Re: Class of 2018 - BobK - 11-30-2017

Keep in mind we often  see a first maybe 2nd test score but seldom see the final test score.

Stratford is a UCLA commit.

Re: Class of 2018 - CrazedZooChimp - 12-01-2017

FWIW, he used to have "UCLA commit" in his Twitter bio. He no longer does (although the blue and gold rose bowl sign is still the header).

Re: Class of 2018 - BostonCard - 12-01-2017

Do you think an offensive lineman would rather play in Chip Kelly's offense or the Stanford pro-style offense?

Depends what time of year he's most interested in playing there!

good for him and good for us!

Quote:"Their tradition of putting linemen in the NFL and receiving an education that is literally second to none," Stratford told 247Sports of what sealed the deal.

Kendall Williamson got bumped up to a four-star by Rivals in their most recent update.

I frequently wonder how much the star rating is based on their offer list rather than their ability. It seemed often times under Harbaugh Stanford would offer somebody, and then they would get a significant rating bump.

Not infrequently. But I’m not sure that’s a completely terrible thing. Let’s say there’s an unknown player out in Maine who suddenly gets offered by Alabama. The offer seems like relevant info to me! “Just rate all of Nick Saban’s offers four stars” does not seem like a totally inplausible strategy given Saban’s track record.

There are bad instances of this — if services give bumps because of the size of the fan base (as people believe Texas and ND recruits get), that’s silly. But every idea has bad and good versions.

Re: Class of 2018 - gocard14 - 12-08-2017

Giving stars for offers isn’t a smart way to do it either, otherwise what service does the recruiting company offer? The proper response is “whoah, Alabama and LSU and FSU offered this kid, maybe we should evaluate his tape and give him our ranking”

Right, I was being a bit simplistic. But it doesn't seem crazy to me to think more highly of a kid if (say) Nick Saban and Jim Harbaugh think he's a good recruit. Obviously there's some nuance there, but the basic concept is sound in my opinion.

Anyway, taking it back to Williamson, he has a pretty darn solid offer list too. Besides Stanford you've got Michigan State, Mississippi State, UNC, a bunch of others.

Re: Class of 2018 - Hank 91 - 12-08-2017

I agree with this completely. While we can generally be confident that four- and five-star players are legitimate prospects, what do three starts mean? Not much of anything. In those cases, I always look at the offer list. As WIM says, if we're looking at a kid with offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Clemson, I don't care if he's a three-star.

Add a preferred walk-on punter to the mix.

Harvard was probably his safety school. Wanted to make sure he could get into Stanford. :)

Wow, he has a great family story. Stanford will love to have him.

Re: Class of 2018 - FarmBoy - 12-10-2017

He's taking a preferred walk on position with Stanford. I assume Harvard was offering some sort of scholarship money, so this is a big decision by this young man.
