No apology necessary, it wasn't clear at all. I agree that it seems a stretch to argue a Chinese national who went to high school in Calif. who had the academic record needed to get into Yale didn't understand the admissions process to Ivy League schools, but she submitted a false application and was rescinded. But the prosecutors haven't indicted the parents, so I suspect they don't have enough evidence on them. I don't remember the timeline but they probably didn't have a wiretap on them.

Assume for the moment that these foreign parents who did these payments to Singer and donation to the foundation suspected it was for a bribe. How would the FBI/DOJ PROVE that they did? Do you think Singer was dumb enough to spell it out in some written document, or through an interpreter? Give me a break. He probably didn't do that until working with the FBI.
I suspect that Singer was just smart enough to implicate a set of parents that were naive enough to discuss anything related to crimes. He plucked them for the FBI. Any parents that worked only through a lawyer probably are in a position to not be easily charged.
I suspect that such parents heard that Singer was able to get students into schools. They probably simply asked, "How much for your services?" and avoided any knowledge of what Singer did with the money.

Stanford seems to be the highest priced school in this mess. 6.5 mil from Chinese national parents. Unclear to me if this is a new student not previously named. I thought they had only rescinded an admission. The original indictment didn't include these folks, so my initial thought that Stanford hadn't matriculated any of the scammers was incorrect.

From the article, it is one of the students using the sailing program.

Stanford's statement last March said that it had identified a current student with phony sailing credentials. Then Stanford announced in early April that it had rescinded the student's admission. It looks like this new article relates to the same student.

Singer is such a scum bag. So he lied to the parents so they would give him $6.5 million - thinking it was for scholarships for needy students and he put only a "token" $500K on the books and didn't even get the Sailing Program to help their daughter into Stanford. Pocketed what looks like $6M

The fact that the $6.5 million was paid after the daughter was admitted will work in the mother's favor. This is chump change for billionaires. China has more billionaires than any other country.

The Zhao family hasn't been charged with anything....yet......I'd guess they think they will be and are trying to get their version of the story out first........

The problem for me is that now the story is being sold as $6.5 million will get you into Stanford, and because it's the highest dollar figure that's been mentioned, LSJU is getting splashed the hardest with the grime. When this doesn't change the storyline as far as Stanford is concerned at all, to me - it's still the same $500K to the sailing team that was reported weeks back.
OTOH, I think Mr. Zhao's or his daughter's status as a "developmental prospect" in an entirely non-sports way might have had something to do with the decision as well.

I mean, that this happens is hardly a secret, right? There are plenty of figures in the news whose admittance to exclusive schools is known to have involved some large donations. I don't think there's any secret that millionaires can "give" and get their kids into a separate lane. This happens pretty much everywhere.
It would be nice if this story made more schools realize that this is basically graft and it should be ended, but it seems unlikely. Really the amount of changes you'd need to make to higher education to get it even close to fair are innumerable. And it's funny, because the people I know who are doing the "best" (as in make the most money) went to places like UCLA and William & Mary. It's all kind of silly.

This spring, Stanford was affected by a nationwide admissions fraud scheme. At Stanford, the episode focused on the head sailing coach, who accepted financial contributions to the sailing program in exchange for agreeing to provide athletic recommendations for two prospective students, neither of whom ended up completing their application. The coach’s employment has been terminated. We also rescinded the admission of a separate, enrolled student who had made false statements in their application.
