Fournette needs to know it has become common practice for the game's best players to purchase disability insurance. The policies bought by his parents cover him for $10 million in total disability in the event of a career-ending injury and $10 million for circumstances that would lead to him falling from his projected NFL draft spot.
These days, you cannot typically purchase one without the other even if you wanted to. And when premiums run approximately $8,000 per $1 million of coverage, there's a lot of money going around even if the covered player finishes his career with no more than a hangnail.
....
The proof is in the numbers. The NCAA began sponsoring career-ending insurance in 1990. In the 26-year existence of what is now called Exceptional Student-Athlete Disability Insurance, only a handful of athletes have ever collected.
"Total disability?" asked Juanita Sheely, the NCAA's director of travel and insurance. "More than two and less than a dozen [have been paid] that I know of."
...
What is commonly called Loss of Draft Value insurance (LOV) has sprung up in the industry as an insurance rider. It is not overseen by the NCAA. It is more an organic evolution of the insurance market to sell more policies.
Only two players have collected on one of those policies. Former Oregon cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu was the latest back in October.

4. I conclude that the Sun Bowl does not matter much to the players. There are many factors that go into this decision, some perhaps unrevealed at this time but I believe one of them is the relative importance of the game. With no player backlash that I see, I think it's obvious that the team does not see this as that big of a game.
I conclude that the players and coaches think they can and should win without CMac. If that were not true, we would be hearing about it. Maybe this is hubris that offends the woofing gods, but it sure seems that this is so.

Agree. I am in the camp of being disappointed that C-Mac is not playing in the bowl game, but is there anyone who thinks that he would be sitting out if Stanford qualified for the CFP and was scheduled to play Alabama in the semifinal?
[/quote]
No, because if Stanford beat Alabama, and he had a great game, he would probably rise 20 spots in the draft and it would mean $3 million to him.

I tried to read through all the posts and I think one consideration is missing...CM is now thinking about getting a paying job whereas the bowl game is "just for fun." Yes, the "fun game" apparently has a lot of meaning for some fans, but why should that matter to the person trying to get the best, highest paying job that he can. If I were back in school and someone told me that I had a better chance at getting millions more for my first my first job by skipping a school group project that was just for fun, I skip the project every time, especially if I know that others can ably take my place on the project team. If someone told me the project had a 1% chance of costing me millions, I would never do it.Â
Also, this debate of how important the game is seems ridiculous. Talk to people who play the games. When Stanford was nowhere, the bowl game became a larger than life experience. Now that we have a few Roses under our belt in the not to distant past, the Sun Bowl has limited attraction for the players. For those who are never going to play again, yes, they are looking forward to it and they want to win. But for others, it just doesn't matter. How do I know? I asked them and they told me so, including starters. Some, flat out, would prefer to give their bodies a break and spend time with their friends and family considering that they have been busting their asses since the summer time. Who are we to decide what should or should not matter to them? And I highly doubt that the fans are a significant part of the calculation for any player who chooses to come to Stanford. As group, Stanford fans are nowhere near as passionate as fans at other programs that have the success that we have. Coaches at Stanford have to recruit in spite of the fans. That is the reality we face.

I have really mixed emotions over this.
I'm thankful and grateful that I was able to see so much of CMac's career live and in person, including 10 games last year. He is arguably the greatest player ever to put on a Stanford football jersey. But I also believe that when you are going to leave an organization of any kind, you want to leave with as great an impression as possible. I think McCaffrey has not only done the exact opposite but he may be on the forefront of a very disturbing trend that I really don't like and that could be very damaging to college football.
Bowl games may be an exhibition of sorts, but they are part of the football season. With so many bowl games, it is part of the season for more than 50% of all D1 teams. By choosing not to play, McCaffrey has left his team before the season is over and that is not sitting well with me at all. I don't care that his teammates support his decision, at least publicly. The argument that it would be different if it had been the Rose Bowl or CFP carries no weight for me. By that logic, once Stanford had been eliminated from a shot at the division title, he should have just left then.
And what of all the other players who are also leaving and looking toward careers in the NFL? Should they all quit too? That's the trend that worries me the most.
I'm a big believer in "finish what you start." I tell that to my boys ad nauseum, I tell that to the Boy Scouts in my troop. I think McCaffrey's decision more than anything else sets a terrible example for kids.
When I think about McCaffrey's career, these are the things that will come to mind
- Catching a pass in stride and sprinting 50+ for a TD against UCLA on the first touch of his career
- Taking a pass on the opening play of the 2016 Rose Bowl and going 70+ for a TD
- Scoring a running, receiving, and passing TD in the same game against U$C in the 2015 Pac-12 CCG
- Leaving the team before the 2016 season ended
Unfortunately that last one will sit alongside the others.

I don't think the team winning has anything to do with it. It's just disrespectful to the seniors especially the ones who are likely done playing football.

It's disrespectful to ALL of his teammates, his coaches, and the fans. More than anything else, I'm disappointed in him for making a bad decision. But that's all it is - one bad decision. He's made a lot of good ones too - let's not forget that.

and at the end of the day for most bowl games the Universities loss money, one of the nominal reasons they appear to be willing to do that is the two weeks of extra practice they get that teams not in bowl games do not. I wonder if all teams could have two extra weeks of practice and not go to a bowl game how many would pass on bowl games, many of which IMHO solely exist for ESPN to fill its program slots in December.

My take may not resonate with the passionate fans on the board...but the real Stanford fans aren't many in number. I would say most are bandwagon captains. It was embarrassing to attend the Rice game and only 5,000 other fans showed up. Sending Seniors out with a mostly empty stadium would never happen in the SEC. Lame fan base-unless we are ranked in the Top 10. If Cmac wants to sit out the Sun Bowl... he doesn't owe the bandwagon fans anything. I loved watching him and will be excited to see Blove get it going like he did against ND. Go Cardinal!
