Sending Seniors out with a mostly empty stadium would never happen in the SEC.  Lame fan base-unless we are ranked in the Top 10. If Cmac  wants to sit out the Sun Bowl... he doesn't owe the bandwagon fans anything. I loved watching him and will be excited to see Blove get it going like he did against ND.  Go Cardinal!

This.  All the detractors on this thread just reaffirms his decision.  He gave this team his absolute all.  He owes the fans here nothing.  I have seen Ivy league football fans more loyal than some of the people on here.  And that is embarassing

And to those who say he is disrespecting the seniors,  he has done enough for them as well.  He was a major cog in getting them to a rose bowl and giving them a win.

Relevant article justifying Cmac's decision and speculating that more may follow. Could be interesting to see what happens to this lucrative-for-everybody-but-the-players bowl system if more players decide to opt out.

Good and honest article.

The other elephant in the room is the fact that outside of the CFB playoffs and (perhaps) the NY6 games, the rest of the bowls are quasi bowls--a chance for alums and fans to follow their boys and sponsors and media and athletic departments to fatten their pockets, but in the context of significance?  Nada, as they say in El Paso.

Maybe we lose a few Director Cup points if Christian and/or Solly don't play, but how important is that in the game of life?  Amongst the really good ideas above on this thread include:

--two potential superstars at the highest level improve their chances to stay healthy and/or become healthier by not playing and rather preparing for the first of their 40-50 year contributions to themselves, their families and society.
--outside of the potential two we have a team of 100+ players who will give their all to play, take their chances and strive to win.
--and why not let true freshmen play in quasi bowls (or even the big bowls) without burning a red shirt?  Why not think of the bowls as the first year of the next season, and give the freshmen (e.g. Speight, Costello, Smith (if healthy), and members of the the Frosh D, etc. a chance to show what they can do in a real life/game situation?

So Christian has done soooooo much for Chris Harrell and Luke Kaumatule(who both had Rose Bowls before Christian ever got here), they have done nothing for him and they should just smile when he tells them their last football game(likely ever) is worthless

The fact that people are actually trying to justify this is making me dislike Christian even more.

The problem I have with all this is that the message being sent is that as soon as a college football player decides that the risks of getting injured are greater than the potential rise in his draft stock if he continues to play he should quit playing and bail on his team and his teammates. Apparently some people on the board would support this as a "rational and reasoned decision".

Not good for college football, IMO, and could eventually kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

I wonder - does CM have any fiduciary responsibility? In other words, when a student receives an athletic scholarship, are they required to participate in team activities, e.g., games? If so, and if the coaches or administration balked at his decision, I am sure that CM could back out of his scholie. I'm just wondering.

Frankly, I've never been a big fan of the everybody and his dog should go to a bowl game philosophy. I think they should be reserved for the truly good teams, not just anyone who can slap together a 6-6 (or in some cases a 5-7) season. How good is truly good? Well, I'll leave that for the great minds in the NCAA to decide, but it sure ain't teams who go 6-6.

Yep.  By this logic, should he have just hung it up after the Colorado game.  If that's considered quitting, then so is this.
