RE: SF Giants 2025 - Mick - 08-18-2025

Here's the status of Giant midseason acquisitions. Overall, I think the Giants did very, very well:

Tyler Rogers
Rogers has 1.93 ERA for the Mets, but his WHIP has ballooned to 1.50 from 0.860.

Jose Butto is not a volume reliever. Terrific if he has a full day of rest. Can't pitch two games in a row.
SF Giants are learning the Jose Butto limitation the NY Mets already knew

Blade Tidwell is having a great season, particularly now that he is leaning on his sinker and reducing his reliance on the four-seam fastball. And his walk rate is way down.
New SF Giants pitching prospect excelling with change in pitch mix since trade

Jordan Hicks/Rafael Devers
Hicks has struggled since joining the Red Sox. 6.23 ERA, 1.7 WHIP,
Red Sox fans already fuming about one piece of Rafael Devers trade with SF Giants
Harrison has played only in Worcester, the Red Sox AAA team. He's 3-2, 3.48 ERA, but a 1.6 WHIP and walks have ballooned to 5.2 per nine innings. Not good.
Bello is doing well, he's just 20. 3.14 ERA in rookie ball.
Tibbs (drafted by Farhan) was hitting .207 at Red Sox AA team, traded to Dodgers, playing for Tulsa in their AA team, hitting .319, 13 walks, 11 strikeouts, .952 OPS.
Kyle Harrison Minor Leagues Statistics | Baseball-Reference.com
Devers OPS with Giants is second worst of his career at .751, still, he's been picking it up the last 28 days at .861 OPS.

Camilo Doval
Doval is tanking. 6.03 ERA with Yankees, no saves, six walks in seven innings. He was traded for four prospects:
- Trystan Vreiling, has a 3.38 ERA (down from 4.58 with NYY Eastern League affiliate) for Richmond. Three starts, no decisions, but a sparkling 0.938 WHIP. He's 24, was the Yanks #19 prospect.
- C Jesus Rodriguez is 23, batting .250 in Sacto (was .317 for NYY AAA team), 7 K's, 5 walks; he's thrown out 16 of 45 base stealers this year.
- 1B/3B Parks Harber is 23, batting .262 in Eugene, two doubles and an HR in six hits so far, .930 OPS. 7 K's, 7 walks.
- LHP Carlos de la Rosa, 1.53 WHIP in rookie ball, but he's only 17 and has 44 K's in 28 2/3 innings.

Mike Yastrzemski
Yaz is hitting just .190, but has four doubles and three home runs in his eight hits for the Royals, .808 OPS... .13 higher than with the Giants. six RBIs and nine runs scored in 52 plate appearances. Yaz doing well in RF with the Royals, 2 assists so far. He still leads NL outfielders with nine assists.
Giants received Yunior Marte, 21 year old RHP, has a 1.02 WHIP and 2.72 ERA in San Jose, 86 K's in 89 innings as a starter. He's 6'5", so his development is coming along.

Mets trade: Considering Rogers is a rental, the Giants did very well in that trade.  I think Tidwell could be quite an acquisition and Gilbert is a Yaz-like player with several years of SF control.

Yankees trade: Vreiling and Harber are roll the dice acquisitions.  They are both rather old for the level they  are currently playing.  Rodriguez might see some action in SF in September.  He would be a nice #2 behind the plate if he can play solid D.

Royals trade:  Given Yaz is a rental, any return can be considered a plus.  Who knows, maybe Marte might surprise everyone.

I think Posey did as well as one could expect given the assets he was dealing.

RE: SF Giants 2025 - Mick - 08-19-2025

Nice 4-3 win over the Padres. Devers, Flores and Ramos had HRs, all in the first inning, Casey Schmitt had a double. Team was 1 for 6 with RISP. Casey Schmitt had two errors. Giants now 7th in MLB in most errors, 24th in Rtot. Losing Yaz didn't help. Watching a ball come to either Ramos or Devers is an unwelcome adventure. I still don't know how the SDP HR over Ramos' glove got overturned yesterday. Kuiper was sure surprised.

Robbie Ray got the win, now 10-6. HE and Webb lead the NL in starts, Webb leads NL in innings pitched at 160 2/3 and Ray is right behind at 154 2/3. Next most wins is Roupp (7-6), then Doval, Rogers, Walker, Birdsong and Stanford's own Erik Miller all have four wins each Miller, incidentally, has the best winning percentage on the team. He's 4-1, 1.50 ERA, best of any pitcher with at least 4 IP. Pretty cool.

It was the correct call.  The ball does not have to be touched by a fan to be considered interference.  I think that is why Kuip was surprised.  In fact, if a fan reaches over the fence and blocks a players vision while the player is trying to make a play, it is considered interference.  In essence that is what happened.  The replay clearly shows the fan reaching over the fence with his arm above Ramos’ glove.  After the game, Ramos said he lost sight of the ball when guy reached for the ball.  Nice work by the replay crew….

And says they can't hit, either, and Burrell and all hitting coaches need to go.

One stat that highlights a larger issue with the SF Giants approach at the plate

Watching meatballs go by is a “leftover” hitting approach from the Zaidi era.

It is time to clean house and bring in a new coaching group that will focus on “see the ball, hit the ball” instead of standing around waiting for the “perfect pitch” to hit.

Just saw a graphic which is a testament to the Giants being unable to find good young outfielders:

Starting Outfield, All Three Age 25 or Younger: Fewest games since 1980. Here's the bottom five in MLB:

Braves, 38
Brewers, 36
Mets, 23
Yankees, 21
Giants, 2

That's right, two (2). And it just happened. Ramos is 25, Gilbert was 24, Matos is 23.

Bonds was 26 when Matthews and Maddox made their debut in 1972.

The next season, Mathews, Maddox and Gary Thomasson started on August 31, 1973 versus the Phillies. Bobby Bonds played 160 games that year (it was his 39 HR/43 SB season). Thomasson was just 21 that season.  Like Mathews and Maddox, he was a Southern California high school outfielder drafted by the Giants. Thomasson played 112 games that season, not bad for a kid. As of that game, Maddox was hitting .311, Matthews was hitting .306 and Thomasson was hitting .276. Bonds was at .304, Goodson was at .301, McCovey hit .261 but his OPS was .963. Fuentes was .275.

Philadelphia Phillies vs San Francisco Giants Box Score: August 16, 1973 | Baseball-Reference.com

Thomasson, Matthews and Maddox also started on Friday, June 29, 1973.

RE: SF Giants 2025 - Mick - 08-30-2025

20-year-old Bryce Eldridge just hit his 23rd home run in AAA. It traveled 470 feet, which would tie it for the fifth-longest home run in MLB this year.

https://x.com/i/status/1961244326756823495

Unlikely to get called up to the majors this year. Keep in mind, post-September 1 rosters are only 28 now...used to be anyone on the 40 man roster could get called up.

The Giants taking two of three from the Brewers (best record in baseball) and three of three from the Cubs (headed to the postseason) may have saved Bob Melvin's job.

SF Giants may be saving manager Bob Melvin's job with recent play

Should the Giants try to add two-time All Star Adley Rutschman? Best catcher in baseball (arguably) between 2022 and 2024? Now has a line of .227/.310/.373/.684 but is a career .256/.344/.413/.758. All Star in 2023 and 2024. 2nd in Rookie of the Year voting in 2022.

WAR has declined every year. Good fielder. Fielding has improved every year. He's 27.

Should SF Giants try to add two-time All-Star to upgrade at catcher?

No.  Bailey is tremendously defensively.  He has shown (first half of ‘24) that he can be a solid hitting catcher.  I’d give him one more year before thinking of making any big move.  Hopefully Jesus Rodriguez can be a decent defensive catcher and provide a RH option.  Bailey is a better hitter left handed.

Giants have bigger off-season issues.  Beginning with starting pitching.

Agree with Lex - Bailey’s defensive play and his handling of the pitching staff are skills that should keep him on the field as the #1.  Rodríguez is off to a good start at Sacramento.  I’m hoping he can be a solid backup to Bailey.

This off-season, the focus should be on the pitching staff from top to bottom.

Starters: Webb and Ray are the only locks.  Roupp has shown some promise.  And that’s it.
Relievers:  Following the trade deadline deals and significant injuries to Miller and Rodriguez, there are a number of openings that need to be addressed.

By the way, Eldridge is not on the 40 man roster.

Actually...let's talk about hitting. Some of you have advocated getting rid of Burrell and basically anyone who has anything to do with hitting (as have I).

Yaz's case is a stark reminder. Here's his lines this season with two different teams:

SFG: .231/.330/.335/.665
KCR: .282/.370/.654)/1.023

It is extraordinary how much better Yaz is playing for Kansas City. He's hit almost as many HRs in KC (7) in 78 ABs as he did at SF (8) in 321 ABs.

My theory is that four years ago, the Giants were state of the art. Today, they're 25th in MLB (Royals are even worse at 27th) in runs scored per game. In 2021, they finished 3rd in all of MLB in that metric. Last year, the Giants were 17th, before Jung Hoo Lee came back, before they added Adames, before they added Devers. In 2023, the Giants were 24th, and in 2022, the Giants were 11th. I(n 2021, they were 6th in all of MLB at Oracle...and that's an accomplishment. Their road average would have led all of MLB in scoring runs per game.

I think the other teams have not only caught up, but the Giants have become predictable and are (relatively speaking) easy outs. They have predictable patterns. Other teams know them very, very well.

They need a big change.

They just need to hit like they did last night….

Also, I think we would need to do a deep dive on Yaz’s stats (i.e., v. LHP, v. RHP with S.F., with KC, adjusted BA, etc.) before suggesting KC has done a better job coaching him.

20-year-old Bryce Eldridge just hit his 23rd home run in AAA. It traveled 470 feet, which would tie it for the fifth-longest home run in MLB this year.

I saw those numbers when I was looking for data that breaks down his time in SF and his time in KC.  Those figures do not detail his splits for each team.  They are simply a composite.

Also, the same applies to his adjusted stats.  I could not find any site (including Baseball Savant) that separates the numbers into two buckets - SF and KC.

RE: SF Giants 2025 - Mick - 09-01-2025

Giants won 13-2 yesterday. They've scored four or more runs in eight of their last nine games. They've scored 12 or more runs in three of their last five games -- all at Oracle Park. They've only had two other games like that all season, and only six other games with double digit runs.

Nice little power surge.

And speaking of power, a Giants AAA player hit a 508-foot home run. Not Eldridge, who hit a 440-foot home run earlier. Marco Luciano hit it, his 23rd of the season. Manager speaks very highly of him.

When I read stuff like that, I feel like Charlie Brown getting ready to kick the football.  I know Lucy is going to pull the ball away but I can’t help myself…..
