Well, Cred, the defense had been getting the job done exceptionally well until today, as you noted. We had what can only be described as a defensive meltdown today, with 6 errors leading to 5 unearned runs in a 6-5 loss. As you pointed out, we had as many errors in one game as we had in our previous 16 Pac-12 games. The errors spoiled an outstanding start from Carolyn, who otherwise only allowed 1 earned run. Our freshman 3B has been great offensively, but she has struggled all season defensively. She had two really costly errors today, and has 4 in our last 7 games. On the season, she had a .926 fielding percentage (.923 in conference) prior to the two errors today.
I also have no idea why Montana Dixon is not starting at catcher. She had a clutch two run home-run in the seventh inning to cut the lead to one, and she was hitting .265 on the season with a .363 on-base percentage prior to the home-run. She is also a former Top 40 recruit as part of this talented freshman class.
Unfortunately, the junior who has been starting over Montana allowed 2 stolen bases, committed a throwing error that helped lead to the first run of the game for UCLA, and is hitting less than .200.
Disappointing that another winnable game slipped away today.

It took a little digging, but I now have an answer for the now former puzzler that you introduced above: Hanson's general willingness to sacrifice offense in favor of tighter defense is why MD is not starting at catcher. Big picture: MD has thrown out 5 of 27 (including 1 of 8 in Pac-12 play) on attempted steals this year versus 6 of 14 overall (including 3 of 8, Pac-12) for AP. (Incidentally, that's 4 Stanford opponents caught stealing in 16 attempts for Pac-12 play, presenting rather a stark contrast to zero-strategy Stanford's 0 runners caught stealing in ZERO attempts, Pac-12.) Same continuing theme at the 2B position--offense (.121 b/avg, Pac-12) sacrificed in favor of strong individual defensive play--as well as earlier when a couple of sub-.100 (in Pac-12 play) hitters succeeded each other with starts in LF.
Of note, however, yesterday's two steals by the Bruins were nos. 3 & 4 of a string of four consecutive stolen off of AP since she last nailed a would-be thief. Translation:
Offense Sacrificed For Nothing more or less has been the principle employed at this position for games 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 of Pac-12 play.
Of further note is that the team roster lists MD's position as "Catcher/Infielder". I wonder if her background includes any 3rd base experience. If Cowles continues to struggle at that position perhaps she (Cowles) will be returned to the outfield or, alternatively, assigned the DP role, with MD getting a tryout at 3rd. Could be an experimental option worth exploring even if the experience is
not there.
BTW,
still haven't a clue regarding the question of why Hanson started a player mired in a 5-for-45 slump at "clean up" (yielding quite predictable results, unfortunately, and quite possibly contributing to the loss of the tight game featuring that blunder) once upon a time last year. The game was Stanford's 28th consecutive (of 33, ultimately) in which the then badly slumping player had
at least two plate appearances, despite the fact that she began (and ended) the game sporting a sub-.200 batting average for the year. Go figure.

Stanford swept by UCLA, as Card fall 8-1 to the Bruins. Stanford is officially eliminated from NCAA tournament consideration, as the team is guaranteed to finish with its third consecutive losing season. Card now 1-17 in Pac-12 play. Carolyn Lee had another good start for Stanford, but the offense struggled by posting only 1 run on three hits, while stranding 8 baserunners.

I happened to run into the tired but happy UCLA softball team at San Jose airport preparing to fly home after completing their sweep this afternoon.Â
They got their picture taken at the gate with the entire team holding up two fingers. Not sure why but the team looked tired but happy. No I'll will to UCLA but I'd sure like to see teams leaving the Bay with fewer smiles next year.

Softball has 7 games left (mid-week on Wednesday at home against St. Mary's, followed by a road series at Washington before ending the season at home against Oregon). Senior Day on May 13th against Mike White's squad.

Wish it were otherwise, but I have less than complete confidence that the number of games left in the season and the number of games left in Hanson's career at Stanford will prove to be one and the same number. That certainly
should be the case, and I
think it will be, but, in the words of the quotably immortal Yogi Berra,
https://www.brainyquote.com/photos_tr/en/y/yogiberra/110034/yogiberra1.jpg
Even with this season's addition of 8 Hanson recruits (inactive player Maya Jackson excluded from the count) Hanson picks still comprise less than 40% of the team, and that fact can be pointed to as an excuse (albeit a flimsy one, in my opinion) for the past 3 years having just been wasted away, for the most part, and for perhaps another year of waste to come as Hanson is gifted with just a bit more "rebuilding" time.
However, if four years' negligible improvement in conference play winning percentage posted under Hanson at Dartmouth (from 61.1% for year 2010 to 62.5% collectively for "Hanson years" 2011 thru 2014) established Hanson as a Dartmouth success story then, to my mind, three years' significant decline in conference play winning percentage posted under Hanson at Stanford (from 20.8% for year 2014 to an anticipated 4.2% collectively for "Hanson years" 2015 thru 2017) establishes Hanson as a failed hire at Stanford, and it does so NOW, as analytical consideration given the fact of the existence of a somewhat smaller body of data (three years' worth at Stanford versus four at Dartmouth) from which to make a performance evaluation is more than offset by analytical consideration due the fact of the existence of a major quantitative difference between the negligible improvement in conference play winning percentage (from 61.1% to 62.5% = +1.4) under Hanson at Dartmouth and the significant decline in conference play winning percentage (from 20.8% to 4.2% = -16.6) under Hanson at Stanford. In a nutshell, Stanford Softball should NOT be made to endure a 4th year under Hanson & Co.
For the players' sake particularly, I certainly hope to witness the end of the abysmal Hanson era at the conclusion of this season.

Current record is 1-17 in league with six games left against #5 Oregon (41-6) and #7 Washington (37-10). I'm going to go WAAAAYYYY out on a limb and predict that coach Hanson is gone after this season.
Re: Softball -
d4cohn - 05-05-2017
Stanford loses first of three game set to Washington by a score of 1-0. Carolyn Lee continued her terrific form from the past few weeks, striking out 5 and scattering six hits. Very poor showing on offense, as the Card wasted 6 walks and left 10 on base without scoring. Card were also only 3-for-14 on advancement opportunities. Stanford now 1-18 in Pac-12 play. Coach Hanson recorded an ignominious milestone tonight, with her 100th loss as the HC at Stanford.
Re: Softball -

Card pull a stunning upset on the road against #7 Washington, winning 6-0 over the Huskies! Whitney Burks posted 4 RBI's to continue her outstanding weekend at the plate, including a 2-run home-run to right-center field. Kiana Pancino was simply sensational in the circle, allowing only 1 hit, while forcing 11 flyouts. Cardinal pitchers have only allowed 1 run in the first two games of this series so far.
Well deserved win for the players!

Well deserved win for the players!
Also, an exceptional performance today from Kristina Inouye who, hitting in the 2-hole, contributed four hits in as many at-bats.
Certainly didn't hurt having the player who now (including today's HR, not to mention 4 RBIs) has hit more HRs in Pac-12 play than the rest of the team combined and who also has the team's 3rd highest batting average (among the more or less "regulars," so to speak) versus 2017 Pac-12 competition taking her cuts in the "clean up" spot today, as opposed to, say, a career sub-.200 hitter mired in a 5-for-45 slump (see Reply #186 of this thread), right, Coach?
ZERO walks in 7 innings pitched by Pancino -- how utterly refreshing!
Perhaps the team picked up a recent pointer or two from the CARDboard (see below) while Hanson was looking the other way?  ;D
d4cohn (Apr. 29 post): "Our pitchers seem too overly cautious with regards to challenging hitters. As a result, we end up allowing a bunch of walks, and after we have given up a few free passes, we overcompensate and put the ball over the heart of the plate, which leads to a home-run or extra-base hit."
http://www.gostanford.com/news/2017/5/6/softball-big-dog-on-campus.aspx (May 6 game summary): "Pancino did not permit a walk and primarily let her defense work, tallying only two strikeouts. Her defense did not let her down and made every play it was tasked with."
Well done, team!

Appreciate it Cred. Unfortunately, the team couldn't follow up on yesterday's big win, losing the series finale 10-2 in five innings. Carolyn had a rough outing today, giving up 5 runs and 4 hits without recording an out. Defense also struggled at the end of the game, giving up 3 unearned runs. Our junior catcher allowed a pass ball and two steals that helped lead to the final three runs and the run-rule decision. Stanford falls to 2-19 in Pac-12 play, and has still not won a Pac-12 series since 2013. Card close season at home against Oregon this Thursday-Saturday.

Still, the late-innings damage might well have been limited to but 1 unearned run capitalizing on a 4th inning passed ball if not for the 2 walks issued in the bottom of the 5th and final inning. After a wonderful one-game respite, it's back to playing with fire with the free passes.
Her '15, '16 and '17 teams now a collective 4-65 in Pac-12 play, Hanson is an Oregon sweep away from failing to collect in 3 years' time the total number of conference wins secured in the single "down" year immediately preceding her arrival at Stanford.

Yes, former Stanford pitcher Madi Schreyer:

BTW, their roster also includes an outfielder named Casey Stangel. Too close to the "Old Perfesser" not to notice.

This team really could have used Madi Schreyer these past two years. Or Carley Hoover and Kelly Barnhill for that matter. We had a national championship caliber squad lined up for these past three years under Coach Rittman had the situation not played out the way that it did.
Regardless, it is just really sad to see this team (and the previous two for that matter) have to deal with the fallout. The question I would ask Bernard, as this season draws to a close, is how many more senior classes have to graduate and leave the Farm, without ever coming close to achieving their aspired team goals in softball, for your coach to finally be able to institute her "culture", "process", and to quote her most recent tweet, "daily habits". Or is a single road victory in 3 years against a Top-10 team evidence of the progress being made in instituting that culture?
