As many undoubtably know, Alex Ovechkin just broke Wayne Gretzky's career goal scoring record, with his 895th career goal a couple days ago.  Gretzky scored his 894 goals in 1,487 games.  How many games did it take Ovechkin to break Gretzky's record?

BC

No clue but numbers are my super power. How about 1857 or 2010?

The same number - 1,487.  (As a big hockey fan, I followed the Great8’s chase).  Congrats to Ovi!

That has to be one of the amazing statistical anomalies in hockey history.

That’s crazy it’s the same. My prime sports watching was in the 80’s and Gretzky scored so much I was guessing it would take ovechkin longer.

Yup, Ovechkin tied Gretzky's record in exactly one fewer game, and beat it the very next game (ie, got the record in the exact same number of games).  As you point out, that is perhaps one of the most amazing statistical coincidences.

It is an "anomaly" but not totally accidental. https://www.cbssports.com/nhl/news/alex-ovechkin-declined-opportunity-to-pass-wayne-gretzky-on-all-time-list-with-empty-net-goal-lets-wait/ Ovechkin could have broken the record in one fewer games than Gretzky set the original but chose not to do so into an empty net.

Only 3 NBA coaches have been with their teams for more than 5 years. Name them.

Kerr for one

Both correct; Spoelstra (coaching the Heat since 2008) ad Popoovich (Spurs, since 1996!), in addition to Kerr (coaching the Warriors since 2014), who Bob mentioned.  Between them, the three have 11 championships.

With the Nuggets firing Michael Malone, that makes three teams since 2016 who have fired their coach within 2 years of that coach winning a championship.  Who were the other two?

Pasportsfan - PAsportsfan - 04-09-2025

Milwaukee Budenholzer

Toronto Nurse

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 04-09-2025

Yes, Budenholzer.  Nurse was fired in 2023, four years after his championship.  Malone was actually the fourth coach fired within two years of a championship, so still looking for two.

I think Frank Vogel with the Lakers pandemic shortened and forgettable 2020 bubble championship qualifies, right?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 04-09-2025

Yes on Vogel with the Lakers.

One more.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Leftcoast - 04-09-2025

Hopefully it's not "cheating" but I just looked over the list of Championship winners since the first Warriors win in 2016.  The missing coach has to be Cleveland/Tyrone Lue.  Apologies if relying on the 'Chip list is breaking the spirit of the contest!

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 04-09-2025

Al Attles says he coached the first :)

Hah!  I should have chosen my qualifiers more carefully.  Attles is right and I'm ancient so I remember listening to some of that season on the radio with Kieth (soon to be Jamaal) Wilkes and Rick Barry leading the way for the hometown Warriors!

Now I lived in the foothills South of Yosemite (near 41) so kids had to choose whether we wanted to be LA fans or SF fans.  I always rooted for the SF teams which was tough going when your friends were rooting for the 70s Dodger and Lakers.  That Warriors season did a lot to even the scales.

Indeed, the third is Cleveland and Tyrone Lue.

I don't know that there are any rules to this; it's just users asking each other arcane trivia and other users trying to impress each other with the knowledge thereof.  I am but a peon in this game and am constantly impressed by what others know, but I subscribe to a stats-y newsletter that occasionally has interesting stats about sports, so I sometimes have fun with it (nearly always to my amazement).

Don't know how I missed this one from a few weeks ago.  What player has the record for most consecutive opening day home runs?  What players have the most opening day home runs?
