McCaffrey almost certainly has insurance in place, and given his projected draft position a payout in that range would be reasonable. OTOH, Last year Jaylon Smith was almost unanimously projected to be a top-5 pick but fell into the second round after his bowl game injury. The first five picks in the 2016 draft received contracts ranging from $23.3 million to $27.9 million; Smith signed for just under $6.5 million. So in his case the injury cost him significantly more.

I think this is crap, and like many other posters here this takes him off of the pantheon when compared to Toby, Luck, etc in my personal Stanford HOF.

College football fandom certainly has a vicarious aspect to it, and I think the reason this stings a lot of fans is because we wish we had another chance at playing one more game with our buddies, whether that be high school, college, intramural, whatever. To see someone seemingly throw that away for monetary reasons questions the whole basis of our fandom.

I popped a broken and dislocated finger into place to finish a meaningless IM football game against some loser USC frat, and I was applying for surgical residencies! It's a good thing I didn't have an agent telling me how much money I was risking...

Couldn't agree more.  Extremely disappointed in him.  And I thought the '80s were the "me" generation.  Get some insurance if needed, but don't abandon your team.  Darrin Nelson would have played. Plunkett would have played. Elway would have played. Gerhart would have played. Luck would have played. Thousands of guys over the years with more heart than fame would have played.  And you can bet the Farm that Bryce Love will play, and play his heart out.

Unfortunately gotta say I agree here.  Whole family looking forward to see CMac go out in a blaze of glory.  It helped cement our decision to go.  Now 5 plane tickets have been purchased, hotel rooms reserved, tickets from Stanford bought.  Of course we're going to cheer on all the Stanford Cardinal there, but leaves a bit of a sour taste.  Of course it's his body and his career, but still doesn't sit right :(

Re: CMAC not playing in Sun Bowl?!? - martyup - 12-19-2016

I am torn apart by this decision by CMAC.

Part of me feels that he is turning his back on the school and the program that allowed him to become a high draft prospect.

Part of me understands his decision to avoid risk of injury so soon before the draft.

Part of me is selfish in wanting to see him one last time lead the Cardinal to victory in a bowl game.

Part of me knows how hard a decision this must have been for him and, in a way, feels sorry for him.

Part of me is pissed off at him for putting himself above his team.

Like I said, I'm torn apart and just sad.

1.  do you support CM's decision because it is a rational one and players should be empowered; thus, whatever he decides vis a vis playing or not playing (at any point this season), is fine with you?

2.  would you support CM sitting out the Sun Bowl, but not a national semifinal?

3.  would you support CM sitting out the Sun Bowl, but not a NY6 Bowl?

4.  Alamo?  Holiday?

5.  If McCaffrey decided after Game 6 of this season that "I've shown enough for the NFL, so I'm going to sit out the rest of the way to maximize my NFL potential," would you have supported that?

It strikes me that you can be "all in on CMac's decision, whatever it is."  But after that, the "principle" behind the decision is completely eviscerated.  If the concern is avoiding injury and maximizing prep for NFL Combine - which is apparently what it is - then it's arguable that the Bigger Bowls (against better/more ferocious teams) present a higher risk of damaging NFL prospects.

And then, of course, there is bailing on your teammates and coaches before the season is over.

After the Fiesta Bowl ending, I wasn't sure teejers and I were ever again going to agree about anything Bowl-related  ;D, but I was wrong.  These are my questions and sentiments exactly.

Also, I'm having a hard time understanding why I should care about a game that the players -- according to some speculation here -- do not really care about themselves.  If that is really the case, it would certainly be disappointing...and, even worse, possibly the first sign of a program about to start declining.

I wish I knew something about how much this type of insurance costs.  The Jaylon Smith example only shows that he could not bring himself (either affordability or personal risk assessment) to purchase asufficient amount of insurance.  Perhaps companies would be unwilling to issue larger policies.

I don't think any insurance company could command a sufficient premium to guarantee something like a ~$20mil disaster.  Plus future earnings...?

Re: CMAC not playing in Sun Bowl?!? - DC 86 - 12-19-2016

According to ESPN these policies typically cost $10,000 for every $1,000,000 of coverage. I have not seen total disability policies or loss of value policies exceeding $5,000,000 each, yet that is the figure that is frequently reported, which makes me think that insurance companies are unwilling to go beyond this amount.

I support a young man making a rational and reasoned decision, at any point in the season. I'd be disappointed as a fan if this were a national semifinal, but I still think I'd understand the decision. Anything less than that, and I have no problem and no disappointment with it.

Bailing on teammates- maybe there's something there. Didn't see any jerseys with "Teejers" on it, though, and I went to every game. So, hard to say on this one, no?

Bailing on coaches? What, by putting their bowl bonus in jeopardy? The bowl bonus that the player can't collect? Yeah, not worried about this one either.
