They have had only two other stretches like that this season. One was playing Colorado in Denver. The other was right at the beginning of the season, mostly on the road.
Philly tonight for three home games and then three home games vs. the Dodgers, then three road games against Toronto. All three are in first place in their respective divisions.
Considering the opposition over the last 13 games, only scoring 6 four times during that stretch of games is a sad statement regarding the lack of offense. Five runs in three games v. the White Sox?? Yikes!
Agreed on the A's and Diamondbacks, they're terrible, 2nd and 4th worst at giving up runs. We should have destroyed them. On the other hand, the White Sox gives up 4.39 runs per game, essentially the league average (4.37). Not quite as bad.
BTW, as for defense, SFG team RTot is just below average at -5 Rtot for the season.
First half of the season, SFG has averaged 35,300 fans per game. I'm guessing six straight games vs. the Dodgers and Phillies will increase that total.
In the lead up to the Chi-SF series, the Sox played three 3 game series’ v. St. Louis, Toronto and Arizona. They went 3-6, giving up 52 runs (5.8/game). There is no excuse for the Giants losing two out of three, including one by a score of 1-0.
To date, the hallmark of this season is inconsistency.
SF has a lot of B talent in the daily lineup (guys who are solid big leaguers but not good enough to produce numbers on an every day basis). When B talent goes into a collective funk, even great pitching can’t bail the team out. Conversely, when there is a collective upswing, you can afford a pitching malfunction. Hence, the “we are on a roll now” followed quickly by “we just need to put things together” comments that define this season.
They desperately need a couple A guys (players you can count on to produce day after day) to carry the load while the B talent is up and down.
I thought Devers would be their first A guy since Posey retired; however, to date, he hasn’t hit his stride.
Switching from the field to the dugout, I think we going to find out how much influence a manager has on his team. Given the hand he has been dealt, what can Bob Melvin do to get his team to play more consistent baseball? The mental lapses (especially on the base paths) we have seen recently are frustrating. I put the blame for those squarely on the shoulders of the field management group.

The ostensibly A talent hasn’t helped the Yankees in their current funk.

Devers tweeked his groin on June 21, which might have been affecting him. I think he might be hitting his stride.
Here are his splits:
Last 5 days: .353 .476 .471 .947
Last 7 days: .280 .387 .400 .787
Last 14 days .250 .373 .396 .769
Last 28 days .217 .348 .370 .718
Last 365 days .263 .370 .472 .842
Also in the last five days: 4 RBIs, 3 runs scored, 4 walks, 4 strikeouts

Giants were down 3-1 after the eighth inning, I turned in. Big mistake.
Well.
That was a misteak...at 414 feet, Bailey's inside-the-park home run would have been out in 29 of 30 ballparks. Incidentally, there've only been two walkoff inside-the-park home runs by a catcher in history, including legends Bennie Tate (Senators, 8/11/26) and Pat Moran (Cubs, 8/4/1907).
Melvin gave his great relief pitchers the night off. Bivens (3.40 ERA) gave up two runs. Stanford's Tristan Beck threw a scoreless inning lowering his ERA to 4.15. Scott Alexander (5.82 ERA) gave up a hit and a walk in 2/3rds of an inning. Ryan Walker (4.33 ERA) closed it out and got the win throwing to one batter.
Phillies announcers were impressed:
Phillies Announcers Had Perfect Reactions to Giants' Inside-the-Park Walk-Off HR
2025 Cy Young poll: Webb third, Robbie Ray not in top 5 (might be sixth)
Wheeler takes lead in NL Cy Young poll, Skubal still clear favorite in AL

Well, there's a familiar name.
Also, today's game not so good. Beck will probably be sent down again.

244 players have worn the orange and black for the Giants and Dodger blue.
Players who played for Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants | Baseball-Reference.com
Can you create an All-Star team from the list? Here's a shot:
Dan Brouthers beats out George "High Pockets" Kelly at 1B. You should check out Brouthers' stats...Brouthers has a career OPS of .934, highest among all players who played exclusively in the dead ball era, virtually identical to Ty Cobb
Tony Lazzeri, 2B
Freddie Lindstrom, 3B
Dave Bancroft, SS...or John Ward
Lefty O'Doul, LF
Duke Snider, CF
Wee Willie Keeler, RF
Ernie Lombardi, C
RHP Juan Marichal or Joe McGinnity or Waite Hoyt
LHP Rube Marquard
Hoyt Wilhelm, RP
Incidentally, everyone on that list is a Hall of Famer. I'd prefer the second baseman who has the most HRs of any second baseman who ever lived, but he's not in the HoF. Probably won't be, either.

Ah-ha! That makes a bit of a difference….
Does it count if a player is traded from one team to the other but refuses to report and retires instead?
If so, Robinson is the 2B.

Why are Webb and Ray losing effectiveness in the 5th and 6th inning? Gyros on a dreaded downhill flight.

Trend not good...
Split W L RS RA W-L%
March 3 1 21 12 .750
April 16 11 121 107 .593
May 13 14 102 85 .481
June 13 14 107 117 .481
July 7 9 62 88 .438
- High point was May 7, they were 24-14 then
- 19-12 through April 30, 33-37 since then
- Run differential as still positive in May (+17), nosed over in June (-10), tanking in July (-16 so far).
- Devers' line is extraordinary, easily the worst of his career (.219/.333/.333/.667) . With Boston this year, he was .272/.401/.504/.905. This guy has been an All Star three of the last four years, and was a silver slugger and had MVP votes in the other year.
- Adames is accelerating in the second half, as per usual. Playing a pretty good shortstop, leads NL in SS errors, but also leads in assists, 5th in range factor, 5th in DPs, 5th in putouts, 3rd in games played.
- Chapman leading all third basemen in WAR at 2.9
- Biggest positive surprises: the Schmitt/Fitzpatrick combo is 8th in MLB in WAR, 0.9 and Yaz/whoever in RF is 11th in WAR.
- Expected: Relief pitching, 4th in WAR. Jung Hoo Lee, 18th in CF., team fielding back at 23rd in MLB for Rtot (-23)
- Negative WAR surprises (for me, anyway):
Starting pitching,
LF/Ramos, 15th
SS/Adames, 23rd
DH, 23rd
1B/Flores/Wade et al, 24th
and the biggest surprise and least deserved nickname, Patty Barrels is 26th among MLB catchers at -0.9 WAR. Bailey's progress, now that he's in his third year:
2023-2024 .234/.292/.348/.640, 81 OPS+
2025 .203/.64/.93/.557, 62 OPS+
8th in defensive WAR in MLB at 1.1. That's good. 3rd in errors by NL catchers, also third in DPs turned and caught stealing, 5th in caught stealing percentage.

At the deadline, the Giants traded Tyler Rogers (who is on an expiring contract and will likely be very expensive next year) for three players:
1) righty reliever Jose Butto, who had a great year last year, and is having a good year this year. Also, he's only 27. He smoked the Giants three days ago. Maybe he does well at Oracle.
2) RHP, starter, Blade Tidwell, just turned 4, 2nd rd. pick of the Mets in 2022. Did great at AA, tough time in AAA Syracuse. Losing record both at AA and AAA. Two starts for the Mets, gave up 4 HRs in 15 innings, 15 earned runs. Extremely wild, 10 walks and 10 K's in those 15 innings.
3) OF Drew Gilbert, nearly 25, 1st round pick of Houston in 2022. .233/.334/.417/.752 line in AAA. Good range in the outfield, plays mainly center, seven errors in 157 games. Not a stolen base threat. Developed nicely until last year. Made some Top 100 and Top 50 lists in 2022 and 2023.
Frankly, the Giants didn't get much.

If any one of the three guys can stick with SF next year, it would be a good return for a rental. Of course, trying to figure which guy, if any, will make a difference with the Giants is impossible at this point.
