Lori Loughlin's defense apparently is going to be that she didn't know the money she was paying would be used for fraudulent purposes; she thought they were genuine charitable contributions to the institution.
SJ Merc article Must be the "I'm so dumb I can't have the mens rea to commit a crime" defense. How is she going to explain the pictures she had taken of her girls "rowing?" A fashion shoot?

About the former Stanford sailing coach:
https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/College-admissions-scandal-New-details-released-13961323.php
Quote: Prosecutors recommended a 13-month prison sentence for Stanford’s disgraced former sailing coach Friday..
Vandemoer has admitted to accepting $610,000 in bribes as part of the scheme, although prosecutors have recommended a lower sentence because the former coach did not personally pocket the funds, but rather used it for the team.
Vandemoer’s attorney also submitted a sentencing memo Friday which asked for probation, citing excerpts from more than two dozen letters of support from friends, family and colleagues in the sailing community. The former sailing coach deposited all three checks he received from Singer into two accounts, one for sailing uniforms and equipment, and another for the salary of an assistant coach, his attorney wrote.
John Vandemoer, who has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit racketeering .... is expected to be sentenced next week

No prison for the sailing coach:
https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-college-admissions-scandal-stanford-john-vandemoer-sentenced-20190612-story.html
Quote:In choosing not to incarcerate Vandemoer, U.S. District Judge Rya W. Zobel came down on the side of the disgraced coach, who had pleaded for leniency because he did not pocket the bribes personally and quickly accepted responsibility for his crimes when he was discovered. The judge sentenced Vandemoer to one-day imprisonment, but deemed that to have already been served. She ordered him to serve two years of probation, with the first six months in home confinement.

from the WSJ (article does not appear to be behind the paywall)
Quote:“Does it matter if a kid’s family can donate money when you’re an underfunded team? It probably does,” he [probably Brindley not Vandemoer as I originally wrote] said, adding he knows some schools give direct mandates for coaches to raise money from team sailors’ parents. “It’s foolish to think that’s not the world we live in.”
Mr. Vandemoer said he felt pressure to raise money for capital costs such as new boats, which run $8,000 to $10,000 apiece.
“If I could take the development piece and get recruits at the same time that I thought were going to help my team, I thought that was a no-brainer,” he said. “Now, obviously, that was too good to be true, and I was misguided in all of that.”
Mr. Vandemoer said he saw himself as bringing in donations, not taking bribes.

I dont think the below quote was from Vandemoer. Its not clear so I could be wrong, but I think its from Brindley (a non Stanford coach)

That said, thanks for posting this article. Thought provoking at a number of levels.

Thanks for the WSJ article, which I thought was more comprehensive (YMMV). Shared with my classmates.
(It appears the article is only visible to those who haven't accessed WSJ pieces more than X times in a month. I was able to read it before but not now.)

I hardly think your point invalidates it. Drug use is risky and discretionary. To be blithe about the risk is unwise.

(Sorry for succumbing to thread drift... Trying to get this back on track)
L A Times article about uncertain status of 33 USC students who were interviewed by USC regarding possible involvement in the scandal.
https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-college-admissions-usc-20190716-story.html
(I presume USC would have included anyone possible so there may be some of this group that were not involved, and probably no one was
involved that is not in this group.)
If all were involved, that would be about 8 per school year (unless some are grad students). That's a lot of extra team slots (if all admissions involved sports), but for how many sports?

The ad campaign directly says that using drugs destroys your brain. That's not true. For some people some drugs are problematic, but this is more often tied to the social situation around them, rather than anything else. Plenty of perfectly mentally well adults use recreational drugs, in fact they almost certainly dramatically outnumber abusers.
