitching staff lacking confidence.
In any case, we have (and will have next year) Top 100 players up and down the lineup and in the pitching staff. At some point, the AD has to realize that the coaching staff is just not getting it done, despite the talented players on this team.

The stats do seem to support your perspective as expressed above. 3.40 walks per 7 innings pre-Pac 12 "season", compared to 5.83 per 7 in Pac-12 play. A few fewer walks in pre-conference play might be expected specifically because the hitting, overall, one would think, is somewhat less disciplined at the plate than is Pac-12 hitting in general, but a difference of 2.43 walks per game is quite significant, seeming to indicate that our pitchers are indeed trying to be too fine with the conference competition. If so, that's a shame, because, overall, the defense has been getting the job done this season and the frequency with which "walks" have been crossing the plate has been generally lethal.
By the way, here are Sorenson's 2014 stats as an emergency pitcher, for Pac-12 play alone: 13.33 ERA, .460 b/avg for the opposition, so enormous improvement from Year 2014 to Year 2015 (7.94 ERA, .379 b/avg). If she has stepped forward even a fraction of
that since 2015, well, our shortstop may now be our pitching "ace".

...overall, the defense has been getting the job done this season...
OMG, just saw the box score for today's game.
6 Stanford errors, matching the TOTAL for the previous 16 conference games. What to say? What to say?
At least I will amend the above claim to say that the defense
had been getting the job done in this
Pac-12 season (not nearly as impressive pre-Pac 12),
until today.
