Re: Class of 2014 - washingtonismoney - 06-28-2013

And here's Drukarev making what we knew was official, official: http://stanford.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1520689

Re: Class of 2014 - washingtonismoney - 06-28-2013

With the Chryst commitment, Stanford rises to #2 in the Pac-12 and #42 in the nation in 247's consensus real-time rankings. Stanford's per-commit average score (247 combines the four major recruiting services' rankings together and assigns them a normalized rating between 79 to 100) is first in the conference.

Re: Class of 2014 - washingtonismoney - 06-28-2013

And to keep your expectations subdued, here's Harbs on Chryst:

Quote:“Honestly, he reminds me of what Andrew Luck looked like when Andrew was his age in school,” Harbaugh said. “They look very similar in how they play the game, their physical tools and skills. He’ll make somebody a very fine college quarterback. I don’t think I’m going out on a limb saying that.”

Re: Class of 2014 - washingtonismoney - 06-28-2013

Of Alijah Holder, Greg Biggins writes, "Oceanside (Calif) DB Alijah Holder is a very good looking prospect, long, lean and very physical."

Re: Class of 2014 - washingtonismoney - 06-29-2013

Continue keeping expectations low. From Bruce Feldman:

"Very impressed with Keller Chryst here at @elite11. brobdingnagian #Stanford commit looks like a 25-yr old right now."

Re: Class of 2014 - Bruce Wang - 06-30-2013

This has to jump start recruiting this year and next. I'm sure there are players that regret passing up the opportunity to play with Luck. cough robertwoods. Who would turn down the possibility of playing with the next Andrew Luck with the prospects of accomplishing something even he didn't do? Unless of course Hogan beats them to the punch.

Re: Class of 2014 - OutsiderFan - 06-30-2013

As everyone reading this knows, Andrew Luck is one of the great all-time leaders in football history.  Yes, that sounds a bit hyperbolic, but to me guys with the leadership ability of Luck should all be considered all-time great leaders.  They are pretty few and far between.  It's one thing to have great physical skills OR have great leadership ability, but another thing entirely to have great physical skills AND be a great leader.

Does Chryst have Luck-like leadership ability to go with his great physical skills?  If he does, Luck comparisons are fair and it would be quite reasonable to believe Chryst could be a recruiting magnet.  If he doesn't, it probably makes sense to temper hopes and expectations about Chryst's "Pied Piping" ability.

Another thing to consider...  When Luck came to Stanford the program was very down.  Though Pritchard might have been a strong leader, he didn't come close to Luck in the physical ability department.  Luck kind of had the room to immediately take a leadership role in the program because he was clearly "the man" waiting in the wings as a Frosh on a bad team.  Now, with three straight BCS appearances, and Kevin Hogan poised to be the team leader for a couple more years, will Chryst, or even Burns or Lloyd have the room to develop into the undisputed team leader Andrew Luck was?

This is my hope as well. The on-field impact of top QB prospects are highly uncertain. But if his signing can bring in a couple of top O-Line prospects or skill position players, then the impact is immediately tangible. 3 years from now, we could very well be asking "what if" after Chryst, Burns, or a 2015 top QB transfers after losing out in spring football and bemoaning the lost scholarship that could have gone to a non-QB. But if a top QB also brings in some other guys who stay, and solidify the team foundation, it's an offer well spent.

Who knows, maybe Chryst can put in a few calls to Mr. Peppers and talk him into remaining open to the idea of playing on The Farm and figure out a way to schedule that official visit.

Re: Class of 2014 Has anyone noticed... - CochinoJanks - 07-01-2013

That the man named after a car and a country, once considered a lock for the Game Cocks, seems to have had the lock picked?  Their fans seem to be resigned to having lost him to Stanford.  The only problem with this is I can't find substantiating evidence.

This is what I have: http://www.cockytalk.com/showthread.php?p=3820076

6-5, 292 | 40: 5.51 | Class of 2014

4*s ESPN 131st out of 150.

Not to shabby.

Can anyone add to this?

Spain - Redrum - 07-01-2013

Stanford has been on Spain since his junior year.  There are two competing sells:  South Carolina and UNC are all about home and the fun of playing before friends and family.  South Carolina can offer a chance to play in the SEC.  UNC is trying to regroup after a calamity.  Stanford offers something completely different.  It is waaaay far away.  Some kids like that.  It is the top academic choice among the three.  And, it's football program is newly arrived among the elite.  It's offense really showcases OL prowess.  We don't do it with spreads or hurry-up offenses.  We feature big bodies executing an NFL-style offense.

But, it's not for everybody.  Stanford just lost out on a really big, talented DE who opted to stay home in Iowa.  And we were pretty confident, based on his statements, that our academics/football proposition would win out.  Go figure.  So who knows if Spain really is a lock for Stanford?  It will all depend on what Spain wants from his college experience.

Maybe it had something to do with that "ROI" analysis that indicated South Carolina was dead last.

Add on South Carolina - Redrum - 07-01-2013

It was notable to read that linked board.  There was a lot of moderation and respect given to Stanford.  It used to be that fans in the SEC could not comprehend why kids from the South would want to play anywhere else but the SEC.  Now, at least in the linked thread, they seem to regard Stanford football credible and the academics as a credible reason to opt for the West Coast.

They reserved most of their abuse for UNC.

Re: Class of 2014 - PrinceLightfoot - 07-01-2013

I would be shocked if Spain doesn't commit to Stanford.

He has been out to campus three times and scheduled for a fourth later this month. He also plans to announce his commitment in late July. The timing of the last visit and announcement along with all the time and financial expenditure visiting campus from clear across the country is very telling. Does anyone know of a situation where a recruit visited campus 2+ times from the East Coast and did not commit?

Re: Class of 2014 - yvonne - 07-01-2013

Rivals' North Carolina site says it's down to UNC and Stanford. The writer doesn't know much about Stanford, though:

Quote:Stanford, of course, has been a building program in the PAC-12 in recent years, playing in Rose Bowls and even competing for a shot in the BCS National Championship Game a couple years back. They're a prestigious academic institution---the Harvard of the West---and anybody that graduates from Stanford is well positioned for future success.

Re: Class of 2014 - yvonne - 07-01-2013

We really need him and Tucker. Without the big guys up front, all this talk about quarterbacks is meaningless.

It's a great point. I can't say I have any insight into the football prejudices of HS football players in general and those from the southern hotbed in particular. But if the hardcore fans of a traditional SEC power who have BCS hopes (even if they are exaggerated) can respect the thought process that would lead one of their top recruits to pick Stanford over them, that's got to say something for the esteem Stanford has developed in HS football recruiting.

I'm sorry.  Stanford is not the Harvard of the West.  Stanford is Stanford.  Maybe if Harvard had a better engineering program and BCS-bowl winning football program.  Then again they do have a MBB team that makes the Tournament.

Re: Class of 2014 - yvonne - 07-01-2013

Well, that's not the only issue I had with that quote. We played a single Rose bowl over the past few years, and haven't been in the hunt for a national championship, unless he's looking at the Fiesta Bowl year, in which we had as much chance of not playing in any BCS bowl as we did of playing in the BCS Championship game. Other than those three things, it's completely accurate.

Re: Class of 2014 - FarmBoy - 07-01-2013

I would say we were solidly in the mix for the BCS championship in 2010 and 2011. If not for the Oregon loss in each year, we would have been playing for the crystal ball.

But if some writer on the east coast wants to inflate our credentials by having us play in multiple Rose Bowls, I have no problem with it.

And Stanford is not a "they"; the university is a singular entity and takes the pronoun "it" in this type of sentence.
