RE: NBA Discussion - OutsiderFan - 11-04-2022

Far be it from me to get inside Irving's head, but it seems he is trying to demonstrate how people get all worked up about anti-semitism, but don't seem to be - in his mind - as intolerant of institutionalized racism against black people. This is what makes it all so frustrating. Irving seems to be someone who has no hate in his heart, but he's still still not getting it. Stephen A Smith explained why in a brilliantly put way: we don't have the intellectual capacity to grasp how what he did is not him being hateful. He doesn't think he needs to apologize because it's on us to get to his level, and if we did, we'd understand.

This whole episode demonstrates how difficult it is to live in a world that employs technology to serve and celebrate the individual over the common good, even as other technology creates economic imperatives that make us more dependent on each other for survival. Balancing keeping that individualism vs. accepting the will of the majority you'd rather not accept, has always been difficult. Doing it in a world where each of us control our own experiences to the degree we do, is exceptionally challenging. This is why I love team sports and business. It's where we can set common goals and sacrifice individual egos for the greater good. Teams that do this win, teams that don't lose.

Anyway, I've been exposed to many perspectives and done a lot of thinking about the whole situation and wider contributing issues. The only reason I did was because I was made uncomfortable and had to think about things in ways I had not before, which I think is kind of Kyrie Irving's MO.

He caved under pressure. He’s still lying and retains scumbag status.

Oh definitely there should be some questions for Amazon.  My response was more toward Kyrie using that as an excuse when it doesn't excuse anything on his part.

RE: NBA Discussion - OutsiderFan - 11-04-2022

The apology Kyrie Irving issued was great. If only it was done a week ago.

On another note, he Warriors are 3-6, including 0-5 on the road, and they play at New Orleans tonight without Curry, Thompson, Wiggins, and Green.   Should we expect one of those 40 point blowouts?  Or will the young guys show something and win a game probably not even Steve Kerr thinks they can win?

The Warriors seem to be doing with Moody, Kuminga, and Wiseman, what the Niners were doing with Lance to some degree.  They just aren't letting them play to get the experience they need in the league because they aren't willing to take the growing pains with a championship level core.

It's a shame to see the W's be 3-6 with Kuminga getting a string of DNPCD on his stat sheet this year. Even when he has played, it's been exceptionally sporadic. So no real development of an important young player, but all the L's you were afraid you'd get playing him, hung around your neck anyway.

I wanted Klay to come off the bench last year, but they stuck with Poole and hung another banner. Given how bad the young guys are struggling together early this season, I'd again like to suggest starting Poole and bringing Klay off the bench.

RE: NBA Discussion - TrumpCard - 11-04-2022

Klay is a spot up shooter. He would need someone to run the offense in the second unit.  Poole is sort of in the Russell Westbrook role, but maybe better at it?  Klay can’t do that. What the Warriors need is for Poole to grow into his role so he can be the true leader of the second unit and help all those guys get better.

Agree.  But frankly “who starts” between Poole and Klay is way down the list.  Right now, Warriors go 6 deep.  Kerr will continue to search until he has an 8-9 man rotation he can live with.

Wiseman is a major problem.  I get he has played very little last 3-4 years, given injuries etc.  But it’s a results business.  And when he plays, he hurts them.  Badly.  His athleticism is overrated. Yes he’s long. Yes he runs the court well. But he lacks lateral movement, he’s soft. He killed them defensively. If they can do it, I’d send him to Santa Cruz. Play him 30 minutes a game for a month.

It speaks volumes that he only played 17 minutes with Curry, Green, Thompson  and Wiggins sitting.

RE: NBA Discussion - Mick - 11-05-2022

On the plus side, they were 23/25 from the free throw line, and shot 37.5% from 3 pt. range.

On the negative side, essentially all of the young Warriors play defense as if it is illegal, Kuminga in particular. He was 7/12 with 18 points and was +2. 22 turnovers, 25 personal fouls.

Wiseman looks like he hasn't stepped on a court in five years, though he had six boards in 17 minutes.

Moody is less athletically gifted, though at this stage a better player than Wiseman or Kuminga. He was +10 last night, leader of the team. Still, he had 4 turnovers (Poole led the team with 5).

Rollins was -20, Baldwin was -13, Green was -11.

Poole had 20 points, but was 5/18.

And for young men, they all looked gassed.

May well have been.  With exception of Poole not used to playing that many minutes.

RE: NBA Discussion - OutsiderFan - 11-10-2022

Let me officially point out how wrong I was about the Phoenix Suns. They might have slipped a little, but not much from last season.

Hard for me to believe Utah is a championship contender, but they do have the 2nd best record in the NBA after 13 games.

Stephen A. Smith now calling for the Lakers to trade Anthony Davis AND LeBron James. The problem is LeBron James cannot be traded this season because he signed a contract extension in the off season that gives him more than a 5% raise. I guess it's possible a new CBA could include changing the rules so James can be traded, but unless that happens, he must stay put and suffer on one of the worst teams in the NBA.

I will thoroughly enjoy the Lakers winning the lottery for Wembanyama and watching the Pelicans - who have a pick swap option with their 2023 first round draft pick - say "thank you very much!"

RE: NBA Discussion - lex24 - 11-15-2022

Wiseman reportedly headed to G League.  Needs to play.  See if there is anything there.  So far, he’s been just bad.  Can’t defend a lick right now.  That changes or he’s gone.

RE: NBA Discussion - OutsiderFan - 11-15-2022

At the risk of people assuming the unhinged notion I think I know more than Steve Kerr...

Spurs 95 Warriors 132 demonstrated why I think Jordan Poole should be starting and Klay Thompson should come off the bench.

Steve Kerr says the Warriors have a great rating with Thompson starting, but that begs the question of how they would perform with Poole starting instead.  Isn't it possible that they could perform as well or close with Poole starting and Thompson off bench?

Kerr may be right that Klay should start, but the cocksureness with which he said it after the game last night seems a little too close-minded to me.  The second unit needs better defense and Thompson provides it better than Poole does. At the same time, Poole seems to score more when he starts games. So what you lose in defense from Thompson you gain in offense from Poole, particularly getting to the foul line, which should allow the W's to get in the penalty in quarters sooner.

I wonder if Klay would be open to being a 6th man. My perception is he sees himself as a starter and his ego really isn't equipped to handle being moved to the bench. It almost seems like starting allows him to have confidence that he hasn't lost much from his injuries. Anyway, it just seems odd to foreclose on the idea of Poole starting and Thompson coming off the bench without giving it a try.

As for Wiseman, I was very pleased to learn he is going to Santa Cruz. He needs to play and play a lot.

Really mature comments from Kuminga last night too. He understands and doesn't seem to be bothered by his yo -yo playing time even though he'd like to play more.

RE: NBA Discussion - TrumpCard - 11-15-2022

Right now, GS a team that needs some tweaks, but that has no financial flexibility to make them.  A decaf version of what the Lakers face on the basketball side, but not so different on the financial side. We’ll see if the tweaks can come internally since there’s not much other option.

I clearly don't have the coaching acumen that others here profess, but my biggest takeaway from the game yesterday is that we all know Thompson is a dog person, but Jordan Poole is apparently a flamingo guy. I think that says it all.

RE: NBA Discussion - Mick - 11-15-2022

Observations on last night's game:

1) San Antonio missed 94 shots, but the Warriors got only 40 rebounds.  San Antonio got 22 offensive rebounds, W's got only 5.
2) In 25 and 23 minutes of playing time, Draymond and Wiggins both had a +13 rating. DeVincenzo had a +10 in 9 minutes of playing time.
3) W's do well when they don't give up turnovers. They had just 12 yesterday.

The biggest "news" from Kerr from last night to me was that he said he needs to play Jamychal Green more, suggesting he needs him at the Center position when he does, as playing him at the PF position isn't working.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this would for the most part mean this second unit, right?

PG Poole
SG DiVincenzo
SF Moody if not Wiggins
PF Kuminga
C J. Green

Whether Poole or Klay starts is not a big issue.  Look at minutes and who is on the floor at end of close games.

I think one reason Poole comes off bench is that he can create.  Klay cannot at this point.  So, Poole with the second team gives them more scoring options than Klay would with the same group.

Warriors defense is the issue.  Particularly easy points. Transitions and FTs.

I thought the biggest news was that James Wiseman got sent down to Santa Cruz to play in the G League for a stretch. Two yeas agor, Poole was sent down for 11 games.  Wiseman has only played 50 games in the NBA and just 64 games since his college debut. He badly needs playing time.

RE: NBA Discussion - OutsiderFan - 11-16-2022

The Sacramento Kings will end their playoff drought this year. They have too much talent to not make it IMO, and Mike Brown is a good coach.

They put 153 on Brooklyn last night!

They now sit in the #8 spot after reeling off 4 straight wins.

RE: NBA Discussion - OutsiderFan - 11-17-2022

Steve Kerr sure did rip his team after his team's 130-119 loss in Phoenix.

He's not the type to attack his players, especially given their accomplishments, but he all but said they are just going through the motions and not paying for each other, everyone with their own agenda. He even implied they are so disjointed that they aren't bothering to huddle on the court to pick each other up when someone makes a mistake.

While Kerr's observations can't really be argued, what might be the cause? Do any of you think the Draymond punch damaged the team esprit de corps so much that this lack of team unity and purpose can be traced to it? Poole and Wiggins got big contract extensions, so they should be relaxed, free to just ball out. Within this malaise, Curry goes for 50 and is playing better than he ever has.

Once again, Poole came off the bench and was terrible one night after starting and being brilliant. Thompson was only 6-17/3-9, and the W's gave up 130, so not like Thompson was great either.

It's too early to write the Warriors off, but something is not right with the team, and several players individually.
