It's not over.  Big 10 and 12 will have essentially clinched berths.  ACC could still lose one if UNC beats Clemson, SEC will lose one if Florida beats Alabama.  That being said I'm much more worried about our lack of defense then our championship prospects right now. . .

OK now up 41-17 with 2  minutes to go in the first half.

Some thoughts, scrolling through this thread:

1. Ok St's loss probably sealed our fate, playoffs-wise.
2. Ohio State is not going to the playoffs over an 11-2 conference champ Stanford.  They are the 3rd-best team in their conference.
3. Derrick Henry's Voldemort candidacy is really rubbing me the wrong way.  There's an award for what he does.  It's called the Doak Walker.  What McCaffrey does is Voldemort-worthy.

Some thoughts on your thoughts

1. We still have some chances. Not sure if we'd get the nod over a UNC that beats the #1 team in the nation and has one fewer loss than us, but I think if Florida beats Alabama something like 14-3, we'd get in ahead of them both (ahead of Florida because they'd have just one good win and they've been looking tuurrible, and ahead of Alabama because they wouldn't be conf. champions). Of course, the probability of Florida beating Alabama is close to nil, and in any case, I think we'll have our hands full with SC. I'd be elated with just a trip to the Rose Bowl :)

2. Ohio state is not going to the playoffs, but they're probably the 2nd best team in the B1G. If MSU crushes Iowa in the B1G championship, this will be reflected in the rankings.

3. I haven't seen enough of Henry to know whether he's less deserving than McCaffrey, but from a pure strategic angle, it'd have been good to try to hammer to the media that sure, Henry is a better pure runningback than McCaffrey. Thus, he would deserve the Doak Walker. But the Voldemort, given to the best player in college football, should go to McCaffrey which a larger overall production and impact on the team's results.

As a parting, unrelated thought, I really wish the kick-off return yards were counted starting on the 25 yard line (a return to the 28-yard line gives you 3 APY, and a return to the 21 yard-line gives you -4 APY due to your poor judgement/skills, similar to a TFL). That would make all-purpose yards a much better reflection of how much production the player is bringing in, and way more meaningful in my eyes (probably in most people's eyes too).

Beyond this statement I am not going to comment further on CFP until after the CCG:

Stanford has played as many games vs the current CFP Top 25 as the Top 4 teams COMBINED.

A touchback isn't always an option. Look at just the last game, the ND returner took that first one to the house, but a bunch of his other kicks were fielded at the 5 and returned to the 15. McCaffrey was often fielding the ball outside the end zone and getting to the 25-30. That's a good return, other than his first the ND returner was mostly not that good.

What you say is true, but the graphic during the telecast indicated that that was his second KOR for a TD and that he also has a punt return for a TD.  I think our containment of the damage he did after that first return reflects well on our KO team's adjustments.

amartinsu13 doesn't see Ohio State passing us. I'm not so sure but I think there will be a debate and we'll have a good argument. What I would be willing to guarantee is that there's no way UNC is making the playoffs even if they beat Clemson.

Absolutely agree.  But I think Stanford needs UNC or Florida to win to make the playoff.

I just want our boys to win on Saturday and guarantee the Rose Bowl at a minimum against what will likely be a very good Iowa or a rematch against Michigan State.

Supposedly the Rose Bowl will choose the highest-ranked B1G team not in the playoff for their spot. So depending on the outcome of the B1GCG (bad blowout) OSU could sneak back in. We'll get a better idea of that when they release their rankings this week.

stupac, via Wilner, the Rose Bowl leaves itself some wiggle room...

Someone posted the full quote to reddit, and the exception he cited was Wisconsin recently, that went 3 times in a row. They said they'd want to avoid that, but that a drought like Iowa's wouldn't be a factor. Maybe they'd change their mind, they're certainly able to, but it seems more likely to me that they'd take OSU.

Since it's not going to be Michigan I am rooting for Ohio State.  We would be underdogs, no doubt, just like 1971, the first Stanford Rose Bowl I ever saw.

Re: This week in teams ranked ahead of Stanford - CornFed - 11-29-2015

I'm rooting for Iowa.  They deserve the doubts that surround their prospects, but they are a classic underdog.  Their football program has done yeoman work these last few years and progressed to the point that they have achieved something very few programs have achieved in their histories - play an undefeated regular season.

Just as it was gratifying to watch as the Golden State Warriors broke free of their ineptitude and rise to a point of unmatched excellence, it would be heart-warming to see the undying loyalty of Hawkeye fans rewarded with a nova-like explosion of success.  It may not be likely, but it would be a hell of a ride.

I would absolutely love to have Stanford and Iowa in the Rose Bowl.  It would mark some kind of fusion of the various elements of my roots.  Naturally, I would be rooting for the Indians to de-feather the stupid Hawkeyes.  I'm just sayin'.

Re: This week in teams ranked ahead of Stanford - winflop - 11-29-2015

I'm rooting for Iowa, in part because I can't stand tOSU but also because I want to see someone else represent the B1G.

Re: This week in teams ranked ahead of Stanford - fullmetal - 11-29-2015

I'm rooting for whoever will abuse our DL the least.  Oof.  Also, I'll be happy to never see another three-man rush in my life.
