The way our D was playing tonight, no question punting was the right call.
If you want to question something, question Stanford's inability to convert on 3rd down. We had a horrendous 3rd down completion rate throughout the game. What were we? 2 of 9 on 3rd down behind that line?Â
When you are winning in the trenches like we were you expect to see a conversion rate above 50%. We saw just 2 of 9 - Ouch .... Got to see improvement there.

The running game has worked when ever we have stuck with it.

I think the punt was the right decision there, though I can understand going for it on 4th there. As we saw, a punt puts the ball in the hands of their most dangerous player.
I don't understand why people can't fathom criticism of Shaw. This team has shown several times that we play poorly on offense on the road. Today I don't think the playcalling was that bad, I think Hogan should shoulder more of the blame for not making plays that were there. Still, at least some of that falls on the coaches for not having him prepared, or perhaps not putting him in a position to succeed.

If we win this one going away, the D.ucks might actually take us seriously. By managing to seal the victory with only :01 on the clock, though, we've got them right where we want them -- thinking all they have to do is phone it in to beat us.
What a strategy...and to disguise it so well and work it to such perfection!
That Shaw is a genius... ;)

Bad decision to punt. Up by 8 you can win the game by getting half a yard that should be a no-brainer
Wow, I've gotten used to people doubting Shaw's calls when it is not warranted, but doubting a punt on the Stanford 35 with 1:43 to go on a 1 possession game?
Wow.

The odds winning are overwhelmingly better by going for it on 4th down with half a yard needed than they are punting and playing D.

Our offense's total inability to get a first down or two to close out the game when it is on the line in the fourth quarter is very frustrating.
Second week in three it has happened.
Oh, well, it sure beats a loss.

I know it's a little cheesy to quote oneself in a subsequent post, but I did note in the "Predict the Score" thread:
I have no idea whatsoever what the score will be, but I know this with absolute certainty:Â at some point Shaw will call for a run when we all wished he had called for a pass OR he will call for a pass when we all wished he had called for a run...
...and we'll STILL win! :)
I just wasn't counting on having to wait LITERALLY until the the very last second for the last part to come true...

What is this about not punting on 4th?
With Stanford's D, you punt. They will hold. Even if they don't hold it is unlikely they will give up the 2 point conversion.
The momentum switch that would come from not making a 4th down conversion would be epic. Punt and let your amazing D finish the win they had already earned for Stanford. Running for it on 4th down would suggest you don't trust your D. Which would be insane since the team was only in the game because of the D.
As a coach you punt. You show you are a coach that trusts your team and move on. That's what happened. The D held. Didn't even give up the TD. A little power running earlier in the half would have been nice, but once again Coach Shaw did enough to win. He is now 30-5 as a head coach. I am confident no one on this board could do better.
The D will need to bring that level against Oregon and the Offense and Special Teams will need to play much, much better, but I believe it could happen.

Of course you're being facetious, but I think we caught the Ducks taking us a little lightly last year.
It ain't gonna happen this year.

I think I saw on some crawl somewhere that Duke won today while going 0-11 on third down conversion attempts.Â

Two other interesting stats tonight ...
Time of Possession:Â Stanford: 21:27Â Â Oregon State:Â 38:26
>>>Â Tough to get the full benefit of wearing down the opposing defense if we let them rest for nearly 40 minutes.
Total Yards:Â Stanford:Â 273Â Oregon State:Â 288
>>> While Oregon State was inept running (24 carries for 17 yards - just 0.7 yards per carry) they still managed to outgain us in a tight game. Hard to blame the defense that performed so well for us but our offense deserves some blame for putting the game on the defense and keeping them on the field most of the game.
Ok ..... some days the defense carries the offense and this was one of those games. It's fitting that Shaw put winning the game in the defense's hands at the end of the game.

It is long since past time to retire (erase the play from the playbook) the reverse wishbone run up the middle with the Ogre package.Â
There is simply no room to run the ball with so many bodies piled up. It's an ill-conceived play with tight line splits. Stanford has run it far too many times with poor results for that play to ever be run again.

You are no doubt right, but at least we've done pretty much everything we possibly could [consistent with continuing to allow for this game still to be one of the most important regular season games we've ever had] to
encourage them to take us lightly... :)

How did you determine that the odds are overwelmingly in favor of going for it? Exactly what are these odds you are talking about? I have seen a lot of teams in this same position over the years and I can only remember a couple of times where a coach at any level did that. If you are somehow correct, how do you explain someone with all of Shaw's experience not knowing the odds?

Re: Stanford vs. Oregon St. Game Thread -
washingtonismoney - 10-26-2013
Look, the offensive concepts and playcalling sucked today, for two specific reasons:
a) Conceptually: Why did Jordan Pratt receive the second-most snaps of any wideout? Why was he targeted so much? He's a great story and (seemingly) a great guy. This does not justify playing him over Whitfield and Rector, who have caught the ball 15 times to Pratt's one. Other offenses would utilize a player with a
39.5 yards per catch average. In our offense, Rector has had one catch since his Washington State breakout game.
I suppose in our base 22 offense, it makes sense to play Cajuste over Rector. Cajuste is damn good too. But why does this have to be our base? There's a brobdingnagian gap between Rector and Hopkins (who, again, is another fine individual who should not be playing as often as he does.) I have this crazy idea that we should play Cajuste, Rector and Montgomery
at the same time.
b) Playcalling: OK, one thing if Hogan appears hurt or sick or something. Fine. But it's another thing to have him throw so many obviously unsuitable routes and go away from demonstrated, in-game strengths -- that is, running the ball. Or, if you don't want to do more Hogan running, just run the ball in your base power stuff. How Gaffney got only 22 carries is beyond me.
This game would've been comfortable if not for some weird, fluky stuff. I'm hoping that doesn't blind our coaches to deep, serious problems. The offense hasn't scored over 30 points since September. There are issues here.

Yeah. If you are going to run that play every time, do the exact opposite of the ogre. Spread the defense.Â
The off tackle ogre plays seem to have a far better per carry average, and they make sense since you have big guys off tackle.

Giving your D an extra 35 yards or so to defend VS gaining half a yard on offense. Is a no brainer decision. You go for the half a yard and in the unlikely event you don't get the half-yard you can still play D. As long as we win I am happy but we can still acknowledge it as a mistake
