I'm very iffy on this. I seem to recall that, when I was a student, the band (and maybe even the team) went to a different section to sing Hail Stanford Hail (alumni section, maybe?), which the student section couldn't hear very well. Then they came to the student section to rock out for a bunch of songs, sometimes with some football players joining in. This would've been '81-'85. I could be way off on this recollection, though!

Yes, I think Harbaugh started the tradition of having the team singing "Hail Stanford Hail" in front of the student section.

Just saw the rebroadcast on ESPNU and caught the players for a few seconds at the beginning and the end of "Hail, Stanford, Hail" and yes, it was very moving. Would love to know if it was a tradition that had fallen by the wayside and was revived by Harbaugh, or if he originated it. I seem to recall something after games, but I've long ago determined my memory is suspect.

Standard feature at every game I have ever seen in person(not that many since 1970.). Complete with helmets on the ground in front of them.

It's a great tradition that needs to continue! I have always liked the Fleet Street version to jazz things up when appropriate. Singing the Alma Mater at this year's freshman convocation with my son, did bring a tear to my eyes.Â
Glad to see that Harbaugh and Shaw have elevated this tradition during their tenures. I don't remember it as much with No Fault and Teevens.

In 1984, they (whoever they are) re-emphasized Hail Stanford Hail. For a while the team did sing it with the student section after games. I remember the lyrics were distributed all week during the build up to Big Game and we all practiced it. It was great to sing it in unison at Cal to remove a little of the bad taste from the last Big Game there. After my wife's sorority sisters sang her a traditional serenade at our wedding reception, I didn't have a frat song so my friends all got up and sang Hail Stanford Hail. I'm still one of the old farts who always stays to sing it after the game. When the team came over and sang in front of us on Saturday it was one of my favorite, most memorable moments as a Stanford fan.Â
Cheers,
Pete F.

Thanks for sharing, Pete F. I'm feeling better about what's left of my brain. Plus I was really moved by that gesture on Saturday, and I wasn't even there!

I remember the Band playing HSH and then moving immediately into All Right Now. Back then Hail Stanford Hail was mostly that slow prelude to All Right Now.
I remember an Alum coming to one of the rallies and leading the crowd in signing Hail Stanford Hail and talking about how it was a great song and tradition that we shouldn't let die. At the time it didn't resonate but looking back I admit that he was right.

I have a more than sneaking suspicion your memory is better than mine. At first, I didn't know what that "slow intro" to "All Right Now" was!

Fleet Street alum here. One of our former members arranged the Stanford hymn (aka hail Stanford hail), as well as come join the band, dirty golden bear, etc. it was a brilliant move, as they've been hired for alumni gigs ever since.
While the hymn isn't a particularly inspired melody, I won't lie that hearing it performed (very well) at our Fleet Street reunion show gave me goosebumps.

Brilliant, Gocard. I was hoping that someone from Fleet Street would fill us in. No, the actual melody is not catchy, and so what I think makes the piece so effective is the Fleet Street arrangement with its chords and harmonies. It rescued this piece from sounding like the 19th Century hymn that it is.
When I first heard the lyrics I found them to be maudlin, but they have grown on me in later years. I have more to relate to them now that I have spent many hours hiking in the hills and baylands, watching sunsets, etc. I remember sitting very high on the El Camino side of the new stadium a couple of years ago as the sun set over the hills to the west. Brilliant color-streaked sky above Hoover Tower and the red roofs of the campus. Suddenly I felt connected to the first verse in a way I had not before. That night I left my seat early and moved to the Red zone so after the game I could sing with the students and the band and the team.
