Xavier Woods came out of nowhere, maybe not enough time to take all the right classes or retake tests?  Was he offered once CB Johnny Johnson did not get in?

Xavier Woods was offered in the fall, IIRC.

late September on the Woods offer.

I'd be very surprised if the AP and retake discussions had not occurred during the summer when Woods attended Stanford's Monday Night event/camp.

on CB Board late spring/early summer, I think Burrows, White, Hargreaves, White and Hawkins were at the top of it with Green, Johnson and Likely.  we had some traction with Hawkins but that disappeared with the USC offer.  Johnson was always a stretch academically.  evidently he put in the work but it was not enough in the end.

staff will need to do better in '14.  judging from early DB offers, the '14 class is deeper/richer than '13 for Stanford.

Re: Class of 2013 - Extra Point - 01-28-2013

Stanford has an offer on the table to a Vanderbilt decommit: 4 star running back Johnathan Ford. He decommitted this week after taking an official to Auburn. Shortly thereafter a host of schools contacted him. Don't know if he submitted an application. Don't know if there is still time to recruit him. Don't know if  Shaw is still interested. Anyone know anything?

Re: Class of 2013 - StannyBoy - 01-29-2013

After seeing the schools he's now considering I can't imagine him being interested in stanford. And I don't think there is time left to apply. I'm sure Shaw is now on to recruiting for the 2014 class.

Re: Class of 2013 - stan01 - 01-29-2013

Savaiinaea interview:

"Savaiinaea, who bench presses 375 pounds, runs 40 yards in 4.59 seconds and has a 3.4 GPA, has visited four colleges: Stanford, Texas A&M, Notre Dame and UCLA. He actually committed to Stanford as a junior, but withdrew that commitment.

He explained, "I visited there (Stanford) as a junior. It was the first time I visited a big college. It was the awe of everything. When I took my official visit this year, I saw that it wasn't the place for me."

He said that on signing day he will make his choice between Texas A&M and UCLA."

Ha, I like his comment about A&M.  Alot.

Reminds me of the (para)phrase....Not everybody likes licorice, but those that do really like licorice.

Savaiinaea's culture shock at A&M would be massive, I think.  He'd be better off sticking to UCLA imho.

Re: Class of 2013 - Spiny_Norman - 02-04-2013

My $0.02 - the biggest area of unmet need is RB.  I believe that Stanford only has 4 scholarship RBs on the roster - Wilkerson, Seale, Wright, Sanders (though I suppose that Young could move to RB if needed).

Class of 2013 seemed to be a weak one for RBs with Stanford admissions profile.  This has to be an area of focus for 2014.  The team cannot go 2 years without signing a RB.

Re: Class of 2013 - washingtonismoney - 02-04-2013

Four scholarship running backs is enough, especially since Young's a hybrid RB/WR. There's no problem in 2013. For 2014, we'll probably take two backs -- a speed back (probably/hopefully Christian McCaffrey) and a power back (????).

Re: Class of 2013 - Renaissance Man - 02-04-2013

Don't forget that we also have four fullbacks on the roster--I think we will see some carries for Hewitt and Meinkin (if he comes back at full speed).  I can see them lining up behind Ward and Skov in various situations.

What about Jackson Cummings as far as depth is concerned...

Re: Class of 2013 - socalstanfan1 - 02-05-2013

I, too, am not too worried about the RB position.  Barring a rash of injuries, 5 backs (I'm counting Kelsey Young as someone who could be moved to RB if needed) should be ok, and three of them (Young, Wright, and Sanders) are young, so they should be around for a few more years.  It will be good to add a RB or two this year.

Nobody has mentioned this, but in looking at some film of Sean Barton running the ball, I would not be surprised if the staff at least considers him as a runner when he returns from his mission.  Granted, the competition may not be great, but he looks like he could be a load, and if we keep recruiting top notch LBs and DBs maybe he finds a spot on offense.

I know we recruited a bunch of receivers last year, but I think we'll all feel relieved when a couple of them step up and actually become productive players.

Re: Class of 2013 - stupac2 - 02-05-2013

In case you wanted another reassuring take, here's Wilner and a couple of FOX analysts on our class (as well as Cal's SJSU's).
For the lazy here's the bit on Stanford:

Quote:Overview: The Cardinal has a small senior class and just over a dozen scholarships available. Because quantity affects the recruiting rankings, the class is rated only No. 55 by Scout and No. 60 by Rivals — a source of concern for the  faithful.

It grades out far better — middle of the Pac — when you consider only the average number of stars per player.

But Stanford doesn’t always follow the standard script when it comes to recruiting, preferring instead to identify players who fit its brand of physical football.

(Nobody recruits fullbacks and tight ends like the Cardinal.)

Unlike last year, signing day should be fairly quiet. The Cardinal has already moved on to the class of 2014.

Biggins says: “Fans should not be concerned at all.

“They got the QB they wanted in Ryan Burns, and I love their tight ends — they’re quickly becoming Tight End U.

“Kevin Palma, Sean Barton and Peter Kalambayi make up a great linebacker corp, and Francis Owusu is one of the fastest and most under-rated receivers in the region.

“When you combine this class with last year’s haul, they did an amazing job and filled all their needs.”

Huffman says: ”There is a lot of worry among Stanford fans that the class isn’t perceived as being very good, but that’s because it’s small.

“They did a good job filling needs; they always do a good job identifying guys who fit their style of play.

“They have been able to turn their attention to the juniors because the current class is easy to maintain. I expect their ’14 class to be close to what they signed last year in terms of how it’s received.”

Wouldn't surprise me, actually. But he probably also gets e-mails, and of course there are comments on the stories/blog posts. Although for his sake I hope he doesn't read those, some of those commenters are brutal.

Why wouldn't he? This place is the best source of information, analysis and laughs related to Stanford on the information super highway.  Though it has been quiet around here the past few days.

Re: Class of 2013 - yvonne - 02-05-2013

I wish the athletic department believed that. They never include us in their surveys as a potential source of information about the Cardinal. Other boards and services are.

I think I added CardBoard to "other" on the season ticket holder survey. If enough people do that maybe they'll start listing it.
