Peter Hanson does follow this kid on Twitter but hard to see how we have room for a 3rd OLB in the next class.

What must it be like to be 17 years old and have 29 universities say, "We really like you. Come to our school and we'll pay for you to go here."

The trend does not look good for us...

How long do you think Mora can use the "you can be the class that finally beats Stanford" before the kids get wise to it?
Re: Class of 2017 -
Stanford_Cardinals - 04-13-2016
Mora is a surprisingly good recruiter considering his mediocre coaching record--to be clear, his teams haven't been terrible, but have underperformed relative to the quality of talent.
All the national "experts" on 247 are now predicting Phillips to UCLA. The hope for Stanford is that Phillips meant it when he said that academics would be a key consideration.

UCLA is a good school. It's not like he said that and is choosing between us and, I dunno, FSU or something.

First of all, someone can choose UCLA over Stanford and still be serious about academics, just like someone can be serious about football and choose Stanford over Alabama.
Second, does anyone know if Phillips is taking two AP classes his Senior year? If he is, it's not like Stanford's coaching staff will stop recruiting him. See Devery Hamilton last cycle.Â
Re: Class of 2017 -
Bosco - 04-13-2016
I bet they are using "early enrollment => early start => early NFL => early money" as their recruiting pitch.
(They signed 24 recruits on 2/4 with 4 additional early enrollees => left 1 spot for early enrollee on 2017.
Might have been used to push for commitment)
Which has been favored by quite some top recruits recently.
A lot of schools used this as a work around for early signing day in recruiting (which also has the benefit of avoiding 25 limit on NSD).
Re: Class of 2017 -
OutsiderFan - 04-13-2016
There are two ways to go.
1. Sacrifice academic preparation for football preparation - The Mora and virtually every other coach out there approach
2. Sacrifice football preparation for academic preparation - The Shaw approach
Given the track record, the Shaw approach seems to be working quite well. If someone wants to enroll early, to play early, to go pro early, he's just not a fit for Shaw's program. It really is that simple.

I think it's absolutely possible to get a great education at UCLA, BUT I don't think there's the same level of support/emphasis for academics within the football program. It's one thing to attend a top academic school, but quite different to actually have the institutional support to take advantage of those academics. A truly motivated student-athlete can get a quality education at either school, but I think one school makes that process much easier than the other.
