Re: Oregon Game -

Oregon put up little more fight than Rice did, and Stanford made them pay for it. I hope Love's ankle is ready to go for the games that matter, though it'd be nice to continue his H-man campaign with a solid chunk of stats from the upcoming Oregon State game. Thank goodness for byes.
Chryst shocked me with a good performance. I wonder if he was suffering some injury during U$C + SDSU, et al. Looks like a completely different guy, although his running might still look gimpy. I guess the OL have accelerated their improvement lately, which is great.
Big ups to the defense, which held serve without Phillips and Kalambayi. The secondary made Oregon pay for attempting to pass. Burmeister will want to forget about this one.
Special teams even got in on the action with a blocked punt returned for a TD, though that means the offense only scored 35 points and not 42. Shoulda had that JJAW TD before the half instead of bobbling it right to an Oregon defender. And the punt/kick coverage teams looked really solid with their tackling.Â
A lot of faces saw some action, which is good for the non-redshirters. Great to see Donald Stewart involved in the passing game as well as Wedington making Oregon tacklers look silly.
Can't remember much else, gotta hit the hay soon. What a game we stayed up late to watch!

Speights! You forgot to mention Speights!
A solid debut! (Has he played before?)

I think Speights is an excellent prospect. When Love decides to move on (which hopefully will be later rather than sooner) I think he will definitely make his presence felt.
Yeah, if you saw Chryst's performance against SDSU and then last night you would wonder if you were looking at the same player. Sure hope it continues.
One sign that we played well last night. The absence of the 2-3 posters who only show up when we are doing poorly to make negative, snarky comments.

We're #29 in the country in fewest tackles for loss, FWLIW. Oregon is#4 in the country in sacks.

I've noticed the absence of one in particular. So the Cardboard has trolls?

I also liked the play with Tyler passing to Burns. Nice to see both players who have had their struggles connect on that.Â

Chryst and the OL looked fantastic last night, but that defense was only a small cut above Rice's.
I'm thrilled by the dismantling on both sides of the ball, but that was a BAD tem in yellow & green with a band that looked like it worked at Hot Dog On A Stick at the county fair.

That one was a fun crowd pleaser, and I bet the players loved having a chance to run it in a game. Especially Tyler and Burns, as you said.

Lombardi got into a funny tweet battle with an Oregon fan over whether or not the Ducks have improved. Kind of amusing to see a Duck fan with the energy to argue that a 49-7 beat down has a silver lining.

Some of the snarky fans, jpri, actually attend the home games and root the team on.
BTW, 8:00 p.m. crowd was WAY better than afternoon game. Very pleasant temps and pretty good vibe in the building, at least in 1H.
Chryst was excellent (surprisingly).
I think that his first long sideline pass came on 3rd and 2 when JJAW maybe had half a step on the defender. Perfect ball. Some might question whether that is a high percentage play on 3rd and 2, but there is no disputing that it was perfectly executed by Chryst and JJAW. So good for them.
Agree with others that the OL was very good and looks to be improving on a weekly basis. That is #1 basis for hope (that and a much-improved Chryst).
I'm guessing the timeout on the fourth and 2 by Oregon was due to the fact that Stanford had 10 players on D (on a down where a fake was not out of the question). Whatever the basis, it was a fortuitous turn of events as Stanford just smothered the subsequent punt attempt (and as soon as it was blocked it was a TD - not a Duck in sight as the ball tumbled toward the end zone).
Was really hoping Love would get one other big run (35-40 yards) to log another MONSTROUS game. As it was, the Monster fizzled after Q1. Do you think that was because Stanford went away from Love or Oregon closed the gaps?
I'm not sure why any team ever passes on Stanford - or more particularly, why Oregon didn't run it on every down in 1H. That was alarming with Phillips and Kalambayi out. But the D gave Oregon nothing in the 2H . . . and they liked it!
Seriously, I give the Oregon fans credit for sticking it out and remaining outwardly upbeat/friendly when their team just got canned on the field.
P.S. The fumble by Costello on fourth down didn't matter - that play was going nowhere anyway.

Having watched Tyler play in high school and attended his signing ceremony, I've waited a long time to see that play last night. Very well executed. And it gives opposing defenses yet another threat to consider going forward.

Shaw was asked about the play at the presser. He said they have been working on it for the last 4 weeks in practise just trying to get everything perfect. The guys apparently rolled their eyes in practise this week when Shaw asked them to run the play. They never expected the play to get called in a game. Apparently Burns caught the ball perfectly every time in practise.
Fun to watch.

The time out on the punt block was because we had two guys with the same number out there. You dont want to see that, but hey, cant arhue with the result. We almost blocked another one later
On the fourth down, I thought Costello was going to sneak it; its hard to know if it would have succeeded, but as soon as the exchange was fumbled it was all over.
You can find a couple of nits to pick in a really nice win but they are pretty minor. I wish we had gotten some points off the turnover, as I did worry a little bit that Oregon would take the opening kick off of the second half and drive down the field to make it a two TD game. I felt much better once we forced that punt.

The play occurred on 2nd and 11.
[A later long completion to JJAW was on a 3rd and 4.]

Well, mostly it fizzled because Love twisted his ankle.
While Love didn't have any big runs after the second series, he generally was getting pretty good yardage. I suspect if he had been healthy in the second half, he would have put up monster numbers as the Oregon defense tired and lost heart. Some of those nice gains by Speights and Scarlett he would have turned into large chunk plays (there was a particular run where Speights burst through a nice hole then ran dead smack into a tackler at about 12 yards. While it was a good tough finish, I have seen Love in similar situations make a quick turn to the side and then just run past the tackler).

Well, Oregon barely passed on Stanford. They had 13 attempts on the game, 5 of those in the fourth quarter.
The 2nd half was pretty great. Oregon managed a total of 74 yards (inclusive of penalties) in the entire second half, with the biggest chunk of that coming against the backups at the very end.

I had the exact same thought on that play. In fact, there were a couple plays in that second half where the runner made it to the second level and I thought, "Love could have scored on that one". He doesn't always, of course, but you like his chances one on one.

Me three. I liked what I saw of Speights -- he runs like one of those bullets in Super Mario -- but I wonder if it's a bit of an asterisk given the lopsided score.
