Babe Ruth had the most home runs in a three year period. The Yankees played at the Polo Grounds from 1920 to 1922, so it was a home stadium for him. His HR totals were 54, 59 and 35 in those three seasons. of the 54, 41 were at the Polo Grounds, of the 59, 32 were at the Polo Grounds. So he had 90 at the PG in a three year span. Most Mel Ott had was 54.

Lou Gehrig's was the first number to be retired.

I thought the first team to wear numbered jerseys was the Yankees as well. Turns out it was the Cleveland Indians in 1916. Scorekeepers, vendors and fans all complained they couldn't tell the players apart. The experiment lasted only a few weeks. The Cardinals tried it in 1923, but Branch Rickey scrapped it, saying it was "embarrassing to the players." The Yankees announced they were numbering uniforms on Jan. 22, 1929, and they were there to stay. Ironically, the Indians followed their announcement, and because the Yankees' first game was rained out, the Indians were the first to wear permanent uniform numbers in a live game.

Which pitcher has the worst ERA with at least 30 starts? Jose Lima, Ken Cloude, LaTroy Hawkins or Pat Caraway?

What was the first team to wear numbered jerseys? Indians, 1916 just a short experiment. Cardinals, 1923, also a short experiment. Yankees made it permanent in 1929, though Indians actually wore them first that year.

Who was the first player in MLB history to hit a home run on the first pitch of a baseball game? It's exactly who you think it is...

Who was the first MLB player to wear a batting helmet?  Who got thrown at the most?

Over 30 MLB pitchers have thrown two or more no-hitters. Two finished with less than 100 wins. Which two? A Royal and an Expo.

Correct! Secretariat/WC won the Kentucky Derby. And the Preakness. And the Belmont Stakes. All in the same year...

Secretariat set speed records at each distance (KDerby, 1 mile; Preakness, 1 1/4 mile; Belmont, 1 1/2 mile) in all three races and won the Belmont Stakes by a record 31 lengths, in a still-existing record of 2:24. Secretariat also holds the fastest 1⁄2-, 3⁄4-, 1- and 1+1⁄4-mile fractions in Belmont history.

I don't know if this is a record, but I recall reading a story that Christy Mathewson pitched a game at his peak when he purposely allowed the first two hitters to get on base via hit, then got the next three hitters out through the seventh inning...then mowed down the last six batters when Coach McGraw voiced his impatience.

So I'll say 14.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 05-05-2025

14 is the correct answer, but not by Christy Matthewson.  Milt Gaston pitched a shutout for the Washington Nationals against the Cleveland Indians in 1928.  How's this for a discordance between hits and runs:

The Nationals had 9 runs on 13 hits; the Indians had 0 runs on 14 hits.

I never knew that the Washington AL franchise was officially named the Nationals. I had only heard it called the Senators.

I went by the baseball reference box score:

Per wikipedia:

Quote:The team was officially named the "Senators" during 1901–1904, the Nationals during 1905–1955 and the Senators again during 1956–1960, but nonetheless was commonly referred to as the Senators throughout its history (and unofficially as the "Grifs" during Clark Griffith's tenure as manager during 1912–1920).[1][2] The name "Nationals" appeared on the uniforms for only two seasons, and then was replaced with the "W" logo. However, the names "Senators," "Nationals" and shorter "Nats" were used interchangeably by fans and media throughout the team's history; in 2005, the latter two names were revived for the current National League franchise that had previously played in Montreal.

In 1954 Bobby Thompson slides into third and breaks his ankle. Who replaced him?? Yes a well known name

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 05-06-2025

Special NBA postseason trivia.  Last night the Knicks came back from a 20 point deficit in the third quarter to tie the game, and then win it in overtime, while the Nuggets came back from 11 points down with under five minutes left to win in regulation.  When was the last time that two lower-seeded teams had come back from double-digit halftime deficits on the road?

Willie Mays.

And not a question, but interesting trivia: the Giants scored nine runs in the 11th inning in last night's shellacking of the Cubs. It was the most runs the Cubs have ever given up in an extra inning at Wrigley Field, and the most runs the Giants have scored in an extra inning since at least 1901.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 05-07-2025

Phogge had the answer quickly. Hank Aaron. Thompson had been traded to the Braves
