To quote a friend of mine, "This is the most excited I've been for Stanford basketball since the 2008 Tournament."

Re: Sources report: Dawkins out - gdog13cavs - 03-14-2016

Russ Turner is the obvious choice, given the Stanford connection under Monty and his success at Irvine.

Other candidates that should be considered:
- Gregg Marshall (Wichita State) - he won't come, but you should make the call
- Chris Holtmann (Butler) - very good coach, not sure about his recruiting skills at a school like Stanford
- Dave Rose (BYU) - he's who I wanted Stanford to hire when they hired Dawkins
- Eran Ganot (Hawaii) - former assistant at St. Mary's, did a phenomenal job in his first season at Hawaii, but not as much experience as I would prefer
- Linc Darner (Green Bay) - led Green Bay back to the NCAA tourney for the first time in quite awhile in his first year at the school, after having won the DII national championship the year before.

I am not a big fan of hiring assistants from other schools.  Stanford isn't somewhere that you should learn how to coach.  It's one thing if you take over after having been an assistant under a departing successful head coach (aka, Shaw) with the goal of continuing that success, but quite different if you are trying to start something new.

Re: Sources report: Dawkins out - BostonCard - 03-14-2016

Good list, and welcome to the board.

If we are looking for coaches with head coaching experience, this list if top mid-major coaches is a good place to start.

Turner is on there, as are acouple of gdog's guys.

Re: Sources report: Dawkins out - teejers1 - 03-14-2016

The guy Stanford should hire is the coach at Northern Iowa.  Proven winner; would thrive at Stanford.  And who knows?  Maybe he falls in love with the place and stays a long time.

As for Stanford-ties-guys:

Turner and Amann (the other guys - Madsen, Collins, etc. - have no history of head coaching success).

I also would NOT roll the dice on Luke Walton, though he surely will wait for a higher-paying pro gig to open up.

Re: Sources report: Dawkins out - FarmBoy - 03-14-2016

Reposting this here, as it appears to be the more official hiring speculation thread:

I don't follow college basketball much any more, but one name came to mind to consider: Danny Hurley: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Hurley

He had success at Wagner that led to URI where he was steadily improving until the year. He comes from a coaching family and I've liked him whenever I saw him. I think he's probably a hot ticket for several replacements. I don't know how strong his West Coast recruiting is, but he'll be able to access a strong east coast pipeline.

As an aside, I was at a basketball camp where he and Danny showed up and put on a clinic. They showed some of their crazy dribbling drills and then challenged any two players to a game of 2X2. They went up against a couple of guys who must have had 4-6 inches on each of them and a lot of leaping ability. They killed 'em something like 15-2. Those guys know their fundamentals.

Re: Sources report: Dawkins out - ceece - 03-14-2016

What about Wayne Tinkle?
Great at Montana, and took Oregon St to the tournament this year for the first time in forever.

And he has at least one Stanford connection!

Re: Sources report: Dawkins out - tcufrog - 03-14-2016

After watching the Big East tournament [my son went to Nova], I'd like to steal a few coaches from the Big East.  Chris Mack at Xavier and Kevin Willard at Seton Hall come to mind.

Re: Sources report: Dawkins out - cardfan77 - 03-14-2016

Stanford Basketball is exciting again.

The question is, will all the players with eligibility stay or will they transfer?
