A good AD should always have a list of potential replacements for EVERY head coach. Great ones will have other programs chasing after them with potentially bigger paychecks, poor ones will need to be replaced, and you never know when one is going to do something stupid and get themselves fired.

Agree with all of this. But since the softball season just ended, and other possible coaching hires were completing their own seasons, I just wonder whether this takes longer than we would prefer, but that there is still action behind the scenes. Given how damaged our program is, I would imagine Muir can't just call someone up and expect a "where do I sign?" response. Just trying to stay positive and suggest that silence doesn't necessarily mean no change is coming...

Re: Softball - indiancardinal - 05-17-2017

The good softball teams are now in their post season run... right? So I am guessing Muir is waiting for Hanson's replacement to finish their season and then make a single announcement on the transition.

This is my hope😀

Re: Softball - Durty Nelly - 05-17-2017

Doubt Muir can even interview candidates until their seasons are over unless they are local.

Re: Softball - BobK - 05-17-2017

Of course Muir could be interviewing.  But why first comes the firing then the replacement.  Certainly doesn't have to be the same day.  In fact has that ever happened with a single announcement?

You would probably know better than I, but IIRC from earlier in this thread, some were saying that very few great coaches would be interested in Stanford now given the past three seasons. If so, then I have to imagine Muir isn't going to move on Hansen unless and until he can confidently be assured he'll ultimately get a better replacement. And it's possible he couldn't really explore that until other coaches' seasons were over/until they are over. I'm not sure that means he announces everything on the same day, but it might explain why he needs to wait to do anything at all until the post-season is wrapped up.

Maybe not so nonsensical Mick.

The murder rate in NYC in 2003 (population 8.127 million) was 7.35 per 100,000.

The murder rate in Dodge City in 1876 (population 1,200) was 250 per 100,000.

Don't know why I find stuff like this fascinating, but that's what it took to get me to comment on softball without beer in the dugout.

It is certainly true that if Muir is going to hire a "name" coach, probably by throwing money at the problem, it would require that said coach has finished their season. It could also be that this is the strategy but that said strategy will not succeed. If that happens, then Muir needs to find a coach that will be credible and that will take the job. In this case, he may not be confident that there will be improvement, but he at least has done something. That can work, as I think when JH was hired he fit into the "credible but not a sure thing" class. Let's all hope for a good hire, however it happens.

Re: Softball - StanfordMatt - 05-17-2017

Important to keep in mind the distinction between revenue and non-revenue sports when thinking about coaching changes. Sure, schools will hire search firms and pay for private jets to facilitate secret interviews for football and men's basketball coaches who are still in season. In other sports, not so much. I think it's also unrealistic to expect the AD at Stanford to always have a short list of coaching candidates for all 36 sports. They may direct the sport administrator to start looking at potential candidates mid-season if the team is struggling, but I doubt a softball search would begin in earnest until Hanson was officially fired.

Re: Softball - BobK - 05-17-2017

I believe Earl and Bernard have coaches in mind.  Just like the positions for men's tennis, track & field were filled quickly.

However I'll say again if nothing by 5 pm tomorrow it's the same as it ever was.

For the record I'm a brobdingnagian Stanford softball fan who goes to games.  Just in a three year funk

To echo Bob's point, what makes this so thoroughly unacceptable to both the players and the fans is how coveted Pac-12 jobs are in the softball community. Once again, all 8 other Pac-12 teams other than Stanford made the tournament, even teams with no where near the resources that Stanford has (Oregon St. etc.). As such, a coaching staff with even basic competence just has to schedule a reasonable OOC schedule, win a decent portion of those games, and not get skunked in Pac-12 play (i.e. Cal's resume this year, which they even turned into a No.2 seed in their regional). This program has the resources, history and extremely talented (both athletically and academically) student-athletes to contend. A 2-22 Pac-12 record, with 5 healthy pitchers, the three exceptional seniors that we had this year, and the talented freshman class, falls squarely on the coaching staff.

It will be interesting to see how much appeal the job has this year. No one wanted it several years ago.  Might be different this time, but Bernard Muir is still here.

Earl will make the hire if that happens.

Re: Softball - Cred - 05-19-2017

Okay, I am satisfied that Stanford's announcement of the hiring of a new coach, should there be such an announcement, cannot realistically be expected to occur until sometime after the incoming coach's team has wrapped up postseason play.

Separately, however, I continue to wonder if the date of Softball's end-of-season banquet (don't know about this year, but last year it was held about a week and a half after the final game) might be a factor in setting the date of the announcement of the current coach's dismissal (assuming such an announcement is imminent).

Suppose an irreversible commitment to firing Hanson has been made.

Do you keep the news tightly under wraps, refraining from sharing it not only with the general public but with the coaching staff in particular, until after the banquet has been held, thereby ensuring that the event is carried off as routinely as it would be in any other year; or

Do you privately inform the coaching staff beforehand that their Stanford experience is coming to a close, thereby giving them an otherwise missed opportunity to say their goodbyes at the team's final gathering, while holding off on the firing and its accompanying announcement until a time no earlier than the day after the banquet; or

Do you pull the trigger irrespective of when the banquet is to be held? And if the trigger is pulled before the banquet, would that likely or even necessarily mean the banquet would (rather awkwardly)  go on without a coaching staff present?

What would be the upside, if any, of making the announcement before the banquet is held?

Re: Softball - BostonCard - 05-19-2017

BobK would know. If he says the deadline is Friday at 5 pm, then that's the deadline.  I hope we hear something.

BC

PS: would make sense to announce this on a Friday afternoon.

Not sure Bob's deadline ("My thought is if we don't hear news by 5pm tomorrow, we won't") was set in stone, though. It seemed to have something of an "educated guess" ring to it. And it was Wednesday when he posted that, so his deadline (Thursday, 5 pm) has passed.

Hope to hear something this afternoon, too, but I won't be stripped of hope if the day passes without delivery of the desired news.

Wasn't Dawkins fired before the banquet?  Also, if the decision to fire has been made, I think it's harmful to the coaching staff to wait to tell them since that could impact their ability to find their next job.

I see firing & hiring as two separate events. I also think that Muir could be reaching out to his #1 target (or their agent if they have one) regardless of whether they are still in postseason or not, but not announce anything until after their current team's season ends.

Don't know about the timing of the Dawkins firing; I would hope not, but perhaps someone here can confirm one way or the other.

Good point that it's not in the best interests of the coaching staff to wait, but if there are competing interests held by Stanford and the wait is only a week and a half I'm not sure it matters.
