# 10 is darn close to # 8 I would think. Alanna Smith

Which rankings website are you using? ESPN Hoopgurlz has her at #100

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - Jskass - 11-08-2015

Actually in this case, they clearly both chose to play close to home (and must have felt more comfortable and likely to succeed basketball-wise at Baylor vs. Texas).  I'd say clearly this trumps ANY academic reputations -- people at Cal must be REALLY disappointed because they were supposedly in the running for Chou.

I don't see her on the list...but in any case, hopefully because she's not from the U.S., the scouts haven't had an accurate look at her and she can blossom into an All-American candidate during her time on the Farm

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - BobK - 11-08-2015

I see they removed the foreign players. Look at them Smith # 4.  We discussed this at length in the bootleg.

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - TheFarm07 - 11-10-2015

I'm not on Bootleg currently.

ESPN's new recruiting ranks has us at #8.

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - BobK - 11-10-2015

PN at 5 as if Sunday

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - 81alum - 11-10-2015

PN ranks our 2015 class as 20th with Alanna Smith our top recruit, but our 2016 is ranked much higher.  Quite interesting that our 2016 players are considered much better as a class than our 2015 players.  I would not have thought so.  Also, these ratings have been compiled without accounting for Mikaela Brewer, so perhaps our ranking will go up when they give us credit for all four recruits.  But here are the PN ranking of recruit classes for 2016:

1 Maryland
2 Texas
3 Notre Dame
4 Baylor
5 Louisville
6 Stanford
7 Texas Christian
8 Arizona State
9 Vanderbilt
10 Connecticut
11 Florida State
12 Oregon State
13 Michigan
14 Oregon
15 Michigan State
16 Washington
17 North Carolina State
18 Oklahoma
19 Southern Cal
20 Ole Miss

Stanford, Arizona State, Oregon State, Oregon, Washington, and SC all within the top 20.  After UCLA's haul last year.  The conference looks to me to be on the way to becoming the most competitive WBB conference--a far cry from a decade ago.  The years when anyone would win every conference game may be permanently gone--as with MBB.

This little video announcing Nadia's signing is quite touching.

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - 81alum - 12-07-2015

This is an interesting article about Brewer from over at the FBC:

http://fbcrecruiting.blogspot.com/

This was particularly interesting:

Quote:“There were a few schools that I was very serious about, and ultimately, Stanford was my number one choice for a long time,” Brewer said. “I had to wait on admissions to get into the school first, but they were the number one choice for a while.”

Turning that around, it may be that Brewer became Tara's choice for that scholarship quite a bit earlier than we may have realized, with a wait on admissions.

The rest of the article certainly makes her sound like a classic Stanford WBB player--academics high priority, puts the team first, etc.

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - BobK - 12-07-2015

So hard for us to know but interesting sign for sure.

Btw Carrington played the other day.

Done with rehab already? Good to hear, I guess. I hope she didn't come back too soon.

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - 81alum - 02-01-2016

(11-08-2015, 07:47 AM)81alum link Wrote:Bob tipped me off about a recent article about Pivec's commitment:

http://www.seattletimes.com/sports/high-school/lynnwood-basketball-star-mikayla-pivec-chooses-oregon-state/

Quote:Many expected Pivec, a 4.0 student, to pick Stanford. And while she felt she had a good relationship with longtime coach Tara Vanderveer, she said she worried a bit that Vanderveer might retire before she graduated.  “Stanford has great academics, but there were a few red flags,” she said. “I thought that it may not be as good fit for me…I’m not sure how much longer (Vanderveer) is going to coach…but if I’d chosen Stanford I don’t think she would have been there the whole time.”

Quote:Pivec said she likes the atmosphere at OSU, which is coming off its best season in school history as Pac-12 champions, just missing the Sweet 16 after getting upset by Gonzaga. “At some schools, it (basketball) gets to be more like a business and you lose that personal touch with the coaches and the players,” Pivec said. “You definitely want to win, and that’s the ultimate goal, but you can have fun while you’re doing it, too.”

Well, there are only so many possibilities.

1) Pivec did not get past admissions and is looking for a face-saving excuse.  I don't know how likely this could be with her grades, but Stanford does turn down the majority of the 4.0 students who apply.  In thinking about this from the student-athlete's point-of-view, it takes a strong ego for a high school kid to seek a slot on our program given that something that is generally so private (admission) can become somewhat public, and I would not blame a family or recruit at all for seeking a way of concealing that outcome.  It can create a dilemma that no other Division I scholarship school creates.

2)  She simply may have connected better with Rueck than with Tara, who does tend to emphasize that students approach the game in a professional, business-like manner.  Tara has lightened up a lot over the decades, though, and it is clear that the players do have a lot of fun together.  It is hard to believe someone would trade a Stanford degree for an Oregon State degree for that reason alone, though.

3) She may actually believe what she said about Tara and retirement but the information was baseless rumor-mongering.  This might have been information other coaches used to raise those "red flags" in her mind.  "Why only a two year extension?"  etc.  Would the other Pac 12 coaches like Rueck engage in that kind of behavior?  Pretty despicable if true.

4) Finally, and we should ask this ourselves, could there be any truth to the retirement rumors?  Tara has always been impeccably honest in her dealings with everybody, so if she herself is taking it a year at a time and cannot guarantee to a recruit that she will stay for 5 more years, then this could explain the inexplicable--why both Katie Lou and Pivec went elsewhere.  While this may not be the case now, at some point in the future she will consider retirement, and given her honesty her recruits will know of it before it happens.

So...anyone have evidence as to which of the four it is?
Mikayla Pivec, who was reading the Cardboard, has been in touch with Bob to clear up this speculation.  She was admitted to Stanford--has the coveted admissions letter in hand--and decided to go to Oregon State for personal reasons.  This communication has taught me a couple of things--first, Mikayla seems like an outstanding young woman--she is obviously bright but also polite and quite thoughtful about both her decision and her communication.  I will certainly be cheering for her every time she plays someone other than Stanford!  Second, we here on the Cardboard should always keep in mind that recruits, players, and their families do sometimes read this board.  That should not change our robust and substantive conversations, but we (I) should temper how we phrase our speculation about these young people.  Good luck, Mikayla!

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - BobK - 02-01-2016

Mikayla wrote me back in Nov but I couldn't see the entire note. Yesterday looking for something on Twitter there it was.  Agree 81 what a wonderful young woman and I'm a brobdingnagian fan

I have seen her play and Oregon State has a winner

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - TheFarm07 - 06-20-2016

Sabrina Ionescu picks Oregon. Graves has a brobdingnagian class (7 players) coming in. Not sure if he can get them all to coalesce this upcoming year, but they will be a threat going forward.

As Graves has settled in, this entering recruiting class is a very big threat indeed.  Oregon is clearly shaping up to be our biggest competition 2+ years out--probably replacing Oregon State and Arizona State.  I agree that this year may be rocky with the loss of Alleyne and half his team being freshmen.  I believe that several of their recruits were obvious Stanford targets until their grades did not come through.  I have the highest respect (as does Tara) for Graves--Gonzaga gave us fits in the past--and now we have as Pac 12 competition an ethical, effective coach who seems to be able to vacuum up a lot of excellent basketball players with B+/A- GPAs.

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - BobK - 06-21-2016

ESPN has new recruiting rankings.  We are 9 Oregon 3 and 3 more top 16

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - 2006alum - 06-21-2016

Since they have a pretty emaciated recruiting section right now and I found it hard to find their rankings list, here's the link.
