Of course not. Not even close. I would, however, start him over Huff. Don't forget, Bailey breaks down easily and quickly with hard use. And I would maybe start him over Flores at DH and at PH. He would have the best on-base percentage, the second-best batting average and the third best OPS on the team. I think we could find a spot for him.

I doubt Bart would be hitting as well if he was a #2.  I think he needs to play regularly to be effective.  And I definitely would not put him in the lineup in place of Flores.  Wilmer has been a key to SF’s early success.

As I wrote at the time of his trade, it was the best thing for both the Giants and Bart to give him a fresh start somewhere else.  He never would have achieved his goals had he stayed in San Francisco.

RE: SF Giants 2025 - Giants - 05-21-2025

Today’s farm report…

Carson Whisenhunt’s stats for the month of May (to date):

Starts - 4 (2-1, 1 no decision)
IP - 28 (averaging 88 pitches/outing)
Hits allowed - 18 (13 singles, 5 XBH)
Opponent’s BA - .182
Opponent’s OPS - .511
SO - 28
BB - 2

The IP/pitches thrown per start figures are confirmation that Posey is delivering on his statement that pitchers would be allowed to stretch out at Sacramento.

Is a future starting rotation of Webb, Birdsong, Loupp, Harrison, Whisenhunt too good to be true?

The issue is not whether he would’ve put up the numbers he did at Pittsburgh. Or even the numbers he’s putting up now at Pittsburgh. He would only be playing sporadically – primarily against left-handed pitching. So obviously the numbers wouldn’t be the same. The issue is would he be a better backup to Bailey than anything the Giants have. And the answer to that is a resounding yes.

They gave Tom Murphy $8 million over two years. Right now he’s hanging out somewhere with Waldo.

RE: SF Giants 2025 - BostonCard - 05-23-2025

50 games in and the Giants are 29-21 after today's shutout of the Nationals.  Two games behind the Dodgers, but if the season were to end today, they'd be in line for a wildcard spot.

In the meantime, congratulations to the Rockies, who have clinched the distinction of the worst record through 50 games in the modern era.  Only the 1895 Louisville Colonels (7-43) did worse.

And every day, Bart’s status as a #2 overall draft selection would generate conversation regarding whether he should be considered a bust since he is not a regular.  He is far better off in Pittsburgh where he doesn’t have to drag that weight around.

And he's starting. He's played 41 games and second on the Pirates with a .365 OBP (would be second on the Giants as well).

Separately, Stanford alum Tristan Beck was recalled from AAA Sacramento, taking Justin Verlander's place. Beck has appeared in 15 games for the River Cats with a 3.24 ERA and a 2.77 FIP. 29 strikeouts, 11 walks in 25 innings.

Giants call up Tristan Beck

And Harrison's back in the rotation:

Goodbye, Late Night and Sam Huff.

I can’t say much for the replacements, Dom Smith and Andrew Knizner. However, a .220 hitter with an occasional HR would be welcome at this point.

SF is giving the 1906 “Hitless Wonders” a run for their money.

I don't expect a lot out of the recent arrivals. But Daniel Johnson went 2 for 4 with a stolen base and what I think of as a game-saving catch in his first game. And last night, new first baseman Dominic Smith (who made an amazing catch two nights ago) went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI. Jerar Encarnacion went 0-4, but didn't strike out against Cease, Morgan or Matsui (the Giants had 11 strikeouts in all, just two from the three new guys) and he had a nice catch in LF. Tyler FItzgerald on the other hand, had 3K's in three plate appearances and Chapman and Adames had two each. Adames is now below the Mendoza line at .198. Not concerned because Adames typically comes on later in the year.

Ramos having a (near) All Star season (.289/.358/.489/.848). Jung Hoo Lee, very popular with the crowds, was on base three of four times last night, not quite all-star, but doing very well (.276/.326/.439/.765).

Robbie Ray leads the majors with eight wins. Rodriguez had a wild pitch but got his seventh hold. Doval had a shaky save with two hits.

2-0 vs. the Padres since the roster shakeup.

RE: SF Giants 2025 - old spanish trail - 06-07-2025

Gyros on another run. Four straight wins capped by Chapman walk off hr. One game behind the Doge's.

RE: SF Giants 2025 - Mick - 06-09-2025

The Giants and Dodgers are the only teams in their division with a winning record against teams with winning records. Giants are 21-20 vs. those teams, Dodgers are 15-14, Padres a lowly 15-21, D'Backs are 17-24. Rockies are just laughable, and after today's game vs. the Braves, the Giants have three against the Rockies.

Through a quirk of scheduling fate, the Giants have yet to play the Dodgers. Their first three games are in Chavez Ravine starting Friday 13th.

Giants need to step up their hitting. They're 20th in OPS+, 19th in runs per game at .411. They are below league average in every category except strikeouts, walks and triples.

Fielding-wise, they only slightly below MLB-average at -6Rtot, exactly league average at .986, and 49 double plays.

Pitching's the good news. Third in all of MLB with 3.43 ERA, even better news is lowest FIP (3.23). 8th lowest WHIP (1.197), 7th in most K's (567), 11th in walks, and have given up the fewest HRs (44). Only one balk all season, 8th most saves.

Where are the Giants strong and weak? Here is a position-by-position summary of WAR to date and where they stand in relation to all 30 MLB teams:

1st Relief Pitching
2nd Third base
9th Second base
9th Center Field
11th Left Field
17th Starting Pitching
17th Right field
19th Designated hitter
25th First base
27th Catcher
29th Shortstop

Would be nice if seven things happened:

1. Adames gets untracked. This is likely, historically speaking. His career splits are that he doesn't usually get untracked until July.
2. Dominic Smith (.286/.294/.357/.651) effectively replaces Wade. SFSG, he's okay. Did well in PCL at Scranton. He's okay, not great, but better than Wade.
3. Bailey gets untracked offensively. Highly, highly unlikely. He typically breaks down over a year, 2nd half much worse than first half. Did better in May than April, but not by much. Defensively, he's killing it. Leads league in throwing out runners (30 assists), throwing out base stealers (41.2% almost twice league average of 23.5%) and Rtot (+6), zero passed balls, only three errors so far (.993).
4. Encarnacion becomes effective DH. Possible. Great hitting at Sacto (.348/.464/.696/1.160) but 0 for 11 for SFG. Just one strikeout, though. And he's just 27.
5. C. Knizner better than Huff. We'll see. Career .209 hitter, .594 OPS.  Hit .167 for Rangers last year. o for 6 so far.
6. Yaz untracks a bit more. .698 OPS+ right now, league average. His range factor in the field is way down at 1.85 (he led the league in 2020 and 2021), but his arm is still strong with 4 assists. 1 for 3 with a double and three RBIs yesterday.
7. Johnson contributes, even a little. Historically, he's not strong, .576 OPS in MLB, and he's at .438 now, though 3 for 16. Made a great running catch in CF, but historically not a strong fielder (.958).

Maybe it's time to bring Wade Meckler up. His splits are .343/.489/.457/.946 in Sacto. Subtract 100 points for the PCL/MLB divide, you still have a decent player.

Meckler has only played in ten games (45 PA’s).  I doubt that he would be considered for a promotion until he has substantially increased those numbers.

For now, I think the plan is: “it is what it is” - count on the pitching staff to carry the load with the hitters contributing just enough production to scratch out close wins.  Once the calendar gets closer to the trade deadline (July 31) and everyone has a better understanding of their playoff aspirations, I think we will see some action re: improving the club’s offensive stats.

As Posey said recently, when it comes to working with his colleagues on other teams, patience is necessary.  Acting rashly might make an immediate headline but there is strong possibility of the action having a detrimental impact in the long run.

Misplaced the decimal point. Giants are scoring 4.11 runs per game.

SF Giants attendance was 2.5 million in 2023, 2.647 million in 2024, an increase from 30,866 to 32,688 per game. This was a net increase of 1,822 fans per game, the 7th largest increase in baseball per game in 2024.

Giant attendance increase has accelerated in 2025, from last year's 33,422 (after 33 home games) to this year's 35,107, an increase of 1,685 per game.

RE: SF Giants 2025 - Mick - 06-11-2025

Giants win again tonight, 7th consecutive win, longest current streak in MLB. They are 1/2 game behind the Dodgers, a game and a half ahead of the Padres, currently in the lead wild card spot. Sixth best overall MLB record.

Giants can fight back. They have 17 wins this season after trailing by multiple runs. Only two MLB teams since 1901 have done that in the first 68 games of a season; the 2000 Rockies (finished 82-80) and the 1979 Orioles (lost the WS in seven).

Adames is getting untracked. He went 3 for 4 with an HR and a sac fly RBI, second night in a row for the latter two.

Yes, but the Rockies triple-A line-up has made a lot of teams and a lot of hitters look good this year.

How do you think they'll do against the Dodgers in Chavez this weekend? Fingers-crossed that Adames got healthy but we don't know yet.
