Re: OSU Game Thread - BostonCard - 09-26-2015

The good news is that we have an extra rest day before Arizona, and UCLA is just under three weeks from today, and Washington is four weeks from tomorrow.

Re: OSU Game Thread - ChicagoCard - 09-26-2015

Somebody commented recently that Kaumatule might redshirt. Seems Lohn, Watkins and Rotto played (according to Martinez).

According to Shaw, Fanaika played the extra OL after Bright went to LT.

One more comment, only one more game on artificial turf ;D.

Playing on grass down the home stretch should help sore knees heal up.  I liked playing on Field Turf personally, but it can be tough on the joints.

We play away games at Colorado and Wazzu. Don't both of them have artificial turf?

LOL, pretty good specialty to have if you're going to have one.

I wonder why.

I noticed them all at one time or another.

So Fanaika was 94?

Good articles.  It's going to be a long year (probably a long couple years) for OSU, but you definitely get the sense they will be scary in a couple years.  Even this year, you could see them upsetting a team with a questionable defense (I'm thinking of you, Cal) who takes them lightly.

Speculation but the thinking could be that Kaumatule has been moved between 3 positions, and if they redshirt him that'd get him one more year to settle on defensive tackle and that way they would have one more guy as a viable player in that position group next year. Then again I don't know that they've decided that at all. Watkins and Lohn should be eligible to return next year. So of those three, I imagine they'd like to have at least two return next year. I think I recall Shayne Skov commenting on Kaumatule in '13 after Kaumatule had moved to defensive tackle, that if he ever learned some fundamental aspect of the position he could be very good.

325 yards on the ground, 163 through the air.  This is a very Stanford win, love it.

CTCard is loving it.

Very pleased to see some of my predilections have been noted on this board.

However, while I loved how well the run game was working and think that under the circumstances it was the right move for this game, this is not quite the offense I would most like to see for this team.

Most importantly, it was too run oriented: about 75% run plays. I think that's too much and doesn't make us dynamic enough. I'd like to see something more like 60% run plays, maybe a little less.
[Note vs Northwestern we had 43% run plays, and a bunch of dink and dunk passes.]

Generically, I'd like to see the run plays more north/south and a little less to the edge, but maybe not now for this team. First of all, the OL may not be the strongest we've had, but they are pretty athletic and move well. They should be able to (and look like they are starting to be able to) get moving and hit someone. Secondly, McCaffrey and Sanders both seem pretty good at finding holes and making moves - something easier to do toward the edge.
Good, fast defenses can stuff those sideways runs - making them more rare in the NFL. Whether we will face any of those remains to be seen.

I did like the nature of the pass game. Play action and lots of throws downfield to places where we have mismatches leading to completions that meant something - 11.6 yds/attempt and 18/.1 yds/completion. Good - though still too many drops.

I'm with you in being all for using the run to set up play action.  But when you are ripping off 5 and 10 yard runs every time you give the ball to the receiver, why pass?  Especially when you have a gimpy QB and a second half lead.

As for the distribution of runs, we certainly went outside a fair bit (as with Sanders' second TD), but I thought we were also getting a good bit of running inside.
